How to Fix PS5 Pro Games That Look Blurry or Run Poorly

Start by separating a game-specific graphics problem from a console or HDMI signal issue, then compare modes and check the settings that match the symptom.

If one PS5 Pro game looks soft or runs unevenly, start with that game’s own graphics modes and update notes. If the PS5 menus and several games also look wrong, check the console’s video-output signal and the HDMI path to your display. There is no single setting that fixes every title: graphics modes and enhancements are game-dependent.

First, work out whether the problem is one game or the whole display

Check whether the PS5 menus, multiple games, and other video sources look or behave badly. A symptom limited to one game makes its graphics options and current updates the most relevant place to start. Problems across menus or several games point instead toward the console’s output settings, HDMI connection, or display.

Sony documents game graphics presets separately from system video-output controls. Not every game offers Performance and Resolution modes, and titles do not all use the same labels, rendering methods, or frame-rate targets.

Why does one PS5 Pro game look blurry or run poorly?

Compare the game’s available graphics modes

If the game offers Performance and Resolution modes, compare them in its graphics or display settings. Sony describes Performance Mode as favoring smoother motion and Resolution Mode as favoring higher graphic quality. Try Performance first for choppy motion, or Resolution first when image detail is the concern; the actual trade-offs depend on the game, so treat this as a comparison rather than a guaranteed fix. Sony’s guide to PS5 game presets notes that presets apply only to games that support them.

PlayStation 5 Pro with 2TB SSD Storage, Console Only - PS5 Pro Gaming System, White (Renewed)
  • Ray Tracing - Immerse yourself in worlds with a new level of realism as rays of light are individually simulated, creating true-to-life shadows and reflections in supported PS5 games.
  • Faster Loading - Fast-travel across the map and get back into the game almost instantly with the PlayStation 5 console’s ultra-high-speed SSD and fast load times.
  • Stunning Visuals - Experience the vast world in stunning 4K and HDR at 120 FPS (with a 4K and HDR compatible TV or display)
  • Breathtaking Immersion - Discover a deeper gaming experience with support for haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, and 3D Audio technology.
  • Backwards Compatibility - Play over 4,000 PS4 games on PS5. Enjoy faster and smoother frame rates in some of the PS4 console's greatest games.

Check that game’s update and support notes

If the issue is confined to one title, install its available updates and consult the publisher’s current support notes. Without a specific game and version, there is no reliable way to identify its particular rendering mode, patch status, or known performance issue.

How do I make PS5 Pro games look sharper across the system?

Verify the console’s video-output signal

  1. Open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output.
  2. Check Current Video Output Signal and the selected Resolution. Sony says the console detects the connected TV’s capabilities and automatically selects the best available resolution when Resolution is set to Automatic. The reported output should make sense for the display and HDMI connection in use. Sony’s resolution guide explains the available signal checks.
  3. Review VRR, 120 Hz Output, HDR, and Video Transfer Rate if they relate to the symptom. A 4K/120 Hz signal requires compatible support from the console, game, display, HDMI port, and connection path; enabling a setting cannot add a mode the display does not support.

Use output-setting changes only for the symptom they address

  • 4K flicker: Sony says setting Video Transfer Rate to -1 or -2 may improve picture quality by limiting output. This is a targeted flicker test, not a general sharpness upgrade.
  • Video problems with 120 Hz: turn off 120 Hz Output as a test, as Sony advises when that mode causes problems on a monitor or other display.
  • Unexpected behavior with VRR: if VRR is being applied to unsupported games, Sony advises turning the setting off.

Check the HDMI cable, port, and display when the signal is unstable

For missing, flickering, or unexpectedly limited output, check the physical connection before changing game settings:

  • Reseat both ends of the HDMI cable and try a suitable HDMI port on the TV or monitor.
  • Connect the PS5 Pro directly to the display while troubleshooting, temporarily removing receivers, splitters, or capture devices from the path.
  • Check for display firmware updates and any TV setting required for high-resolution or high-refresh-rate signals.
  • Use the cable supplied with the PS5, or a suitable Ultra High Speed HDMI cable for 4K/120 Hz, if the existing cable is damaged or unsuitable. Sony’s 4K resolution guidance and picture and sound troubleshooting cover these checks.

A cable change addresses a suspect signal path; it does not improve a game’s internal resolution, image reconstruction, or frame rate when the existing connection is already working correctly.

Should you change PS5 Pro image-enhancement settings?

For compatible PS5 games: test Enhance PSSR Image Quality

PS5 Pro’s Enhance PSSR Image Quality setting is on by default and applies only to certain PSSR-compatible games. Find it under Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output; if image behavior is unexpected in a compatible game, try turning it off and compare. It is not a universal blur control. Sony’s video-output guide describes the setting and its limited compatibility.

For PS4 games: distinguish the separate image-quality option

Enhance Image Quality for PS4 Games is a separate PS5 Pro option for PS4 titles, not PS5-native games. Sony says it is for the CFI-7000 model group and requires a display supporting 2160p (4K) or 1440p at 60 Hz. If gameplay behaves unexpectedly with it enabled, Sony advises turning it off. See Sony’s PS4 game image-quality guidance and the PS5 video-output guide.

What to try when the PS5 Pro still performs poorly

For persistent system-level performance drops or feature problems, Sony lists Clear System Software Cache as a Safe Mode troubleshooting option. Rebuild Database scans the drive and creates a new content database; Sony describes it as useful for system-feature issues or stale game icons. Neither is documented as a guaranteed fix for a particular game’s graphics quality.

To enter Safe Mode, turn the console off, then press and hold the power button again; release it after the second beep. Connect the controller with a USB cable and press the PS button, then choose the relevant cache or database option. Read each on-screen warning carefully: some Safe Mode options erase data, and reset or reinstall choices are destructive. Do not use those as routine picture-quality steps. Sony’s Safe Mode guide explains the options.

If only one game remains blurry or unstable after its settings and updates are checked, consult that game’s publisher rather than assuming the console has a universal graphics fault. For persistent console or output problems, use Sony’s PS5 Pro troubleshooting guidance or PlayStation Repairs. Sony lists overheating, 8K image, flicker, and TV connection as separate issue categories on that support page.
