Plug in the correct charger, select your laptop’s Performance or Turbo mode, set Windows to Best performance, and assign demanding games to High performance in Windows Graphics settings.
These changes are not universal FPS boosters. They help when the laptop is power-limited, using the wrong GPU, running at the wrong refresh rate, or spending too much time on expensive visual effects. They can also increase heat, fan noise, power consumption and battery drain. Test changes one at a time using the same game scene or benchmark.

Before changing anything: establish a baseline
Record the laptop’s current power profile, average FPS, 1% lows or frame-time graph if available, GPU and CPU utilization, temperatures and whether the game is running on the integrated or dedicated GPU. Use the same resolution, graphics preset, refresh rate and repeatable scene for every comparison.
Change one setting, restart the game—or Windows when required—and test for several minutes. Include traversal or combat if those moments normally cause stutter. Keep a change only if it improves the result without introducing excessive heat, crashes or worse frame-time consistency.

1. Plug in the charger and switch to Performance or Turbo mode
What it changes
Gaming laptops commonly reduce CPU and GPU power on battery. The manufacturer’s control application may also change fan curves, platform power limits and hybrid-graphics behavior. Typical labels include Performance, Turbo, Extreme Performance, Ultimate, Discrete GPU and dGPU only, but the available choices vary by brand and model.
What to do
- Connect the original AC adapter, or a sufficiently powerful adapter approved for the laptop.
- Open the manufacturer’s control utility.
- Select its Performance, Turbo or equivalent profile.
- If available, select a discrete-only, Ultimate or MUX mode.
- Restart if the utility requests it.
- Run the same game test again.
NVIDIA describes Performance mode as the highest-performance option when fan noise is not a concern, with Balanced and Quiet intended as compromises for noise and power use. See NVIDIA’s notebook power-mode guidance.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
When not to use it
Do not leave the most aggressive profile enabled for ordinary battery use. It can increase fan noise, surface temperature and power consumption. A USB-C charger that is underpowered for the model may not permit the highest performance state. A MUX or discrete-only mode can also reduce battery life and may disable battery-saving GPU switching.
Turbo may increase fan speed without increasing FPS if the GPU is already limited by its power ceiling or if the game is CPU-limited. If clocks are stable and utilization points to another bottleneck, raising the power profile further will not solve it.
How to undo it and what to measure
Return the OEM utility to Balanced, Quiet or Hybrid graphics mode. Measure FPS, frame-time consistency, temperatures, fan noise and sustained performance after several minutes—not just the first minute of play. NVIDIA also notes that supported notebook power selections can depend on the adapter and lid state; see its power-mode reference.

Recommended use
Use Best performance while plugged in and gaming, then return to Balanced for everyday work. If the menu is unavailable, the OEM utility may control the setting, or the system may expose the legacy Power Options panel instead. Traditional High performance or Ultimate Performance plans may be hidden or replaced on current Windows installations, so do not treat their absence as a fault.

- Secure and Universal Compatibility: Designed with 2 stoppers on the front surface, this laptop cooler prevents laptops from slipping and keeps 12-17 inch laptops—including Apple Macbook Pro Air, HP, Alienware, Dell, ASUS, and more—cool and secure during use.
How to undo it and what to measure
Select Balanced from the same menu. Compare sustained FPS, CPU clocks, GPU clocks and temperatures. If Best performance changes nothing, check the charger, OEM profile, GPU assignment and thermal behavior rather than repeatedly changing power plans.
3. Assign each game to the High-performance GPU
Why it matters
Hybrid-graphics laptops contain an integrated GPU for efficiency and a dedicated NVIDIA GeForce or AMD Radeon GPU for demanding workloads. If Windows launches a game on the integrated processor, selecting the correct GPU can produce a dramatic improvement. If the game already uses the dedicated GPU, this setting may do little or nothing.
Exact Windows 11 path
Settings → System → Display → Graphics
- Add the game if it is not listed.
- Select the game entry and choose Options.
- Select High performance.
- Choose Save.
- Restart the game.
Windows exposes Let Windows decide, Power saving and High performance on systems with more than one GPU. Microsoft documents this control in its guide to Windows 11 graphics and windowed-game optimizations.
Choose the actual game executable, not only Steam, Epic Games Launcher or another launcher. Some games use multiple executables, and anti-cheat components can make the correct file less obvious.
How to verify and recover
Run the game and check Task Manager’s GPU engine column, or use the NVIDIA or AMD overlay. Dedicated-GPU utilization, clock speed and VRAM activity should correspond to the game. A display may still be physically routed through the integrated GPU even while the dedicated GPU renders the game; GPU selection and display routing are not the same thing.
If the High performance option is missing, the laptop may have only one GPU, the driver may be incomplete, the wrong executable may be selected, or the manufacturer may control switching through its own application. Do not force the dedicated GPU globally unless you accept higher idle power use and heat.

