What kind of game is 9 Kings?
9 Kings is a turn-based roguelike deckbuilder with auto-battler, tower-defense and city-building elements. Sad Socket develops it; Hooded Horse and INSTINCT3 publish it. It entered Steam Early Access on 24 May 2025, according to the official wiki.

The core loop ties kingdom construction to combat: play cards to develop your territory, then send your forces into battles against opposing kings. The game’s official description calls it a “fast-paced roguelike kingdom builder,” while its promotional promise to “Break the game with thousands of insane builds” points to the appeal of experimenting with combinations rather than following one fixed strategy.

Your choices span more than the cards in your hand. Buildings and units determine what your kingdom can field; spells and perks add further effects; positioning influences how forces meet the enemy. Events and rival kings add variation between runs. The interaction among those elements is what makes a build feel broken: a choice can become much stronger when it supports the rest of your setup.

That is an intended power fantasy, not a promise that the game has no difficulty. A build’s strength depends on the combination you assemble and the challenges a run presents. The strategic question is not simply which card is strongest in isolation, but which choices fit together into a plan capable of carrying your kingdom through successive battles.
What play formats are available?
The official wiki describes several ways to play. Their presence and details can depend on the game’s development state; as of 13 October 2026, the game was still in Early Access.

If you enjoy tinkering with deck and kingdom-layout combinations, the construction-and-combat loop is the main draw. If you would rather watch armies resolve a battle than plan how cards, buildings and positioning support one another, that balance of activities may be less appealing.

As of 13 October 2026, 9 Kings remained in Early Access. Sad Socket’s patch #31 announcement, dated 7 October, identified version 0.9.8 and described quality-of-life and balance improvements, work on remaining known critical bugs, and an expected 1.0 launch the following month. The Steam store page describes the Early Access version as fully playable and says development uses the period to expand and improve the game with community feedback.

On 16 September 2026, Sad Socket announced that 1.0 was planned for 12 November 2026. That was a developer-announced date, not a completed release as of 13 October. The announcement also set out planned content targets: 130+ cards, 140+ decrees, 110+ perks and 80+ quests, alongside Joker custom mode. These are Sad Socket’s announced scope figures, not independently verified counts of content already shipped. The announcement is available through the official Steam news.
Early Access status matters if you are deciding when to play: the game was presented as playable, but its balance and content were still being developed. A date or content target announced ahead of launch should not be read as proof that the planned release or every target has already arrived.

Who is 9 Kings for?
- Try it if you like card-driven strategy, kingdom building and discovering how separate systems can reinforce one another.
- Solo players can focus on the 33-turn run structure, with optional endless play described by the official wiki.
- Players seeking other formats can look to the wiki-listed multiplayer and quest modes, while checking the current Steam listing for availability in the version they play.
- Consider waiting if you specifically want the announced 1.0 release or Joker custom mode; as of 13 October 2026, those were still future plans.
9 Kings is most compelling when treated as a strategy sandbox with a roguelike run structure: build around the cards and tools you have, adapt to the rival kings and see how far a well-supported combination can go. The game’s “break the game” language describes that goal of discovering extreme synergies—not a guarantee that every attempt will produce an unstoppable kingdom.
