wkwinuni.dll is a Microsoft Works component, not a Windows system DLL. If Windows reports that wkwinuni.dll is missing, was not found, or could not be loaded, the safest fix is to repair Microsoft Works or remove an orphaned Works startup shortcut.
The most likely situation is that Microsoft Works was uninstalled or damaged while its Microsoft Works Calendar Reminders shortcut remained in the Windows Startup folder. Do not begin by downloading a replacement DLL or copying one into System32.
What is wkwinuni.dll?
wkwinuni.dll is described as Microsoft® Works Unicode Layer. It belongs to Microsoft Works, particularly Works 7.0 and related Works installations.
| Item | Reported information |
|---|---|
| File | wkwinuni.dll |
| Description | Microsoft® Works Unicode Layer |
| Publisher | Microsoft Corporation |
| Product | Microsoft Works 6.0–8.0 and related Works Suites |
| Architecture | 32-bit |
| Reported version | 7.3.616.0 |
| Reported size | About 0.11 MB |
The version and size are reported file metadata, not a guarantee that every Works installation contains exactly the same build. A 64-bit Windows installation can run older 32-bit Works software, but you should not assume that a separate 64-bit wkwinuni.dll exists.

Error messages you may see
Microsoft Works-related errors can appear in several forms, depending on the Works component and Windows version:
Error, a required file wkwinuni.dll could not be found.
Other documented Works errors include:
Ms Works caused an Invalid Page Fault in Module Wkwinuni.dll.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.MS Word has Encountered an Error and Needs to Close.
Wkssb Caused an Invalid Page Fault in Module Wkwinuni.dll.
Common Windows loader wording includes:
- “The program can’t start because wkwinuni.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “There was a problem starting wkwinuni.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “Error loading wkwinuni.dll.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because wkwinuni.dll was not found.”
- “wkwinuni.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
The wording is useful, but the repair path is usually the same: determine whether Works is still installed, then repair the correct installation rather than replacing a generic system file.
First decide whether Microsoft Works is still installed
This decision prevents the two most common mistakes.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
If you no longer use Works
If Microsoft Works was intentionally removed, the DLL is not needed. The error is probably caused by a leftover Microsoft Works Calendar Reminders shortcut that still runs at startup.
Remove that shortcut first.
If you still need Works
If Works appears in the Start menu, in Installed apps, or in Control Panel, the installation may be incomplete or damaged. Repair or reinstall it from the original Works CD or another legitimate installation source.
Do not mix files from different Works editions. A replacement from a different Works release may have the wrong dependencies or version even if the filename matches.
Fix 1: Remove the orphaned Works Calendar Reminders shortcut
This is the safest and most likely fix when Works has already been uninstalled.

Open the Startup folder
- Press
Win+R. - Type:
text
shell:startup
- Press Enter.
- Look for a shortcut named Microsoft Works Calendar Reminders.
- Right-click the shortcut and select Delete.
- Restart Windows.
The shortcut may be in the current user’s Startup folder. If you do not find it there, check the common Startup folder:
- Press
Win+R. - Type:
text
shell:common startup
- Press Enter.
- Delete the Microsoft Works Calendar Reminders shortcut if it is present.
- Restart Windows.
Check Task Manager if the error continues
A startup entry may also be registered outside the Startup folder.
- Press
Ctrl+Shift+Escto open Task Manager. - Select Startup apps.
- Look for an entry mentioning Microsoft Works, Calendar Reminders, or an old Works executable.
- If Works is no longer installed, right-click the entry and choose Disable.
- Restart Windows.
If the error no longer appears after restarting, the problem was an orphaned startup reference. There is no reason to restore wkwinuni.dll when Microsoft Works is no longer required.
Fix 2: Repair Microsoft Works from its installation media
Use this path if you still need Works and the program remains installed.

