The picks below cover raw attack, elemental matchups, and status effects, using weapon profiles and attribute labels in the community database’s October 1, 2026 game-data snapshot. Treat them as a role-based shortlist—not a tested damage ranking: the right choice depends on the monster’s weakness, your skills, your timing, and the game version you are playing.
How to choose a Great Sword
Great Sword is a deliberate weapon built around positioning and charged attacks. Its listed attack value is only part of the decision: affinity, element or status, weapon skills, slots, and whether you can land a charged hit all matter. A weapon labeled the leader for an element or status is not automatically the highest-damage choice in every hunt.
- Attack and affinity: High displayed attack can come with negative affinity. Consider the whole build rather than comparing attack alone.
- Element or status: Match the weapon to the target’s weakness or to a control plan; do not assume element always beats raw damage for Great Sword.
- Skills and slots: A skill or slot is useful insofar as it supports your build. The listed values are not damage results by themselves.
- Reliable openings: A shorter charge that connects can be more valuable than a longer charge that misses.
The Incusor Great Sword database lists 90 weapons with displayed attack, affinity, slots, and skills, drawing on the MHDB Wilds API snapshot. Its labels and profiles are community game data, not an official Capcom ranking or independent damage test.
Eight Great Swords to consider
1. Grimslayer Urgeom — raw-attack anchor
Grimslayer Urgeom is listed at 1200 displayed attack, with -20% affinity and Focus +2. Its attack makes it a raw-focused option, but the negative affinity is a real trade-off to account for in the full build. Do not treat its attack figure as proof that it wins every matchup.
#1 Best Overall
- Wild New Adventure – Monster Hunter Wilds follows the story of a special Research Commission investigating the Forbidden Lands. Fully voiced for the first time in the series, the hunter is joined in their journey by a colorful cast of characters, including a Palico partner, Guild-appointed Handler Alma, trusty smithy Gemma, and the mysterious child Nata. Together, the team ventures into an unexplored new frontier where surprises await around every corner.
- A Living World – The Forbidden Lands spans multiple biomes with dynamic identities, such as the Windward Plains and Scarlet Forest, where the ecosystems shift between vibrant seasons brimming with life, and unforgiving climates where monsters fight over limited resources. Changes in the landscape will impact the creatures that live there and push hunters to adapt as well.
- New Monsters and Wildlife – Monster Hunter Wilds features a variety of new creatures, ranging from herds of small species to large monsters – some of which roam the Forbidden Lands in packs. Every creature hunters encounter in the wild has carved out a special place in its habitat and possesses unique attacks and behaviors.
- Players can also now ride atop the Seikret, an agile new mount enabling hunters to traverse difficult terrain, perform actions like sharpening weapons on the move, and switch between two weapons while out on hunts!
- Evolved Hunting Action – The series’ acclaimed action-packed gameplay is back and more exciting than ever! Hunters can look forward to tracking down monsters with an array of new moves, special abilities, equipment, and more. The action also now flows seamlessly from cutscenes to gameplay, resulting in a new level of immersion.
2. Freezer Speartuna — ice
The database labels Freezer Speartuna its ice attribute leader. Consider it when ice is appropriate for the target, while weighing its complete profile and your build rather than assuming the label guarantees the best hunt damage.
3. Rooster Decapitator — fire
Rooster Decapitator is listed as the fire attribute leader and its entry shows Charge Master +2 and Focus +2. Those skills may suit a charge-centered setup; whether they improve your hunt depends on how your build and openings use them.
4. True Shadowbringer — dragon
True Shadowbringer is the database’s dragon attribute leader. It is a matchup option when dragon is relevant, not a universal replacement for a raw-focused sword.
5. High Lagia Blade — thunder
High Lagia Blade is listed as the thunder attribute leader. Choose it when thunder fits the target and your intended setup.

6. Poison King — poison
Poison King is listed as the poison attribute leader. Its role is status application rather than a claim of top damage in every hunt; whether poison suits your plan depends on the encounter.
7. Destructive Torpor — paralysis
Destructive Torpor is the paralysis attribute leader in the database. Consider it when you want paralysis as part of your hunt strategy, rather than selecting it solely from a ranking label.
Rank #4
8. Akanesasu — water
Akanesasu is listed as the water attribute leader and its profile shows positive affinity and skill support. It is a water-matchup option whose affinity and skills should be evaluated together with the rest of your build.
Status alternative: Immolator Blade
The database also identifies Immolator Blade as the sleep leader. It is a reasonable alternative if sleep matters more to your planned hunt than the water coverage provided by Akanesasu. The shortlist includes Akanesasu to cover water; neither label establishes a universal damage winner.

Make the weapon work with Great Sword’s timing
The Wilds Field Guide’s Great Sword advice emphasizes positioning and choosing charges that are likely to connect. Use the monster’s movement to decide how much commitment an opening allows:
- Watch the monster and move toward the likely opening. Positioning before committing is more reliable than beginning a long charge just because the monster is nearby.
- Choose the shortest charge likely to land. Save the longest charged route for a confirmed opening that gives you time to complete it.
- Use Focus Mode to aim at wounds before charging. The guide recommends targeting wounds as part of the approach.
- Build around what changes real openings. The guide prioritizes raw damage and affinity affecting charged hits, then charge-time support when it changes which openings you can use, sharpness comfort, and survivability while learning tackle timing.
This is practical guidance from an independent guide, not an official Capcom ranking or a claim that these weapons were tested against one another.
How current are these picks?
The weapon profiles reflect the community database’s October 1, 2026 game-data snapshot. Official Monster Hunter Wilds news accessed October 7, 2026 says the Ascendance expansion is scheduled for 2027. Official posts from September 2026 describe a Boost Bracer that temporarily enhances actions and enables new attacks, including Boost Drivers. Those are announced expansion mechanics, not features to assume are available in the current base game. The shortlist may need revisiting after the expansion or further balance updates.