4. Enable Optimizations for windowed games
Exact path
Settings → System → Display → Graphics → Default settings → Optimizations for windowed games
Microsoft says this feature applies to compatible DirectX 10 and DirectX 11 games running in windowed or borderless-windowed modes. It moves compatible titles to a newer flip-model presentation path, which can reduce frame latency and enable features such as Auto HDR and variable refresh rate on supported systems.
This is not a blanket FPS booster and is less relevant to a game using exclusive full-screen mode. Turn it on, restart the title and compare frame-time consistency and latency.

Per-game exceptions
Under Custom options for apps, select a game and choose Options. Depending on the system, Windows may provide controls for the high-performance GPU, disabling windowed-game optimizations and disabling Auto HDR. Restart the game after changing any of them.
Recommended Free Tools
If a borderless title develops stutter, HDR problems or compatibility issues, disable the optimization for that game and retest. Restore the default by returning to the same menu and re-enabling the global option or removing the per-game override.
5. Set the maximum refresh rate and compatible VRR
Exact path
Settings → System → Display → Advanced display
Select the laptop panel and choose its highest supported refresh rate, such as 120 Hz, 144 Hz or 240 Hz. The choices can depend on the panel, power state, GPU path and driver. Battery-saving modes may reduce the available refresh rate, and some laptops expose their fastest mode only while plugged in.
Refresh rate does not create additional FPS. It determines how often the display can present a new image, so a high-refresh panel can show more of the frames the laptop is already rendering. Variable refresh rate, when supported by both the display and graphics path, can reduce tearing and smooth fluctuations.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Recommended use and recovery
Use the maximum refresh rate for gaming, then choose a lower rate when battery life matters. If VRR is available, enable it and test a frame cap slightly below the panel’s practical refresh ceiling. The best cap depends on the display, game and VRR range; watch frame-time consistency rather than assuming one universal number.
A MUX mode or external monitor can change which refresh-rate and VRR features are available. If an external display behaves differently, test its connection and settings separately.
6. A/B test Hardware-Accelerated GPU Scheduling
Where to find it
When supported, look under Settings → System → Display → Graphics → Default graphics settings.
Hardware-Accelerated GPU Scheduling, or HAGS, changes how some graphics scheduling work is handled. Results vary by GPU generation, driver, game engine, overlays, capture software and hybrid-graphics design. It is a diagnostic A/B test—not a setting that should be blindly enabled because a list online calls it a performance boost.

How to test it
- Record whether HAGS is currently on or off.
- Change the setting.
- Restart Windows.
- Run the same benchmark or repeatable scene.
- Keep the state that gives better frame-time consistency, stability and latency.
If the option is absent, the GPU, driver or Windows configuration may not support it. If a game begins stuttering, crashing or causing display-driver timeouts, restore the previous state, restart Windows, temporarily disable overlays and monitoring tools, and test again with the laptop’s default GPU profile.
7. Update—or roll back—the graphics driver and use a per-game profile
What to update
- NVIDIA or AMD graphics driver
- Laptop chipset and platform drivers
- Game client and patches
- Windows updates
- BIOS or firmware only when the manufacturer’s release applies to the exact model
Update a driver when it fixes a known game problem, supports a new release or adds a feature you need. The newest driver is not automatically the fastest or most stable choice for every title.
NVIDIA’s NVIDIA App provides driver management, game optimization, per-game controls and supported rollback paths. AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition provides global and game-specific profiles plus performance-tuning and reset controls; available options vary by notebook hardware and installation type. See AMD’s graphics-profile guidance and tuning guidance.
Prefer targeted profiles
Use per-game settings instead of aggressive global overrides. NVIDIA’s Prefer maximum performance power-management option can help in particular clock-management or throttling situations, but it is not a universal requirement for every game. Do not force it globally without a reason.
If performance or stability worsens immediately after a driver update, reset the game profile, use the laptop manufacturer’s validated driver or roll back to the previous driver. A BIOS update is not a routine FPS tweak: it can affect fan curves, power limits, GPU switching and memory compatibility. Follow the manufacturer’s exact model instructions and keep the original recovery path available.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.8. Lower the expensive in-game settings first
Do not switch every option to Low. Start with the settings most likely to consume GPU time:
- Render resolution or resolution scale
- Ray tracing
- Volumetric lighting, fog and clouds
- Shadows and contact shadows
- Reflections
- Ambient occlusion
- Crowd, view-distance and simulation density
- Hair, particles and effects
Ray tracing is often one of the first settings to disable when the goal is higher rasterized FPS. If you want to keep ray-traced effects, reduce their quality and use an upscaler before lowering every other visual setting.
Texture quality is different. Textures primarily depend on available VRAM and streaming behavior. If VRAM is not full, lowering textures may make the game look worse while producing little or no FPS gain. Reduce textures when VRAM is saturated or texture streaming is causing hitching.
Change one option at a time and monitor GPU utilization, VRAM usage, average FPS and 1% lows. A GPU running near full utilization usually benefits from resolution, ray-tracing or effects reductions. Low GPU utilization with a busy CPU points toward a CPU, simulation, background-process or game-engine limit instead.