Try the installed repair option
Some older Microsoft installers offer a repair choice.
- Press
Win+R. - Type:
text
appwiz.cpl
- Press Enter.
- Select Microsoft Works or the relevant Works Suite entry.
- Choose Change, Modify, or Repair, if available.
- Follow the installer prompts.
- Insert the original Works CD if Windows requests it.
- Restart Windows after the repair finishes.
- Launch Works and test the component that previously displayed the error.
The exact button names depend on the Works edition and the installer preserved on the computer. If no repair option is available, reinstalling is usually more reliable.
Reinstall Works
- Open
appwiz.cpl. - Select Microsoft Works.
- Choose Remove or Uninstall.
- Restart Windows if prompted.
- Insert the original Works setup CD.
- Run the installer from the disc.
- Install the same Works edition you previously used.
- Restart Windows.
- Launch Works and test it again.
If the installer does not start automatically, open File Explorer, select the CD drive, and run the setup program from the disc. Avoid downloading an isolated DLL as a substitute for the installer.
Fix 3: Replace the file from the matching Works CD
If the Works installation is present but only this file appears to be damaged or missing, Microsoft’s historical troubleshooting procedure identifies the shared Works folder on the installation CD.
The relevant installed locations may be:
C:Program FilesMSWorksCommonMSSharedWkShared
For Works 8 and Works Suite 2005, the shared location may instead be:
C:Program FilesCommon FilesMicrosoft SharedWorks Shared
The CD source path documented for the Works 7 layout is:
CD_Drive:MSWorksCommonMSSharedWkShared
To replace the file:
- Insert the original Works setup CD.
- Open the disc in File Explorer.
- Browse to the matching Works shared folder.
- Locate
WkWinUni.dll. - Open the installed Works shared folder in another File Explorer window.
- Copy the CD version into the matching installed folder.
- Approve the replacement if Windows asks for administrator permission.
- Restart Works.
Use the file from the same Works edition whenever possible. If the file is missing from the CD, or the installer reports additional missing files, stop replacing individual files and reinstall Works instead.
How to tell whether this worked
The repair succeeded if:
- Works opens without the missing-file message.
- Calendar Reminders starts without an error.
- The Works document or database component that failed now launches.
- The error does not return after restarting Windows.
If the error changes to “The specified module could not be found,” a dependency may be missing. That message does not always mean that wkwinuni.dll itself is absent. Repairing the complete Works installation is the better next step.

Fix 4: Check whether Windows Security quarantined the file
Security software can remove or quarantine an old application file. Do not immediately disable antivirus protection or create a permanent exclusion.
Review Protection History
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Under Current threats, select Protection history.
- Review recent detections for a Works file or
wkwinuni.dll. - Check the detected file’s location and details.
- Restore it only if you can verify that it came from trusted, legitimate Works installation media and the detection is a false positive.
After restoration, restart Works and run another security scan. If the detection returns, do not keep restoring the file. Reinstall Works from trusted media and investigate the detection before continuing.
Fix 5: Repair broader Windows components with DISM and SFC
wkwinuni.dll is normally an application-owned Works file, so System File Checker is not guaranteed to restore it. Use DISM and SFC when other Windows components are also failing, Windows features are behaving abnormally, or the problem began after broader system corruption.
Run DISM
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Enter:
text
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for the command to finish.
- Keep the elevated Command Prompt open.
Run System File Checker
After DISM completes, enter:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Try Works again.
If SFC reports that it repaired corrupted files, test Works after restarting. If it says that no integrity violations were found, the problem is more likely inside the Works installation. If SFC cannot repair some files, repeat the Works repair or reinstall rather than repeatedly copying DLLs into Windows folders.
If manually running DISM and SFC leaves you guessing about which components changed, Outbyte PC Repair can provide a free scan showing reported problems, while the repair itself is performed by the full version; it is optional, and reinstalling Microsoft Works remains the definitive fix for a Works-specific file.
Fix 6: Use System Restore after a recent change
System Restore can help if wkwinuni.dll worked previously and the failure began after a recent application, driver, or system change. It can roll back system files, registry settings, and installed programs without changing personal files, but it is not a substitute for Works installation media.
- Press
Win+R. - Type:
text
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point dated before the Works error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the changes.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
Test Works after the restoration. If the error remains, reinstall or repair Works. Do not use System Restore if there is no suitable restore point.

