To collect Steam reviews reliably, use Steam’s current IUserReviewsService/GetAppReviews endpoint, pass its settings inside input_json, and carry each returned cursor into the next request. For a traversal that can end, choose the Recent or Updated filter and stop when the response’s reviews array is empty. A Helpful query is ranked and can expand its time window, so it is not a dependable way to export every matching review.
Use the current Steam reviews endpoint
Steam documents https://api.steampowered.com/IUserReviewsService/GetAppReviews/v1/ as the service for getting public app reviews. Its description is: “Gets a page of public reviews for an app.” The service replaces the older store.steampowered.com/appreviews/<appid>?json=1 format. In the current service, parameters are supplied together in input_json; values for filter, review_type, and purchase_type are enums. The language parameter is languages, not the older singular form.
Check the HTTP status for success or failure. The current response does not include a success field. Steam documents HTTP 429 as the response for rate-limited calls, but its reference does not give a numeric threshold.
How do I get all Steam reviews?
“All” needs a defined scope: all reviews matching your language, purchase-source, sentiment, date, and other filters. Set those options deliberately, then page through a chronological view. Steam’s Recent and Updated filters eventually return an empty review list, which gives the traversal a natural stopping condition.

- Choose the app and collection scope. Set the app ID and the filters you intend to analyze. Use
num_per_pageup to 100; if omitted, it defaults to 20. - Start at the first page. Omit
cursoror set it to*. ChooseRecentto order by newest-created reviews orUpdatedto order by most recently updated. - Request and validate the page. Check the HTTP status before processing the response. Handle HTTP 429 as rate limiting rather than treating it as an empty result.
- Process reviews and retain the cursor. Save the page’s
reviewsand pass the returnedcursorin the next request. Cursor values can contain characters that must be URL-encoded when constructing a URL. - Continue until the review list is empty. Keep the selected filters and language settings with the collected records so another person can interpret what the export includes.
This approach traverses the reviews returned under the chosen settings; it does not mean every review Steam has ever received regardless of those settings. A failed or rate-limited request is a collection problem to handle separately, not evidence that the traversal is complete.
Choose a filter that matches the collection goal
The filter setting controls ordering and affects whether paging behaves like a complete chronological traversal. Review population is controlled separately by review_type and purchase_type.

Helpful results are a ranked view, not a chronological export. By default, Steam can widen day_range when the selected window contains no results, so another page may still return reviews. Use Recent or Updated when the goal is to keep paging until there are no matching reviews.
Set language scope and interpret score labels correctly
languages selects which review languages the endpoint returns. Steam’s API reference documents an empty list as English and all as every language; otherwise provide Steam API language codes. Each review also carries its own language value. Keep the language selection in the dataset description: an English-only export is not equivalent to one covering all languages.

display_language is separate. It controls the language of review_score_desc and defaults to English; it does not select which reviews are returned. Nor should either setting be confused with Steam’s review-score calculation. Steam Support explains that the score counts Steam-purchased reviews (or all reviews for apps that do not require purchase), excludes reviews from periods Steam classifies as off-topic by default, and uses reviews in a player’s language when enough are available; otherwise it calculates the score across all languages. These score rules describe Steam’s displayed score, not a substitute for specifying the API query’s languages and purchase_type parameters.
Make other inclusion rules explicit
Several optional settings can materially change the result set. Treat them as part of the dataset definition rather than incidental request details.

use_review_qualityapplies only toHelpful. Steam documents low-quality ranking and additional result restrictions when quality ranking is disabled; if using this option, record its value alongside the other Helpful settings.
For a reproducible export or analysis, retain the exact request settings—including filter, sentiment, purchase source, language, date or playtime constraints, and off-topic and quality settings—alongside the returned data.

The response includes a cursor for the next page, total_matching, and day_range_used for Helpful queries. Do not assume every response contains the same aggregate fields: query_summary score fields are returned only on the first page and only when review_type is All.

Each review includes a review ID, author data, text and language, created and updated timestamps, the positive-or-negative recommendation flag, vote information, purchase and free indicators, playtime fields, and other attributes. Preserve the fields relevant to your analysis, and do not infer missing first-page summary values from later pages.
Account for caching and rate limits
The method can be called without an API key. Steam says anonymous responses may be cached for up to 10 minutes; calls without a key associated with the app share a lower rate limit. When a request receives HTTP 429, treat it as rate-limited and avoid counting that response as a completed page. The official reference does not state a numeric rate threshold, so there is no documented request-per-minute figure to rely on.
