You can play Steam games on an Android phone or iPhone without a PC beside you by using a cloud service such as NVIDIA GeForce NOW—but only for games that service supports. Steam Link is a different option: it streams a game from a computer running Steam, so that computer must be available during play.

How to stream Steam games with Steam Link
Steam Link does not install or run a PC version of a Steam game directly on your phone. It connects the phone to a computer running Steam: the computer executes the game, while the phone receives the stream and sends your controls back. [Valve]
- Install Steam Link. Get the app from your device’s app store. Valve lists support for iPhone and iPad, as well as Android, with minimum operating-system versions on its Remote Play page.
- Prepare the host computer. Sign in to Steam on the computer you will use and leave Steam running.
- Pair your phone. Open Steam Link and follow its prompts to find and connect to the host computer. Valve documents the pairing flow for Android and Apple devices.
- Choose a game and start streaming. Select a title from your Steam library. The game continues to run on the computer; Steam Link streams its picture and sound to your phone.
- Choose your controls. Try the touchscreen controls or connect a compatible controller if the game is difficult to play by touch. Check compatibility with both your phone and the game before buying a controller. [Android support; Apple support]
Valve describes Remote Play as delivering real-time video encoding over a custom, low-latency network protocol. That does not change the key requirement: the host computer must be available to run the game. [Valve]
How to play without a local PC using GeForce NOW
GeForce NOW is the cloud option to consider when you do not have a computer running Steam. NVIDIA says you can use its app or browser, connect game-store accounts, and access games you own that are supported by the service. [NVIDIA]

Check that your exact game is available
Before buying a game for cloud play, search the current GeForce NOW catalog for its exact title and confirm it is available in your region. Developers must opt games into Steam Cloud Play, and Steam ownership by itself does not guarantee access through GeForce NOW. [Steamworks]
Understand Ready-to-Play and Install-to-Play
NVIDIA distinguishes Ready-to-Play games from Install-to-Play games. Install-to-Play availability requires publisher participation; some features in that category require a premium membership, and persistent storage is an optional add-on. Connect your Steam account—or search manually

Use NVIDIA’s current instructions to check whether its app or browser works on your device, whether your chosen title requires a particular membership, and whether the service is available in your region. Do you need a controller?
No. Steam Link offers touchscreen controls, and a controller is optional. A compatible controller can make some games easier to play on a phone, but support depends on the device and the game. Check both before purchasing an accessory. [Android support; Apple support]