Microsoft Works was designed for older Windows releases. A 32-bit Works installation may run on a newer 64-bit Windows system, but successful installation does not guarantee full compatibility with current Windows versions.
Install available Windows updates
- Open Start and select Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Choose Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart Windows.
- Test Works again.
Windows Update is not expected to provide wkwinuni.dll itself. Its role here is to address broader compatibility and operating-system problems.
Try compatibility settings
If Works reinstalls but crashes during launch:
- Locate the Works shortcut.
- Right-click it and select Properties.
- Open the Compatibility tab.
- Select Run this program in compatibility mode for.
- Choose an older Windows version offered by Windows.
- Select Apply, then OK.
- Launch Works again.
Compatibility mode may help the application start, but it cannot repair a missing or corrupt Works file. If the program still fails, preserve the original installation and consider recovering a complete licensed installer or system backup.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Drivers and Device Manager: when they matter
A display, printer, storage, or other driver problem can cause Works to crash, but updating a driver will not normally recreate wkwinuni.dll. Use Device Manager only when the Works error is accompanied by hardware problems, graphical corruption, printer failures, or other device errors.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the category related to the failing hardware.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Install a driver Windows identifies.
- Restart Windows.
- Test Works again.
Do not uninstall a working device driver solely because wkwinuni.dll is missing. If Windows cannot identify which of several devices has an outdated driver, Outbyte Driver Updater offers a free scan that identifies reported driver issues, while driver installation is handled by the full version; it is optional and does not replace reinstalling Microsoft Works.
Why regsvr32 is normally not the fix
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide the registration entry point required by Windows. It is commonly associated with ActiveX controls and other registered components.

wkwinuni.dll is documented as a Works application or runtime component, not as an ActiveX control. Therefore, this is not a suitable default repair:
regsvr32 wkwinuni.dll
Running it may produce errors such as a missing entry point or a message that the module could not be loaded. That does not prove that Windows needs a different copy in System32. Repair the Works installation instead.

What not to do
Do not download a random DLL
Avoid third-party DLL download pages and “automatic DLL fixer” utilities. A downloaded file may contain malware, belong to a different Works edition, have the wrong architecture, or lack required dependencies. Even an authentic-looking file may not fix the damaged installation or orphaned startup entry.
No current standalone Microsoft redistributable for wkwinuni.dll is available. The safe sources are:
- The original Microsoft Works installation CD.
- A legitimate Works installer you already own.
- A complete system backup containing the working installation.
- Microsoft Windows repair tools for broader Windows corruption, not for replacing the Works file.
Do not copy it into Windows system directories
Putting the file in System32 or SysWOW64 can create version conflicts and does not correct the Works search path. Keep the file in the matching Works folder.
Do not use the old Windows Installer CleanUp Utility
Historical Works troubleshooting instructions may mention the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility. That utility is obsolete and should not be sought as a current download recommendation. Use the normal uninstall and reinstall process instead.

FAQ
Is wkwinuni.dll part of Windows?
No. It is a Microsoft Works application component. Windows may display the error while starting a leftover Works shortcut, but that does not make the file a protected Windows system DLL.
Which programs use it?
It is associated with Microsoft Works 6.0, 7.0, and 8.0, along with related Works Suites. The exact component calling it depends on the Works installation.
Is there a 64-bit version?
Public file listings identify a 32-bit version. Do not assume that a separate 64-bit replacement exists. Older 32-bit Works software can sometimes run on 64-bit Windows through Windows compatibility support.
Why does the error appear after I uninstalled Works?
The Microsoft Works Calendar Reminders shortcut may have remained in Startup. Remove that shortcut and restart Windows. Reinstalling the DLL is unnecessary if you no longer use Works.

What if the file exists but Windows says it is invalid?
The file may be corrupt, from the wrong Works edition, the wrong architecture, incomplete, or modified. Replace it from matching Works media or reinstall Works. Do not copy another internet download over it.
What if Microsoft Works still will not run after reinstalling?
The remaining problem may be compatibility with the current Windows release rather than wkwinuni.dll. Try compatibility settings, recover a complete licensed installation, or restore the system from a backup that predates the failure.
