9 Great Racing Games to Play on Ubuntu in 2026

Ubuntu players can choose from native Linux racers and Windows games that may run through Steam Play with Proton. These nine options span simulation, rally, open-world, kart and arcade racing—but compatibility, system requirements and online features vary by title. This is a current selection, not a confirmed recovery of a 2025 list: the Ubuntu-focused guide cited here was updated August 13, 2026. (MakeUseOf, Aug. 13, 2026)

How to read this list

The games below are examples highlighted in a current Ubuntu gaming roundup; the available information does not establish which nine titles appeared in a 2025 edition. It also does not provide verified prices, system requirements, or compatibility ratings for every game, so check each Steam listing before buying or installing.

Native Linux support and Proton are different routes. Canonical describes Proton as “software developed by Valve that allows Windows games to run on Linux, and is used by the Steam Play client.” Canonical’s Ubuntu Steam documentation explains Steam Play configuration and advises checking title-specific compatibility information.

Nine racing games to consider

1. Assetto Corsa EVO — circuit simulation

A simulation-focused pick for players who want a more demanding track-racing experience. The 2026 Ubuntu roundup includes it, but the evidence available here does not establish its exact current Linux route or hardware requirements; verify both on its store page and in recent compatibility reports.

3. DiRT Rally 2.0 — rally

For rally stages rather than closed-circuit racing, the roundup features DiRT Rally 2.0. Check its current Steam listing and title-specific reports: Proton compatibility can vary, and offline functionality does not guarantee that online features work.

Choose by compatibility, hardware and play style

Use these distinctions to narrow the list rather than assuming that every game follows the same installation path.

  • Prefer a native Linux version: Start with games the roundup identifies as native examples, such as Automobilista 2, art of rally, Distance and SuperTuxKart. Check the store listing because support can change.
  • Considering a Windows-only Steam game: Steam Play can run some non-native games with Proton, but compatibility is title-specific. Canonical warns that unsupported titles vary in functionality and points players to ProtonDB for specific reports. See Ubuntu’s Steam guidance and check ProtonDB.
  • Have limited hardware: Compare your PC with the game’s listed minimum and recommended requirements. The available roundup does not supply comparable specs for all nine games, so demanding racers should not be treated as safe choices for older hardware without checking.
  • Need a free option: SuperTuxKart is described as free; Trackmania is described as having a free tier. Verify current terms on the relevant game pages before relying on either description.
  • Want online multiplayer: Look for recent, game-specific reports about multiplayer and anti-cheat, not just whether the game launches. A working single-player session does not establish that every online mode functions.

Set up Steam Play for a Windows game

  1. Open the game’s Steam store page and check its supported operating systems and system requirements. Steam notes that Linux users may be able to use Steam Play with Windows-only games, but it does not support purchases made with the intention of using emulation or similar utilities. Read Steam’s compatibility guidance.
  2. In Steam, open Settings > Compatibility and enable Steam Play for supported titles. If you want to try a non-native title, enable Steam Play for other titles as well; consult Canonical’s current Ubuntu instructions for the precise options in your Steam version. Ubuntu Steam setup.
  3. For a particular game, open its Library entry, choose Properties > Compatibility, and select a Proton version if needed. A different version may change results, but it is not a guarantee that the game or its online features will work.
  4. Install and launch the game, then test the modes you actually plan to use. If it fails, consult recent reports for that title on ProtonDB and compare notes on the Proton version and features that work.

Will a racing wheel work?

A wheel can suit simulation racers, but it is optional; a controller or keyboard may be enough for other styles. Do not assume a particular wheel works with a particular Ubuntu game without checking both device and title compatibility. Ubuntu’s Steam documentation also links to controller setup guidance, but the cited material does not verify any specific wheel-and-game pairing. Ubuntu gaming and controller guidance.

Where to verify before you install

  • Steam store pages show supported operating systems and system requirements for individual listings.
  • ProtonDB provides community reports for Windows games run through Proton. Treat these as changing user reports, not an official guarantee.
  • GamingOnLinux maintains Linux gaming coverage and compatibility information; verify the individual game’s latest status rather than relying on a general category count.
