The best Souls-like co-op game depends on whether your group wants a shared campaign, a three-player team, or a game built around cooperative play. Lords of the Fallen is the clearest pick for documented shared progression and crossplay; Remnant II is a strong fit for three players who enjoy ranged combat. Elden Ring offers online multiplayer in a vast open world, while Elden Ring Nightreign is designed around cooperative survival action rather than a conventional shared campaign.
How to choose a Souls-like for co-op
“Co-op” can mean anything from online multiplayer within a mostly solo game to a campaign designed for friends to progress together. Before choosing, decide what matters most to your group:

- Shared progress: Do you want both players to advance through the same campaign, or is joining for online sessions enough?
- Party size: Some options support a three-player group; others may have different limits depending on mode.
- Combat style: Most picks emphasize melee combat, but Remnant II also makes firearms and ranged play central.
- Crossplay and platform: Crossplay is not universal, and online features can depend on platform and region.
- Game structure: A co-op survival-action loop is not the same experience as exploring a large campaign together.
The recommendations below are ordered by how clearly their available official materials explain the co-op experience, not by an objective score.
Best Souls-like co-op games
1. Lords of the Fallen (2023): best for documented shared progression
Lords of the Fallen is the strongest choice here if your priority is playing through a campaign together. CI Games and HEXWORKS added a named Full Shared-Progression Co-op mode in April 2025, alongside a free Friend’s Pass with Version 2.0. The official update information and co-op FAQ describe how the mode works.

Shared progression has eligibility conditions: both players must be on the same New Game level and must be within one main boss of each other in progress. The FAQ says quest items, key items, boss rewards, and chest items are obtained by both players when one picks them up; other items require each player to collect them individually. This is a structured shared-progression system, not a guarantee that every item or save detail is identical between players.
The FAQ also says crossplay works through password matchmaking in most multiplayer modes. A Friend’s Pass lets someone who does not own the full game join an owner for the adventure in either shared or non-shared progression mode. Saving can depend on the session type, so check the FAQ’s details before settling on how your group will play.
2. Remnant II: best for a three-player team and ranged combat
Remnant II supports co-op with two other friends, for a team of three. Its combat blends melee with firearms and other ranged attacks, making it a good fit if your group wants Souls-like boss fights without limiting itself to close-quarters weapons. The Steam product page describes its action-RPG combat and lists online co-op.

- Over 40 handcrafted stages filled with hidden collectibles, bonus challenges, and quirky obstacles to overcome… or fall victim to. Leader swapping gameplay - change who leads the adventure to unlock entirely new actions and strategies.
- Experiment and discover - there’s no single right way to play. Combine abilities, techniques, and movement to suit your own style. Unique character abilities - Marbles and Checkers each bring something different to the table, and mastering both is key to conquering specialized challenges.
- Couch co-op support - jump in solo or grab a friend and tackle the wilds together in local co-op play.
- Whether you’re riding the wind solo or sharing the breeze with a friend, Windswept invites players to slow down, explore, and enjoy the journey as much as the destination. How far will you go? Where will your journey end? Let's get swept away - together!
- English, French, German, Japanese, Portuguese (Brazil), Spanish (LATAM), Spanish (Spain), and Traditional Chinese in-game text.
It is the most shooter-leaning recommendation in this list. That makes it a natural option for groups who want to tackle the game together repeatedly and enjoy mixing weapon ranges, rather than looking specifically for the feel of a traditional melee-focused Souls campaign.
3. Elden Ring: best for online play in a huge open world
Elden Ring is an open-world action RPG with online multiplayer for up to three players, according to Bandai Namco’s official product page. Its scale and world exploration make it an appealing choice for friends who want to play online in the Lands Between.
That player-capacity information does not establish that the campaign is seamlessly shared or that progress persists identically for every player. If uninterrupted shared campaign advancement is your deciding factor, choose a game whose official materials explicitly document that feature, such as Lords of the Fallen.

4. Elden Ring Nightreign: best for co-op-first survival action
Elden Ring Nightreign is a co-op-focused spin-off built around cooperative survival action, rather than a conventional shared Souls campaign. FromSoftware’s official FAQ describes three-player cooperative play as its core design and says two-player and solo play are also supported. It describes online play as cooperative only.
The same FAQ notes that PlayStation Plus or Xbox Game Pass is needed for the primary three-person co-op and asynchronous online elements in the region covered by that Japanese FAQ. That is a Japan-specific statement, not a worldwide rule; check the requirements for your platform and region before buying.

Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty appears in Souls-like co-op recommendation roundups, including TheGamer’s list. 6. Nioh 2: check which co-op format fits your group
Nioh 2 is another Souls-like named in TheGamer’s co-op roundup. The specific mission and progression rules, player limits, and cross-platform behavior are not established by the official material cited for this list. Confirm the current mode details for your edition and platform if those mechanics are important.
7. Dark Souls III: verify current session details before you commit
Dark Souls III is included in TheGamer’s roundup, but the available sources do not document current platform availability or its co-op session rules. Do not infer its service status from Dark Souls II: FromSoftware’s service notice applies to that game only.
8. Hellpoint: a possible pick, but confirm the co-op mode
Hellpoint is also surfaced as a possible co-op Souls-like by TheGamer. The current platform-specific distinction between local and online co-op is not established by the available official materials. Check the edition and mode details for your platform before purchasing it for online play.

Which Souls-like has the best co-op?
For a group that wants documented shared campaign progress, Lords of the Fallen is the clearest recommendation because its official materials explain both the shared-progression mode and its requirements. Choose Remnant II if your priority is a three-player squad and a blend of ranged and melee combat. Pick Elden Ring for online multiplayer in an open world, or Nightreign if your group wants a cooperative survival-action game rather than a standard shared campaign.
Dark Souls II service note
Dark Souls II should not be confused with the Dark Souls III recommendation above. FromSoftware says online services for Dark Souls II ended on PS3 and Xbox 360 on March 31, 2024, while services continue on PS4, Xbox One, and Windows versions, as stated in its official service notice. This is a platform-specific service update for Dark Souls II, not evidence about another game in the series.
