The original Nintendo Switch Pro Controller works with Nintendo Switch 2. To pair it wirelessly, open Controllers > Change Grip and Order from the Switch 2 HOME Menu, then hold the controller’s SYNC button for at least one second. The console must be powered on; pairing is not available while it is asleep. Nintendo confirms compatibility and provides these pairing instructions.
Pair the Pro Controller wirelessly
- Turn on the Switch 2. It cannot pair controllers while in sleep mode.
- From the HOME Menu, select Controllers, then Change Grip and Order.
- While that screen is open, press and hold the Pro Controller’s SYNC button for at least one second.
- When pairing succeeds, the player LED for the assigned controller number stays lit.
Nintendo’s instructions are for the original Nintendo Switch Pro Controller. Its model number is HAC-013. See Nintendo’s pairing guide.
Connect it through the dock instead
If you prefer a wired setup, place the Switch 2 console in its dock and connect the Pro Controller to the dock with the included HAC-010 USB cable. Nintendo documents this as an alternate way to connect the controller; the USB connection also charges it. If the cable is missing or damaged, use a replacement only if its compatibility with the controller is verified. Nintendo’s instructions specify the included cable.
Troubleshoot pairing problems
Try these checks in order if the controller does not connect:

- Wake the console and retry wirelessly. Pairing cannot happen while Switch 2 is asleep; use the HOME Menu steps above.
- Update the console. Nintendo recommends installing the latest system update.
- Check the controller model. The original Pro Controller is HAC-013. For a third-party controller, Nintendo directs users to its manufacturer for support.
- Restart the console and try pairing again.
- If you tried USB, change the dock port or cable. If USB pairing fails, Nintendo recommends retrying wirelessly.
- Check the player LEDs. If they briefly light in sequence and then turn off, Nintendo’s button guidance says to pair the controller with the console. If no player LEDs light, the controller may be out of power.
Follow Nintendo’s Pro Controller pairing troubleshooting and button troubleshooting if the problem continues. Compatibility can vary by software and controller features, so Nintendo’s general compatibility guidance does not guarantee every game or feature will work with the controller.

Nintendo’s Pro Controller FAQ says up to eight wireless controllers can connect, but the actual number varies with controller type and the features in use. This is a general limit, not a guarantee that eight Pro Controllers will be usable in every game or setup. Read Nintendo’s Pro Controller FAQ.
