Start with the discovery shelf that matches what you want: taste-based shelves for personalized suggestions, or global shelves for games being surfaced broadly. Then narrow the options by genre, premise, and what the preview shows. S&box lists games rather than offering a fixed menu of classic modes, so treat “game mode” as the kind of play you want to find.
Where should you start?
S&box’s main menu puts games at the center of discovery. Facepunch’s 1 September 2026 update says the redesign removed the server browser because the team considered it the wrong way to discover S&box. Video previews are intended to give players a sense of what games look like in play.
The update says the previous discovery page showed everyone the same 31 games, which Facepunch described as 1.2% of games on the platform. The new algorithm, according to Facepunch, reaches around 70%; the company attributes the remaining 30% to games missing basics such as a thumbnail, genre, tags, or screenshots. Those are Facepunch’s reported coverage figures, not an independent audit or a measure of how likely you are to enjoy any particular recommendation.
What do the discovery shelves mean?
Taste-based shelves
“Because you played X,” “Players like you played,” and “More Genre X games” are the taste-oriented shelves named in Facepunch’s update. They are a sensible place to begin when you want suggestions related to games or genres that already appeal to you. Facepunch describes the shelves as based partly on personal taste, but does not publish which personal signals they use or how they are weighted.

Global-metric shelves
“Trending,” “Up & Coming,” and “Highly Rated” are the update’s global-metric shelves. Browse these when you want to see games being surfaced more broadly, rather than suggestions framed around your tastes. Popularity or rating alone cannot establish whether a game suits your mood or preferred play style.
How do you narrow the list?
- Pick the session you want. Decide whether you are in the mood for a particular genre or premise, and whether you want solo or social, competitive or relaxed play. These preferences give you a useful filter before you start browsing.
- Choose a shelf family. Begin with taste-based shelves when you want personalized suggestions. Use global-metric shelves when you would rather scan broadly surfaced options.
- Shortlist two or three candidates. Check each listing’s genre, tags, and description against your mood. Use the video preview and screenshots, where available, to see whether the play looks like what you have in mind.
For a relaxed solo session, for example, look first for a listing whose genre and description suggest that kind of play, then check its preview. If you want a competitive session with other players, favor listings that make that style clear in their descriptions or videos. These are ways to compare candidates, not claims about how S&box ranks them.

What if the in-game list is not enough?
The community-powered s&box Explorer offers another way to browse listings, with titles, descriptions, tags, and filtering controls. It says its data comes from sbox.game and updates daily, and identifies itself as unaffiliated with Facepunch. Its filters can help you explore the catalog, but they should not be mistaken for controls in the official in-game menu.
S&box is also a creation platform: Facepunch’s Getting Started page is for people exploring the engine and starting projects, rather than for choosing a game to play.

What the recommendations cannot tell you
Facepunch’s public update describes the shelf categories, but does not disclose the ranking formula, exact ordering rules, or the signals used for personalized suggestions. No shelf is objectively best: use it to find candidates, then judge fit from the listing and preview. If those do not tell you enough, the discovery list cannot settle whether the game will suit you.
