Steam Next Fest ran from February 23 through March 2, 2026, giving players a chance to try demos, talk with developers, watch streams and discover upcoming games. The festival has ended, so whether any demo below is still downloadable depends on its current Steam page. These ten picks span very different play styles; “coolest” is an editorial shortlist, not an official ranking.

Which demos suit your taste?
For story, exploration and tactical choices
Zero Parades: For Dead Spies is the pick for players drawn to espionage role-playing. Coverage described two complete quests alongside side activities and open exploration in Portofiro, with three character archetypes to shape the experience. The cited report said its demo was available through March 16, three weeks later than the festival’s March 2 close; that historical window does not establish current availability.
Echo Generation 2 shifts the focus to science-fiction exploration and turn-based battles. Players configure card decks for combat, while moving through the world in third person. Meristation’s February 23 preview put the demo at roughly an hour and cautioned that it represented only part of the full game.
For platforming or measured swordplay
The Eternal Life of Goldman is a hand-drawn 2D platform adventure from THQ Nordic. Its festival demo covered the opening section and was estimated at around 90 minutes, with actual time depending on how someone plays. The publisher recommends a controller, a useful consideration for a platformer, though it is not a claim that keyboard play is impossible.
#1 Best Overall
- Compatible with Windows and Android.
- 1000Hz Polling Rate (for 2.4G and wired connection)
- Hall Effect joysticks and Hall triggers. Wear-resistant metal joystick rings.
- Extra R4/L4 bumpers. Custom button mapping without using software. Turbo function.
- Refined bumpers and D-pad. Light but tactile.
1348 Ex Voto offers a more deliberate kind of action. Meristation’s hands-on report described medieval sword fights built around stances, parries and dodges, with encounters against small groups of enemies. Its demo lasted roughly 30 minutes according to that report, making it a compact option if you want to test combat rather than settle into a long preview.
For hunting or a pirate adventure
Way of the Hunter 2 is THQ Nordic’s open-world hunting game set in the Canadian wilderness. The publisher said it was coming to Steam Early Access; that is a release-plan description, not confirmation of its present status. It is the shortlist’s most simulation-oriented choice.
Rank #2

Pumuckl and the Crown of the Pirate King is a story-driven pirate adventure described by THQ Nordic as suitable for all ages. The practical caveat is language: the publisher listed German as the only available language. That makes the game a better fit for German-speaking players than for anyone who needs another language.
For a cozy, family-oriented session
Find Your Words is a relaxed camp adventure in which icon stickers provide an in-game way for characters to communicate. Meristation characterized it as family-friendly and reported a demo of about half an hour. The sticker system is a game mechanic; it should not be treated as a substitute for real-world communication support.
Rank #3

It introduces powerful new features such as gyro settings, stick curve adjustments, and button-to-mouse mapping, giving you deeper customization and more control than ever before.
For comedy, sports and run-based action
Pro Jank Footy is the arcade-sports option, mixing comedy with ability-card power-ups and solo or multiplayer play. Frosty Games Fest included it among Australian/New Zealand regional picks. That listing supplies a useful genre and mode snapshot, rather than a broad hands-on verdict.
The Dungeon Experience leans into an unusual comic premise: a mudcrab on a quest for “financial freedom.” Frosty Games Fest listed it as a first-person comedy adventure, making it the shortlist’s tonal outlier for players who want a knowingly silly setup.
Rank #4
- Multi-Platform PC Gaming Controller: Working with Switch, PC, Android, and iOS devices via Bluetooth, wired, and wireless dongle connections.
- Hall Effect Joysticks: Delivering enhanced recentering performance for smoother control and superior anti-drift capability. Plus, with anti-friction rings.
- 2-Way Trigger Lock: With trigger stops, gamers can toggle between short and long pull positions. Additionally, gamers can activate hair trigger mode by pressing M+LT/RT (triggers must be in the long pull position).
- 1000Hz Polling Rate: This ensures that your inputs are registered almost instantaneously, minimizing lag and maximizing your performance during competitive play.
- Mechanical Circular D-pad: Designed for quick reactions and accuracy in every direction, this D-pad elevates your gaming experience with superior responsiveness.
Box Knight offers a different kind of punchy diversion: Frosty Games Fest described it as a comic roguelike beat ’em up with action-RPG elements. It is the clearest choice here for someone looking for run-based action rather than exploration or a story-led demo.

- The festival itself ended March 2, 2026. Do not assume a Next Fest demo remains available; check each game’s current Steam page for a playable demo or other current access information.
- The reported Zero Parades demo period extended to March 16, 2026, but that date is also in the past and does not establish availability now.
- Demo-duration estimates are reported previews, not guarantees of how long every player will take. The figures available for Echo Generation 2, The Eternal Life of Goldman, 1348 Ex Voto and Find Your Words are roughly 60, 90, 30 and 30 minutes respectively.
- Use a controller if that suits you, especially for The Eternal Life of Goldman, whose publisher explicitly recommended one. The cited information does not establish that every demo requires a controller.
- If language matters, THQ Nordic’s event announcement listed German as the only language for Pumuckl and the Crown of the Pirate King.
How to read this shortlist
The ten picks cover narrative RPG, tactical card combat, platforming, hunting, sword fighting, cozy play, arcade sports, comedy and roguelike action. The detailed descriptions for several come from previews or the publisher’s announcement; the final three are regional curation picks from Frosty Games Fest. These sources support a varied set of recommendations, not a measured ranking of the festival’s most popular or objectively best demos. No authoritative total count of February 2026 demos is established by the cited coverage.
