Nintendo Switch 2’s most compelling upgrades span handheld play, TV mode, new controls and online features. The standouts include a larger 1080p screen, docked 4K output, Joy-Con 2 mouse controls and a way to share supported games. Each feature has limits: game support, display compatibility, accessories or an online membership can affect what you can use.
1. A larger, sharper handheld screen
The 7.9-inch LCD gives handheld games more room, with a native resolution of 1920 × 1080. Nintendo also lists HDR10 support, so compatible games can display a wider range of brightness and color when the content supports it. These are screen capabilities, not a guarantee that every game uses HDR.

For context, HDR (high dynamic range) can show brighter highlights and more detail across light and dark areas than standard dynamic range. The effect depends on the game and display settings.
2. Smoother play in compatible games
Switch 2’s built-in screen supports variable refresh rate (VRR) up to 120 Hz. VRR lets the display adjust its refresh timing to better match a game’s changing frame rate, which can reduce visible tearing or uneven motion in supported cases.

- The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
- One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
- Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
- Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
- GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play
Refresh rate and frame rate are related but different: 120 Hz is the screen’s supported refresh rate, while frames per second (fps) describes how many images a game renders. Nintendo says compatible games can reach up to 120 fps at selected resolutions; not every title runs at that rate.
3. Up to 4K on a TV
Connect the system to its dedicated dock and a compatible television, and TV mode can output up to 3840 × 2160 (4K). At that resolution, output is capped at 60 fps. Higher frame rates, up to 120 fps, are available only at selected lower resolutions and in compatible games. HDR in TV mode likewise requires support from both the game and the display.
That gives players a choice rather than a universal performance setting: prioritize 4K detail where supported, or use a supported lower resolution when a game offers a higher frame rate.

4. Joy-Con 2 can act like a mouse
Each Joy-Con 2 controller has an optical sensor for mouse-style controls in compatible games. Nintendo says the controllers can be used on surfaces such as a table or your lap. This opens up a different way to aim, point or navigate when a game is designed for it; it does not turn every Switch 2 game into a mouse-compatible title.
Responsiveness can vary depending on the surface, so a stable, suitable surface may work better than an uneven one. Nintendo’s feature description is on its Switch 2 features page.
5. GameChat brings voice and screen sharing together
GameChat lets players voice chat and share their game screens. Groups can include up to 12 people for chat, while video chat supports up to four participants. Video requires a compatible USB-C camera, which is sold separately; the camera is not required for voice chat or screen sharing.

With GameShare, a Switch 2 player can share supported games so other players can play along without owning the game themselves. The key qualification is “supported”: availability depends on the software and the particular GameShare implementation. Check a game’s own information to confirm whether it offers the feature and what participation requires.

Switch 2 plays compatible physical and digital Nintendo Switch games, giving existing owners a way to carry at least part of their library forward. Compatibility is not universal: Nintendo notes that some games may not work or may not be fully compatible. Its compatibility information is the place to check individual titles.
Original Joy-Con controllers can also connect wirelessly to Switch 2. That is separate from the new Joy-Con 2 attachment design: the original controllers do not attach magnetically to the system.
