There is no single best Fortress Saga hero for every activity. Choose for the mode’s job—then narrow the options to heroes you own and can build. Use a current general tier list to shortlist investments, not as a universal lineup: a hero’s value can shift between waves, bosses, Arena, Guild War, farming, and tower content.
Start with the mode, not the tier list
Ask what the activity rewards and what your team needs to do. Wave and tower encounters can favor heroes suited to repeated groups of enemies; boss fights call for a setup that can focus on the target; competitive modes make a mode-specific lineup more relevant than a broad PvE ranking. Farming is its own case, too: a hero who ranks well in combat modes may not be the most useful choice there.
This distinction is visible even in an older mode-by-mode table: AllClash’s December 16, 2023 guide ranked Zelos highly for waves, bosses, Arena, and towers but poorly for farming, while Violet was rated well for waves, bosses, farming, and towers but poorly for Arena. Those placements are dated and should not be treated as current recommendations; they illustrate why one overall rank cannot answer every mode question. See the AllClash mode table.
Use current tier lists as a shortlist
Pocket Gamer’s broad hero tier list was updated September 16, 2026, and labels its snapshot version 2.1.02, with Anubis listed as the latest addition at that time. Its S+ group includes Anubis, Yuyan, Ryo, Beatrice, Violet, Malleus, Ruingaladh, Styria, Iris, Ungula, Mael, Mephisto, Luna, Iblis, Milena, Kahula, Laios, Marcille, Chilchuck, Tails, and Gildong. This is an editorial guide that adapts material based on the Japanese server to the global server—not an official ranking or a controlled comparison of performance. Do not treat the S+ label as an instruction to build a hero you do not have. The guide itself notes that players may lack access to the highest-ranked heroes early and may need to upgrade lower-rarity options. A strong usable hero with the investment you can support is more practical than a nominally top-ranked pick left underdeveloped.
Match a hero’s job to the team’s need
Look at what a hero’s skills contribute, not just the tier label. Pocket Gamer’s descriptions offer examples of role-based fit: Violet summons Shadow Soldiers that benefit from additional stats; Malleus is described as effective against clusters and able to buff Machina allies; and Styria is described as a healer/support who can heal and shield allies and passively raise team HP. These descriptions help identify possible jobs, but they are guide descriptions rather than firsthand comparative test results.
Rank #2
- The exciting “Push your luck” Dice Game set in a dungeon full of monsters and treasure!
- From the ever popular Dice Game collection from Mantic Games
- Need more bodies or scaling from stats? Consider whether a summoner such as Violet fits the team and whether you can support the additional stats her summoned units benefit from.
- Facing clustered enemies? Malleus is one example the guide associates with effectiveness against groups; his Machina buff also makes the rest of your team relevant to the choice.
- Need team durability? Styria’s described healing, shielding, and passive team HP support may suit a lineup that needs to survive longer.
Choose by game mode
Waves
Prioritize a lineup that can handle repeated enemy groups. Summoning, area pressure, and survival support are useful role questions to investigate, but the available current evidence does not establish a definitive wave ranking. Do not carry forward the exact wave placements in the 2023 AllClash table as if they were current.
Bosses
Think about sustained focus on a single target and whether your team can stay alive long enough to deal damage. A broad tier list can help surface candidates, but the sources here do not provide a current, verified boss-specific ranking or comparative damage figures.

Arena
Arena recommendations should be treated as build-dependent examples, not a team to copy without checking your account. Kamigame’s Japanese-language Arena guide, updated August 18, 2026, gives an eight-hero example: Kubera, Mael, Tien, Kahula, Styria, Anubis, Kaira, and Malleus. It also specifies upgrade thresholds and equipment/stat recommendations, so roster access and the ability to meet those prerequisites matter. Consult Kamigame’s Arena lineup guide.
Guild War
For Guild War, a mode-specific ranking is more pertinent than assuming the broad tier list transfers unchanged. Kamigame’s Japanese-language ranking, updated September 16, 2026, places Violet, Kubera, Mael, Iris, Yaksha, Luca, and Tien in its SS tier. It is regional editorial guidance; global players should use it as a reference rather than proof of a universally optimal lineup. See Kamigame’s Guild War ranking.
Rank #4
- Games Workshop - Warhammer 40,000 - Leagues of Votann: Hekaton Land Fortress
- These miniatures are supplied unpainted and require assembly
- A devastating Heavy Support transport for your Leagues of Votann army
- Choose from an arsenal of heavy weapons and missile warheads
- Annihilate the toughest targets and deliver hard-hitting warriors to the battle
Farming
Do not assume that a hero who excels in combat or competitive modes is equally useful for farming. The older AllClash table illustrates that rankings can diverge by activity, but its 2023 placements are too dated to recommend current farming picks. The evidence available here does not establish a current farming tier list.
Tower-type content
Treat tower content as a separate matchup rather than defaulting to a wave or boss lineup. The older AllClash table includes tower ratings, but its age makes those placements unsuitable as current recommendations. Build around the challenge you are facing and the roles your available heroes can fill.

Adapt recommendations to your account
- Confirm access. Start with heroes you actually own; a guide’s top pick cannot help if it is unavailable to your account.
- Check investment requirements. For any mode-specific lineup, compare your heroes’ upgrades with the guide’s stated thresholds before copying its recommendation.
- Match roles to the encounter. Decide whether your roster needs damage, summoning, healing, shields, crowd control, or buffs, then select heroes whose described skills fill those jobs.
- Account for team synergy. A buff that benefits Machina allies, for example, is only valuable in context of the allies you plan to field.
- Revisit dated advice. Rankings are snapshots. The broad list cited here is tied to version 2.1.02 and a September 2026 update; older mode placements should not be presented as current.
How much confidence to place in rankings
The rankings cited here are third-party editorial guides. Pocket Gamer describes its list as adapted from Japanese-server material for the global server, while the latest mode-specific examples cited here come from Japanese-language Kamigame guides. They do not establish one globally optimal lineup across patches, regions, account progress, and modes, and they do not provide controlled win-rate or damage comparisons. Use them to generate candidates, then make the final choice from your mode, roster, upgrades, and build options.
