The character has to work in missions, too, so writers and designers shape scenes together rather than treating the script as separate from gameplay. Dan Houser’s accounts of GTA V and Niko Bellic offer specific examples—not a verified formula for every Rockstar game.
How do you begin a Grand Theft Auto game?
In a 2013 interview about GTA V, Rockstar co-founder and co-writer Dan Houser described the team’s earlier process as starting with the character and the reason they are in the world. From there, the team considers what to do with that person; the story can grow from the character’s past and what lies ahead. Houser said the process felt organic when the character and motivation were right. The Guardian’s account of the creative process also describes the team considering GTA V’s three protagonists in relation to the earlier, single-character journeys.
That starting point changes the central question from “What crime or set piece comes next?” to “What would this person want, and what would they do here?” Plot still matters, but it has a source in the protagonist’s motives rather than being only a sequence of events imposed from outside.
What makes GTA characters believable or engaging?
Flaws that are specific to the person
Houser described GTA V’s protagonists as nuanced anti-heroes rather than superheroes: “These characters aren’t superheroes, they have this griminess to them, these nuances.” Their imperfections are not simply a checklist of defects meant to make them seem realistic. Asked about the cast, he said the team was not working from a checklist because he did not think that approach would reliably produce believable or engaging characters. His 2013 interview with The Guardian connects that intention to the leads’ distinct drives and the lives they have beyond the action.

- TEMPEST 3D AUDIO — Hear the sounds of the world with pinpoint precision: the throttle of a stolen supercar, the rattle of neighbouring gunfire, the roar of a helicopter overhead, and more.
- Please note that although this game is Region Free or Region Unlocked and will work on all systems, this is the European version and may differ from the local version in age rating, labeling or instructions.
Believability therefore does not require a character to be likable, morally sound or consistently right. A character can be compromised and still feel coherent if their choices, perspective and conflicts fit the person the story has established.
Contrasting motives and relationships
In a later retrospective conversation, Houser described GTA V’s three leads through contrasting drives, using “ego, id, and the drive to get ahead” as shorthand. That is his interpretation of the creative choices, not an objective personality test or a complete explanation of why the characters work. Its useful point is that difference creates dramatic friction: people who want different things do not respond to the same situation in the same way. Houser’s interview transcript also discusses character synopses and the relationship between the protagonists.

How does voice make a character feel real?
Houser’s retrospective account of writing Niko Bellic shows how speech and point of view can make an idea for a character feel concrete. He described trying to capture the experience of writing a Serbian immigrant, then finding a phrase or way of speaking that made Niko come alive in his mind. He characterized Niko as awkward and an outsider, with a particular confidence, and set that voice against the more Americanized energy of his cousin.
The example is not evidence that every GTA character was created the same way. It does show why voice is more than a collection of catchphrases: speech can reveal how someone sees their surroundings and how they differ from the people closest to them. A character’s perspective becomes legible through both what they say and the contrast between their voice and another person’s.

Why show protagonists outside the action?
Houser pointed to what Michael, Trevor and Franklin do when they are not acting as action anti-heroes as part of GTA V’s believability. Their existence beyond the next crime or mission gives the player other ways to understand them: as people with habits, relationships and concerns, not just as instruments for the plot.
That everyday dimension sits alongside GTA’s heightened criminal stories and satire; it does not turn the games into unexaggerated portraits of ordinary life. The contrast is what matters. Ordinary behavior can make an outsized action plot feel more grounded without reducing its spectacle.

How do character writing and mission design fit together?
For Houser, writing dialogue for a mission was collaborative work. He described a writer and designer sitting together and reviewing mission dialogue line by line: “When it comes to actually writing the exact dialogue for within the body of the mission, the writer and the designer sit together and go through it line by line by line.” The same account explains that story material could be removed or reworked when a mission did not work as gameplay. The Guardian’s 2013 interview describes this writer-designer relationship.
This means character writing has to serve the playable scene as well as the dramatic one. A line, exchange or story beat may need to change if it disrupts how the mission plays. The character’s voice and motivation are developed within the constraints of the game, not in a script that can be completed independently and simply dropped into it.

What has Rockstar said about GTA VI’s characters and realism?
A 2026 PC Gamer report on GTA VI’s satire and characters offers a current comparison point. Writer Elizabeth Gauvey-Kern described the two protagonists as “vulnerable, tough, flawed, right sometimes, wrong sometimes, able to learn from each other.” That account echoes the emphasis on imperfection and relationships, while remaining a statement about the protagonists as described by the writer.
In the same report, Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson said realism can help immersion, but sometimes needs to be set aside for what is convenient for the player. Taken together, their comments point to a balance between convincing characters and a usable game experience. They do not establish GTA VI’s complete writing process or a formal rule that applies to every Rockstar production.
