Outdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down
One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchPC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 118255indi.dll is a legacy Intel network-driver installer component, not a normal Windows system DLL. If 8255indi.dll is missing, was not found, or could not be loaded, Windows is usually trying to start an old Intel PRO/100 or 8255x network adapter installer.
The safest solution is not to download the DLL separately. Identify the program calling it, then reinstall the complete matching Intel or computer-manufacturer driver package. If the old network hardware is no longer used, remove the software that is still requesting the file.
What 8255indi.dll belongs to
The file is described as “8255x-based Network Device Installer.” It belongs to the Intel 8255x-based Network Device Installer Helper and is associated with Intel PRO/100 Ethernet adapter software.
Intel’s 8255x family was used in older 10/100 Ethernet controllers and PRO/100 adapters. Archived driver packages place 8255indi.dll in legacy adapter-driver media, including Windows 9x/ME and older IA32 driver directories.

That explains why the error can appear on a modern Windows 10 or Windows 11 computer after:
- Restoring an old disk image
- Connecting an old hard drive
- Running an obsolete adapter installer
- Removing an old network card
- Installing an OEM driver package from old recovery media
- Leaving a startup or uninstall entry behind
8255indi.dll is not normally part of Windows, DirectX, .NET, Visual C++ Redistributable, or the current Windows driver store. It should not normally be copied into C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64.
Before fixing it, identify what is calling the file
The filename alone cannot identify the exact cause. First record when the error appears and which program is named in the message.
Common wording includes:
- “This application failed to start because 8255indi.dll was not found.”
- “The file 8255indi.dll is missing or corrupted.”
- “Error loading 8255indi.dll.”
- “The specified module could not be found.”
- “8255indi.dll is not designed to run on Windows.”
Check the error dialog
Note whether the dialog appears:
- At startup
- When opening a particular program
- During driver installation
- After logging in
- When uninstalling old software
If the dialog names an Intel installer, adapter utility, or OEM setup program, reinstall that package rather than repairing Windows.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteCheck startup entries
- Press
Ctrl+Shift+Esc. - Select Startup apps.
- Look for Intel PROSet, PRO/100, network adapter utilities, or an entry with a blank or unknown publisher.
- Right-click a suspicious entry and choose Disable.
- Restart Windows.
If the error disappears, the missing file was being requested by a stale startup item. Disabling it prevents the message, but uninstalling the obsolete software is the better permanent fix.
Check Event Viewer
- Press
Win+X. - Select Event Viewer.
- Expand Windows Logs and select Application.
- Look for an error recorded at the same time as the DLL message.
- Open the event and note the application name and path.
If Event Viewer identifies a setup executable or Intel utility, use that information to locate the original driver package.
Fix 1: Reinstall the complete matching Intel or OEM package
Time needed: 15–30 minutes
This is the most likely fix when the error appears during installation or after restoring an older system.
Do not extract 8255indi.dll by itself. The installer may require additional files, configuration data, device information, and a specific directory structure.
Find the correct source
Use one of these sources, in this order:
- The original computer manufacturer’s support media
- The original adapter manufacturer’s driver media
- A recovery image or known-good backup from that computer
- An official archived support package matching the exact computer or adapter model
Look for package names referring to Intel PRO/100, 8255x, Network Connection, PROSet, or Network Device Installer. Historical archives use names such as Intel PRO/100 LAN Adapter Driver & Utility, but an old package name does not prove that the package supports Windows 10 or Windows 11.
Do not install an old PRO/100 package merely because the name contains “Intel.” A driver package for unrelated hardware can create additional network or device problems.

Reinstall the package
- Disconnect from the internet if the installer is from old media and you do not need online access during setup.
- Copy the complete driver folder to the local disk.
- Right-click the installer and select Properties.
- If an Unblock checkbox appears on the General tab, select it and click Apply.
- Right-click the installer and choose Run as administrator.
- Follow the setup wizard.
- Restart Windows when prompted.
- Open Device Manager by pressing
Win+Xand selecting Device Manager. - Expand Network adapters.
- Confirm that the intended adapter appears without a yellow warning icon.
The fix worked if the installer completes without the DLL error and the adapter appears correctly in Device Manager.
If setup still fails, check whether the package is intended for Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows NT, or another unsupported platform. Compatibility mode may help an old 32-bit setup program, but it cannot make a 16-bit component run on 64-bit Windows.

