If you want co-op horror built around atmosphere, uncertainty, teamwork and sustained tension—not a loop of repeated sudden startles—the right question is how a game creates fear, not whether it has jump scares at all. The available evidence does not verify nine games against that standard, so this guide separates a confirmed co-op option from promising titles that still need game-specific verification rather than presenting an unsupported top nine.
What “doesn’t rely on cheap scares” means
It does not mean “contains no jump scares.” A horror game can use sudden shocks and still build most of its fear through darkness, uncertainty, pursuit, resource pressure or the strain of coordinating with friends. Conversely, multiplayer chaos can make a frightening situation funny without making the game atmosphere-first.

That distinction is reflected in an individual reader request for co-op psychological horror described as “not jump scares, not action.” It is a useful expression of a preference, not evidence of a broader player consensus. For this list, a genuine recommendation would need evidence both that a title supports co-op and that its fear design fits the atmosphere-and-tension criterion.

DEVOUR
DEVOUR is identified by its official site and Steam listing as a co-op horror survival game for one to four players. Those sources establish the cooperative format, but not whether the game primarily relies on atmosphere or sudden, intense scares. It is therefore a verified co-op horror option, not a verified match for a “no cheap scares” preference.

Other titles to investigate, not verified picks
These games appear in recent co-op horror recommendations or genre coverage, but the available material does not establish enough about their current co-op details and scare design to recommend them as confirmed atmosphere-first choices.

- Phasmophobia: A plausible investigation-focused candidate surfaced in co-op horror recommendations, but those references do not establish whether its fear depends more on sustained uncertainty or sudden scares.
- Lethal Company: It appears in co-op recommendations and coverage of multiplayer horror’s growth. The described space includes chaotic social horror, which may not suit players looking for uninterrupted psychological dread.
- GTFO, Sons of the Forest and The Outlast Trials: They are named as co-op horror options in a roundup, but game-specific evidence is still needed for current co-op details and how each creates fear.
- REPO: It appears as an example of later co-op horror alongside Lethal Company and Phasmophobia. That supports genre context, not a conclusion about its suitability for this preference.
These are leads for comparison, not endorsements or a ranked nine-game list. A useful check for each is whether its official store or developer page confirms player count and online or local play, followed by gameplay evidence showing whether tension comes from exploration, stealth, survival pressure, pursuit or frequent startles. Also consider session structure and how much voice-chat humor changes the mood.

Two single-player examples help clarify the distinction, but should not be mistaken for co-op recommendations. Ricardo Cesteiro, co-founder and producer at Camel 101, said of Those Who Remain: “When we set out, one of our important goals was to create a scary game without resorting to jump scares.” That is a direct statement of design intent for that game, not evidence about the co-op candidates above.

- VHS: Very Horror Stories is a Horror Role Play Game inspired by ‘70’s, ‘80’s and ‘90’s classics such as Hellraiser, Nightmare, Alien, Halloween and many more, coming in three stand-alone boxed sets that allow you to play in a different subgenre of Horror each.
Darkwood is another useful reference point in discussions of atmospheric or jump-scare-averse horror design. The sources available here do not establish it as a co-op game, so it does not belong in a co-op list on that basis.

How to choose with friends
- Confirm the mode first: Check the current official store page or developer site for player count and whether co-op is online, local or both.
- Look beyond the genre label: “Co-op horror” does not say whether fear comes from slow-burn atmosphere, unpredictable threats, action or startling encounters.
- Match the mood to your group: Voice chat and unpredictable teamwork can turn tense horror into social comedy. That may be a feature or a mismatch, depending on what your group wants.
- Use a higher bar for a “no jump scares” promise: Unless a developer explicitly rules them out, treat the absence of jump scares as unverified. Even a stated design goal is about intent, not proof that every player will experience the game the same way.
