Steam Client WebHelper can use more CPU in some views or configurations, and there is no single confirmed cause or guaranteed fix. Try these seven steps one at a time, checking CPU usage in the same Steam view after each change. Steam’s official guidance is written for WebHelper problems such as unresponsiveness; its steps are useful troubleshooting for high CPU, not promises of a fix.

1. Exit Steam completely and reopen it

Steam’s first suggestion for a WebHelper that is not responding is to restart the client. Choose Steam > Exit in the client, wait for Steam to close, then launch it again. Check whether CPU usage settles in the same view that showed the problem.

A full client restart is a useful first check because it also shows whether the symptom returns immediately or only after opening a particular page or window.

2. Test Steam’s GPU-accelerated web rendering setting

In Steam, open Steam > Settings > Interface and turn off Enable GPU accelerated rendering in web views (wording may vary by client version). Restart Steam when prompted, then compare CPU use in the same view as before.

  • Ready for Upgrades – Designed with tool-less access, easily swap out components, ensuring future-proof performance for years to come.

Steam Support notes in “Steamwebhelper is not responding” that “Some video drivers can have trouble rendering Steam content if GPU acceleration is turned on.” Treat the toggle as a diagnostic test: disabling acceleration can make Steam’s interface less responsive, so leave it off only if the trade-off is acceptable.

3. Update the graphics driver if the test helps

If CPU use or WebHelper behavior improves with acceleration disabled, Steam recommends considering a graphics driver update. Get the driver from the official source for your GPU and operating system, and follow that source’s installation instructions. The result is not guaranteed; after updating, you can re-enable acceleration and compare again.

4. Check for third-party software interference

Steam says some security software can interfere with WebHelper’s security sandboxing and lead to hangs or crashes. That guidance concerns those symptoms specifically; it does not establish security software as the cause of every high-CPU report.

If the problem coincides with a particular security or system utility, close it briefly as a controlled diagnostic and check Steam again. If you temporarily disable protection, restore it immediately after the test. Do not leave security software disabled or add broad exclusions just to see whether CPU use changes.

5. Restart Steam’s rendering components

Steam Support lists restarting only the rendering components as a troubleshooting option. If Steam offers that option in its current prompt or interface, use the client’s own control and follow the on-screen instructions. Avoid ending WebHelper processes indiscriminately in Task Manager or a system monitor; Steam may restart them, and force-closing processes does not identify the cause.

6. Clear Steam’s browser data

Steam Community users have suggested clearing cached web resources with Steam’s Delete Web Browser Data control. This is an anecdotal troubleshooting step, not an official guarantee that CPU usage will fall. Find the control in Steam’s settings, clear the data, and reopen the page that was affected. You may need to sign in to some Steam pages again.

7. Reduce Library and page activity, then compare

Community suggestions include switching to a low-performance Library mode, reducing community content, closing extra Steam windows, and avoiding pages with animated effects. These are optional, anecdotal changes; they can reduce visual effects or access to some content. Try one change at a time so you can tell whether it affects CPU use.

Compare the same Steam view with the client in the foreground and in the background, and compare the Library with another view. A ValveSoftware/steam-for-linux issue report describes high CPU on a particular Linux setup in connection with the selected Library view and foreground state. That report makes the page and client state worth observing, but it does not establish a general cause.

Linux: check graphics support if Steam also has startup trouble

Steam’s Steam for Linux support guidance recommends checking video drivers. Its stated support scope is the most recent Ubuntu LTS using Unity, Gnome, or KDE; it is not a statement that every Linux distribution has the same support status.

For Linux startup problems, Steam suggests confirming that 32-bit OpenGL works. On Ubuntu, its examples include installing mesa-utils:i386 and running glxinfo. This is driver and startup troubleshooting, not a universal remedy for WebHelper CPU use. A separate ValveSoftware/steam-for-linux issue describes WebHelper crashing and restarting on one setup, where users reported that disabling GPU acceleration helped them. Treat that as a case-specific report; if crashes persist, gather your system details and contact Steam Support or report the issue through Valve’s channels.

How to compare the changes

  1. Choose a repeatable view. Use the Library or page where you first noticed high CPU, and note whether Steam is in the foreground or background.
  2. Record a baseline. Observe CPU use in that view before changing a setting. No particular percentage is a universal threshold for a fault.
  3. Change one thing. Restart or adjust one setting, then return to the same view and observe again.
  4. Check the trade-off. Note whether the interface becomes less responsive or loses visual effects, as well as any CPU change.
  5. Keep or undo the change. If there is no clear improvement, restore the original setting before trying another step.

If the symptom persists, note which Steam view triggers it, whether Steam is foregrounded, your operating system and graphics driver, and what changed after each test. That context is more useful for support than assuming WebHelper has one root cause.