When manually hunting through several old driver packages, version matching can be difficult and repeated installs can leave more stale entries behind. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and show what needs attention, while the driver installation feature requires the full version. For this file specifically, however, reinstalling the exact Intel or OEM package remains the definitive fix.
Fix 2: Remove obsolete Intel network software
Time needed: 5–15 minutes
Use this fix when the old adapter has been removed or the computer no longer uses the Intel PRO/100 software.
Uninstall from Windows Settings
- Press
Win+I. - Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Search for Intel PROSet, Intel Network Connections, PRO/100, or a similarly named network utility.
- Select the three-dot menu beside the entry.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Follow the removal wizard.
- Restart Windows.
On Windows 10, use Settings → Apps → Apps & features.
Uninstall from Control Panel
Some older packages do not appear in modern Settings.
- Press
Win+R. - Type
appwiz.cpl. - Press Enter.
- Look for Intel PROSet, Intel network software, or an OEM network utility.
- Select it and choose Uninstall.
- Restart the computer.
Remove an unused device
If the old adapter is still listed:
- Press
Win+X. - Select Device Manager.
- Expand Network adapters.
- Right-click the obsolete Intel adapter.
- Select Uninstall device.
- If offered, select Attempt to remove the driver for this device.
- Select Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
Do not remove a network adapter that provides your current connection. If you are unsure, check the adapter name under Settings → Network & internet → Advanced network settings before uninstalling anything.
If removing the software stops the message, the DLL was not needed by Windows. A stale Intel startup item or uninstall routine was simply requesting it.
Fix 3: Check whether Windows blocked or quarantined the file
Time needed: 5–10 minutes
An antivirus product can quarantine a file from old driver media. That does not prove the file is malicious, and its absence does not prove it was safe.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review detections recorded around the time the error began.
- Open any detection associated with the Intel installer or driver folder.
Restore a quarantined file only when all of the following are true:
- It came from the original computer or adapter media.
- The package matches the hardware.
- The complete package has been scanned.
- You have confirmed that the detection is not associated with a modified or downloaded installer.
Microsoft warns that restoring a detected file can expose the device if the file is genuinely harmful. If the file came from an unknown source, leave it quarantined and obtain a clean, original driver package instead.

After restoring a verified file, reinstall the complete package rather than copying the DLL into a Windows directory.
Fix 4: Resolve the 16-bit and 64-bit compatibility problem
Time needed: 10 minutes for diagnosis; longer if replacing the environment
Some catalogue information labels an archived 8255indi.dll build as Win16. That classification is not confirmed for every build, so verify the original binary or package before treating it as definitive.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The broader compatibility issue is clear: Microsoft states that 64-bit Windows does not support 16-bit programs or 16-bit components. WOW64 supports 32-bit applications, not 16-bit components.
This can produce a loader message such as “not designed to run on Windows” when an ancient Intel setup program is launched on Windows 10 or Windows 11 x64.
Check your Windows architecture
- Press
Win+I. - Select System.
- Select About.
- Check System type.
If it says 64-bit operating system, a genuinely 16-bit installer component cannot run directly.
What to do instead
Use one of these approaches:
- Find a later driver package designed for the installed version of Windows.
- Install the driver on a supported older 32-bit Windows system.
- Run the legacy environment in an appropriate virtual machine.
- Replace the obsolete adapter with hardware supported by the current operating system.
- Remove the old installer if the hardware is no longer needed.
Compatibility mode is worth trying only for a 32-bit setup program:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Right-click the installer.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Compatibility tab.
- Select Run this program in compatibility mode for.
- Choose an appropriate older Windows version.
- Select Run this program as an administrator.
- Select Apply, then OK.
Compatibility mode does not add 16-bit support to 64-bit Windows. Do not repeatedly retry the same installer if the error identifies a 16-bit component.
Fix 5: Repair Windows components if other DLL errors also exist
Time needed: 15–30 minutes
This is a lower-probability fix because 8255indi.dll is not a Windows component. Use it when the computer also shows widespread system-file errors, broken Windows features, or unrelated DLL failures.
Run DISM first
- Open Start.
- Type
cmd. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Enter:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for the operation to finish.
- Restart Windows if requested.
Run System File Checker
Open an elevated Command Prompt again and enter:
sfc /scannow
Wait until verification reaches 100 percent, then restart.

