Yes: the game behind the headline is Astro Bot, a family-friendly PlayStation 5 platformer that won Game of the Year at The Game Awards 2024. It also won that event’s Best Family Game award. But “family-friendly” is not the same as content-free or right for every child: the ESRB rates it E10+ for crude humor and fantasy violence.
Which game won Game of the Year?
Astro Bot, developed by Team Asobi, won The Game Awards’ 2024 Game of the Year award. Sony’s corporate transcript reports four wins for the game at the event, including Best Family Game. “Game of the Year” here refers specifically to The Game Awards prize, not a single award shared by the entire games industry. Sony’s earnings transcript records the wins.

Team Asobi describes Astro Bot as a PS5-exclusive game released on September 6, 2024. It is a platforming adventure in which Astro travels through themed worlds, rescues robots, collects items, solves puzzles, and battles cartoon enemies. Team Asobi’s game page lists the release date and platform; PlayStation’s announcement frames it as a celebration of the console’s history.
Is Astro Bot appropriate for kids?
The ESRB rates Astro Bot E10+ (Everyone 10+) for Crude Humor and Fantasy Violence. Its rating summary describes cartoon combat, including punches and spin attacks against robots, as well as cartoony weapons. Parents should read the full ESRB rating summary and decide whether those elements suit their child; a family-game award does not guarantee that every child will be comfortable with or ready for the game.

The ESRB parent guide explains how to use ratings and content descriptors when choosing games. The rating is a useful starting point, not a prediction of whether a particular child will enjoy a platforming adventure or find it manageable.
What families need to play it
Astro Bot is made for PlayStation 5, so PS5 hardware is required. It is not a game for other consoles or PC. If your household already has a PS5, the game is the relevant purchase; a console is only an additional consideration for families who do not own the required hardware.

Team Asobi Studio Director Nicolas Doucet introduced it in PlayStation’s reveal: “On behalf of Team Asobi, I have the immense pleasure to unveil our new game Astro Bot coming to PlayStation 5.” The announcement identifies the game and its platform.

PlayStation Blog reported more than 1.6 million votes globally across 19 categories in its own 2024 community-voted awards poll. That figure belongs to PlayStation Blog’s poll; it is not The Game Awards vote tally, a vote total for Astro Bot, or a sales figure. PlayStation Blog’s results post describes that separate poll.
