No: ReShade is not a general substitute for a game’s DLSS or FSR upscaler. ReShade injects post-processing effects into a game’s rendering pipeline; DLSS Super Resolution and supported versions of AMD FSR are game-integrated reconstruction paths that can use lower-resolution rendering to produce a higher-resolution output. A ReShade shader may sharpen or otherwise alter an image, but that alone does not make it equivalent to temporal upscaling.
What each option actually does
| Path | What it does | What to record in a comparison |
|---|---|---|
| Native resolution | The game renders at the display output resolution. Antialiasing may still be enabled, so native does not mean unprocessed. | Output and render resolution, antialiasing mode, GPU, game build, and scene. |
| DLSS Super Resolution | NVIDIA describes it as reconstructing higher-resolution frames from lower-resolution input using multiple images, motion data, and feedback from prior frames. | DLSS mode and version, game, GPU, and output resolution. |
| DLAA | NVIDIA’s AI anti-aliasing mode constructs an image at native resolution; it is not an upscaling mode. | Whether DLAA is enabled and the output/render resolution. |
| AMD FSR | A version-dependent family: AMD documents spatial FSR 1, temporal FSR 2/3, and current ML-based features with differing support. | FSR generation and mode, game, GPU, and output resolution. |
| ReShade effects | Post-processing injected into the graphics pipeline. The exact effects depend on the shader or add-on. | ReShade version, exact shader or add-on, graphics API, and render/output resolution. |
| Radeon Super Resolution (RSR) | AMD driver-level spatial upscaling for supported configurations. | GPU, driver, game display mode, and input/output resolution. |
Why a ReShade sharpening shader is not DLSS or FSR
ReShade describes itself as a generic post-processing injector for games and video software. Its documented effects include antialiasing, ambient occlusion, depth of field, and color correction, and it can access frame color and depth. It supports Direct3D 9, 10, 11, 12, OpenGL, and Vulkan. That flexibility does not mean a ReShade effect has the motion information and frame-to-frame reconstruction pipeline used by temporal upscalers. See the ReShade project documentation.
A sharpening filter works on an image that has already been rendered; sharpening may make edges look crisper, but it does not by itself recover temporal detail or prevent artifacts such as flicker and instability in motion. AMD describes FidelityFX Contrast Adaptive Sharpening (CAS) as sharpening, optionally combined with upscaling to restore detail after TAA. Calling a CAS-based ReShade shader “FSR” or “DLSS equivalent” requires evidence about its actual algorithm and pipeline, not just a similar-looking result in a still image. See AMD’s CAS documentation.
ReShade’s add-on API was introduced in version 5.0, but add-ons should be assessed individually rather than assumed to behave like ordinary shaders. ReShade 6.8.0 was released August 2, 2026, according to the project’s official site.

How DLSS, FSR, and native resolution differ in practice
DLSS Super Resolution
NVIDIA’s developer documentation says DLSS Super Resolution uses AI to output higher-resolution frames from lower-resolution input. Its use of multiple lower-resolution images, motion data, and feedback from previous frames makes it a temporal reconstruction method, not simply a post-process applied to one finished frame. Availability depends on the game and compatible hardware. See NVIDIA’s DLSS documentation.
AMD FSR
FSR is not one fixed method or compatibility level. AMD’s current documentation lists FSR Upscaling 4.1 and other Redstone features, while its compatibility information varies by feature and GPU generation. FSR requires developer integration in supported games, so comparisons should name the FSR generation and mode rather than use “FSR” as if every game implements the same path. AMD currently lists FSR Upscaling 4.1 for Radeon RX 7000-series graphics and above, and FSR 3 upscaling for Radeon RX 590 and above; these are vendor compatibility claims, not guarantees for every game. See AMD’s current FSR page and its FSR compatibility information.

For FSR 1 specifically, AMD documents four scaling modes: Ultra Quality at 77% of output resolution per dimension, Quality at 67%, Balanced at 59%, and Performance at 50%. Those figures describe FSR 1 and should not be carried over to later versions as universal settings. See AMD GPUOpen’s FSR 1 documentation.
Native resolution and DLAA
Native rendering is a useful baseline, not an automatic guarantee of the best image or performance. Record the antialiasing setting as well as the resolution: a game at native output resolution may still use TAA, DLAA, or another native-AA mode. NVIDIA describes DLAA as AI anti-aliasing at native resolution, distinct from DLSS Super Resolution’s upscaling. The exact setting matters when judging differences in edge quality or frame rate.

How to make a fair comparison
Compare methods in the same game and scene on the same machine. A still frame can reveal sharpness, but it will not show whether fine detail shimmers, trails, or breaks up while the camera or objects move. Record the details that determine what the result means:
- GPU, driver, game build, and graphics API.
- Display output resolution and, where applicable, internal render resolution.
- Upscaler name, version, and quality mode; for ReShade, the exact shader or add-on and its settings.
- Antialiasing mode, graphics settings, and the same scene or camera movement.
- Frame rate alongside image quality, and whether any visible difference persists during motion.
Judge temporal stability and fine detail in motion as well as frame rate and GPU cost. Also account for game and hardware support, and the practical risk or difficulty of enabling each method. Vendor documentation establishes how vendors describe their own features, but it does not establish a universal image-quality winner. No controlled head-to-head result comparing ReShade-based upscaling, current DLSS, current FSR, and native rendering is established here.

When to use integrated FSR instead of RSR
AMD says that when a game supports built-in FSR, it recommends using that game-integrated option over Radeon Super Resolution because game-specific optimizations may improve upscaling results. RSR is a driver-level fallback for compatible configurations and games without integrated upscaling technology. See AMD’s Radeon Super Resolution configuration guidance.

If the game offers DLSS or FSR and you want an upscaler, start with the game’s integrated option and compare its available modes with native rendering in motion. Use ReShade for the post-processing effects it actually provides, such as sharpening or color adjustments, rather than treating it as a universal DLSS replacement. Keep DLAA distinct from upscaling, and name the FSR version when comparing results.