9. Use upscaling, sensible FPS caps and latency settings
Start with DLSS, FSR or the game’s supported upscaler
Temporal or AI upscaling can reduce the internal render workload while preserving more detail than an extremely low native resolution. Start with Quality, move to Balanced if the GPU remains limited, and use Performance for demanding high-resolution output. Ultra Performance is a last resort because its lower internal resolution can produce obvious image-quality compromises.
Preset names are starting points, not guarantees. The right mode depends on output resolution, screen size, game implementation, GPU and tolerance for shimmering or reconstruction artifacts. NVIDIA’s DLSS guidance provides additional context. Do not promise a fixed FPS gain or claim that DLSS or FSR doubles performance.
Frame generation can increase the number of displayed frames in supported games, but it does not replace adequate underlying rendered FPS. It can alter latency and produce artifacts. Treat it as a smoothness feature, not the same thing as doubling true rendering performance. NVIDIA’s current documentation describes DLSS 4.5 Dynamic Multi Frame Generation as dependent on compatible hardware, drivers and games; see its DLSS 4.5 announcement.
Cap FPS for smoother frame times
If FPS is high but gameplay feels uneven, cap the game below the display’s VRR ceiling. A stable frame rate can feel better than a higher but constantly fluctuating average, while also reducing heat and fan noise. Test the in-game limiter first; driver-level limiters are useful when a title lacks a reliable one.
Use Reflex or Radeon latency features for their intended purpose
NVIDIA Reflex is primarily a latency feature, not a generic FPS booster. In supported competitive games, prefer the in-game Reflex option. On + Boost can be useful when supported, but may increase power draw and heat. NVIDIA explains Reflex’s latency purpose in its technical guidance.
AMD Software: Adrenalin includes per-game controls and features such as FSR, Radeon Anti-Lag and Radeon Boost where supported. Availability and behavior depend on the GPU, driver and game, so enable them per title and measure latency, smoothness and image quality rather than applying every feature globally.
What to do when the tweaks do not fix the problem
The game is still slow after Best performance
- Confirm that the correct dedicated GPU is active.
- Check that the charger is connected and recognized.
- Look for thermal throttling after several minutes.
- Determine whether the game is CPU-limited rather than GPU-limited.
- Allow shader compilation and asset streaming to finish.
- Check whether the OEM utility is overriding Windows’ power mode.
Do not keep increasing power settings if clocks are stable and utilization indicates a different bottleneck.

FPS is high but gameplay feels uneven
- Use a frame-rate cap below the VRR ceiling.
- Disable overlays and capture tools temporarily.
- Test HAGS in the opposite state.
- Reset global GPU overrides and use the game’s profile defaults.
- Review 1% lows and frame-time graphs instead of average FPS alone.
The High-performance GPU option is missing
The laptop may have one GPU, the game may not be added, the driver may be incomplete, or the selected file may be a launcher rather than the game executable. Some manufacturers handle switching entirely through their own utilities. Update or reinstall the appropriate laptop graphics driver, then check Windows Graphics settings again.
Temperatures rise after changing settings
Return Windows to Balanced outside gaming, use a game-specific FPS cap, and reduce ray tracing, volumetrics and shadows. Improve airflow around the laptop and clean vents according to the manufacturer’s instructions. A cooling stand may help only when intake airflow or sustained heat is the problem; it cannot correct a wrong GPU assignment, an underpowered charger or a CPU/GPU bottleneck.
Do not treat BIOS power-limit changes, undervolting or overclocking as beginner settings. They are model-specific and can introduce instability.
Recommended order of operations
- Plug in the correct charger and select the OEM Performance or Turbo profile.
- Set Windows to Best performance.
- Assign the game to the High-performance GPU.
- Confirm the display’s maximum refresh rate and compatible VRR.
- Disable or reduce ray tracing and the most expensive effects.
- Enable DLSS, FSR or another supported upscaler.
- Set a stable FPS cap and enable supported latency features.
- Only then A/B test HAGS or driver-level overrides.
For battery life, reverse the priorities: use Balanced or Quiet mode, hybrid graphics and a lower refresh rate. For maximum FPS, accept that higher performance generally costs more heat, noise and power. The goal is not the largest number in a benchmark; it is a stable frame rate that matches your display and remains consistent throughout a real gaming session.
