In Manor Lords, early success depends on balancing supplies, housing, land and labor—not just placing buildings quickly. These nine tips focus on decisions that can keep a new settlement stable while you learn the game’s systems. Manor Lords is in Early Access, so mechanics can change; check the in-game Help menu and the official wiki guide for definitions and current rules.
1. Check supplies before you run short
The supplies panel estimates how many months remain before stored goods run out. Use it as a warning indicator and check it regularly, especially as the settlement grows.

- Each family consumes one food per month.
- Each burgage plot consumes one fuel per month for household use. That is per plot, not per family, so a duplex does not double this household fuel requirement.
- Some workplaces also need fuel, adding demand beyond household use.
- Winter fuel consumption doubles.
These figures are rules stated in the Manor Lords Official Wiki beginner guide. Keep workplace needs and seasonal changes in mind when judging how long your stock will last.

The beginner guide describes the seasons as spring (March–May), summer (June–August), autumn (September–November) and winter (December–February). Seasonal timing affects what work and resources are available, so plan ahead rather than assuming every task can be done whenever you need it.
#1 Best Overall
- Summer: crops grow.
- Autumn: harvest, plowing and sowing take place.
- Winter: no seasonal resources are available, and fuel use doubles.
These are the guide’s documented seasonal details; they should not be read as meaning every crop or resource follows an identical schedule. Check the current in-game Help menu for mechanics that may have changed.
3. Leave room for families to move in
Approval affects monthly population change, but growth also requires available living space. A high approval score cannot add families if there is nowhere for them to live.
| Approval | Monthly family change |
|---|---|
| 75–100 | +2 families |
| 50–74 | +1 family |
| 25–49 | No change |
| 0–24 | −1 family |
The official wiki guide lists these thresholds and says approval depends on market resource variety and church level; effects can also depend on new-game settings. Keep suitable housing available if you want population growth.

Approval and public order are separate indicators. The official guide says public order helps prevent crime and citizens turning to banditry; below 100%, those events always have a chance to occur. Monitor the indicator rather than assuming a strong approval score removes this risk.

5. Shape your settlement around roads and plots
Manor Lords does not require a rigid city grid. Its Steam store description says building placement and rotation are free, and that settlement layout follows roads and allotted space. Burgage plots subdivide according to those choices, while backyard extensions can support household production such as vegetables, chickens and goats.
Before committing to a plot, inspect its shape, road access and likely subdivision. A layout that works for one building may not leave the right space for the homes or extensions you want later.
6. Place production with the land in mind
Convenience is only one part of choosing where to build. The official store description calls out soil fertility, animal populations, deposits and forests as considerations, and warns that unchecked expansion can displace deer, reduce fertility without crop rotation and deforest the region.

Weigh immediate access to a resource against pressure on the land around it. Expanding extraction may help now, but it can also damage the conditions that support later production. Avoid treating every resource site as an invitation to build as close as possible.

7. Trade real surplus, not stock you still need
Trade routes let you sell surplus goods to traveling merchants. Exports generate wealth that can support home upgrades and imports, and eventually contribute to the lord’s treasury through taxes, according to the official Steam description.
Before exporting, check the actual surplus after reservations. The beginner guide distinguishes total stock from goods available beyond reserved amounts; a stockpile that looks large may include supplies needed for building or household demands. Selling only what is genuinely surplus helps avoid converting a short-term cash gain into a shortage.

Calling up militia is not just a military choice. The official store description notes that the economy can come to a standstill while peasants form ranks. Mercenaries, by contrast, cost personal wealth.
Consider the urgency of the threat, your readiness and what work will stop if you mobilize. That does not make militia a poor choice in every situation; it means the cost includes lost labor as well as battlefield risk.

9. Protect soldiers and account for battle conditions
Every fallen soldier represents a person lost from the city, and the official description highlights fatigue, weather and equipment as factors to consider in battle. Prepare and position troops with those costs in mind rather than treating a fight as a simple count of units.
The store description says skilled command can allow a smaller force to defeat a larger one, but that is not a guarantee. Use the available tactical advantages without assuming they will erase differences in force or preparation.
Why beginner advice can go stale
Manor Lords remains in Early Access. Steam’s listing says: “Games in Early Access are not complete and may or may not change further.” The official wiki also cautions that its guide may be incomplete or change during development. For version-sensitive details, check the current game’s Help menu and compare them with the official wiki rather than relying on an older guide alone.