DISM repairs the Windows component store that SFC uses. SFC can repair protected Windows files, but it will not recreate a third-party Intel DLL that was never part of Windows.
Repeated repair scans are not useful if the only error is 8255indi.dll. The next step should be identifying or removing the program that calls it.
If manually comparing DISM and SFC results is taking time without identifying the caller, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system issues and show what needs attention, while repair features require the full version. It is optional, and it does not replace reinstalling the Intel package when that package is the actual cause.
Fix 6: Use System Restore after a recent change
Time needed: 20–45 minutes
Use System Restore when the error began immediately after a driver installation, application removal, update, or system-image change.
- Press
Win+R. - Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point created before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the changes.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore can revert applications, drivers, settings, and system state. It does not replace a missing legacy driver package permanently, so reinstall the correct package afterward if the hardware is still required.
Do not copy 8255indi.dll into a Windows folder
A 32-bit DLL belongs beside the program that loads it, or in the directory expected by its original installer. It does not automatically belong in:
C:WindowsSystem32C:WindowsSysWOW64- The Windows root directory
On 64-bit Windows, the names of those folders are also easy to misunderstand. System32 contains 64-bit system components, while SysWOW64 contains many 32-bit system components. Neither folder is a general-purpose storage location for downloaded DLLs.
A missing dependency can also produce “the specified module could not be found” even when the named DLL exists. The missing item may be another dependency, a driver file, or a required installer component.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why regsvr32 usually will not help
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. A network-driver installer helper is not automatically a self-registering COM DLL.

|---|---|---|
| File not found | The old installer or startup item cannot locate its package files | Reinstall the complete package or remove the caller |
| Missing or corrupted | The package is incomplete, damaged, or quarantined | Restore from verified media and reinstall |
| Specified module not found | The DLL or one of its dependencies is unavailable | Identify the calling program and inspect the full package |
| Not designed to run on Windows | Possible architecture or format mismatch | Check 32-bit versus 64-bit compatibility |
| Error only at startup | Stale Intel utility or startup entry | Disable and uninstall the obsolete software |
| Error after an update | Driver or application change may have left an old reference | Use System Restore, then reinstall or remove the caller |

Do not substitute files named 8255xndi.dll, 82557ndi.dll, or another similarly named Intel installer file. The names may refer to different components, package releases, or adapter families.

FAQ
Is 8255indi.dll a Windows 11 file?
No authoritative evidence shows that it ships with current Windows 10 or Windows 11. It is associated with legacy Intel PRO/100 and 8255x network-driver packages.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Is the file malware?
The filename corresponds to a real Intel legacy installer component, so it is not inherently a random malware filename. A copy from an unknown source can still be modified or unsafe. Verify it against original driver media and scan it before restoring it.
Should I download 8255indi.dll separately?
No. Individual DLL downloads can contain malware, the wrong architecture, or an incompatible build. They also leave the rest of the driver package missing and may not fix the actual caller.
Will Visual C++ Redistributable repair it?
Usually not. 8255indi.dll is associated with an old Intel network-driver installer, not a Microsoft runtime package.
Does registering it with regsvr32 fix the error?
Usually not. regsvr32 is for DLLs designed to register themselves. Reinstall the complete driver package or remove the stale program instead.
Why does the error appear when no Intel adapter is installed?
An old startup item, service, installer reference, or uninstall entry may still be requesting the file. Check Startup apps, Event Viewer, Installed apps, and the original installation logs.
What if the error remains after reinstalling the driver?
The wrong package may have been used, the installer may be incompatible with 64-bit Windows, or another dependency may be missing. Identify the actual caller with Event Viewer, Autoruns, Process Monitor, or the installer log. If the hardware is obsolete, removing the calling software is often the correct fix.
Should I use Device Manager to update this driver?
Only when the adapter is still installed and the package is intended for that exact hardware and Windows version. Current adapters need their own supported drivers; installing an old PRO/100 package for unrelated hardware can cause additional problems.
The practical path is straightforward: trace the caller, restore the complete matching Intel or OEM package if the adapter is still needed, or remove the obsolete software if it is not. 8255indi.dll is a legacy installer component, not a general Windows runtime that belongs in a system directory.
