Do You Need to Play Kojima’s Earlier Games Before OD?

No. Nothing publicly available confirms that you need to play an earlier Hideo Kojima game before OD. Kojima Productions announced it as a new project about fear and the boundary between games and film, and later coverage has not established a story connection to any previous title. That answer is an inference from what has been announced—not an explicit statement from Kojima that no prior game is required.

What has Kojima revealed about OD?

Kojima Productions announced OD with Xbox Game Studios on December 7, 2023. The official announcement frames it around “testing your fear threshold” and “what it means to OD on fear,” while describing an effort to blur the boundaries between gaming and film. It named Hideo Kojima and filmmaker Jordan Peele among the storytellers, with Sophia Lillis, Hunter Schafer, and Udo Kier as leads at the time of announcement. Those details establish the project’s announced premise, not a connection to an earlier game. Read the Kojima Productions announcement.

In an interview reported by Windows Central on June 23, 2026, Kojima called OD “a new game system” and said it is a single-player game that he wanted to make as scary as possible. He also said he had the concept while working on Death Stranding. That is a detail about when the idea arose; it does not establish that OD continues Death Stranding‘s story or that players need to know it. The report did not disclose the exact system or gameplay. Read Windows Central’s report.

Is OD connected to Metal Gear or Death Stranding?

The public information covered here does not confirm whether OD includes story links, callbacks, or continuity with Metal Gear, Death Stranding, or another Kojima game. Kojima’s reported comment about conceiving OD while working on Death Stranding is not evidence of a narrative connection. The official announcement and later coverage do not name a previous game as required preparation.

Should you play an earlier Kojima game anyway?

Only if you want to explore Kojima’s other work. You might choose based on the kind of game or story you feel like playing, but no cited source establishes any one earlier title as especially useful preparation for OD. Treat any such play as optional, not homework.

When will OD release?

OD was still in development in GamesRadar+’s 2026 coverage. A report on Kojima’s Tokyo Game Show update said performance capture and ADR recording had resumed, production was proceeding on schedule, and the project was taking shape through experimentation; it gave no release window. Read the Tokyo Game Show update report. A separate GamesRadar+ report on Kojima’s Koji10 radio show quoted him saying, “this doesn’t mean we haven’t made the game. I want to keep quiet and release it.” Read the Koji10 report.

Neither report establishes a story connection to Kojima’s earlier games. Until the project is described in more detail, there is no confirmed prior-game requirement to plan around.
