The twelve titles below come from a list published July 12, 2023, and updated January 4, 2024; they are not a freshly verified ranking. “Free” can mean a free-to-play game, a free multiplayer mode, or a limited free trial, and paid expansions or optional purchases may still apply.
What to know before choosing a free game for ROG Ally
The ROG Ally runs Windows 11, so it can use multiple PC game launchers. ASUS lists Steam, Xbox Game Pass, Epic Games Store, and GOG on its product page; its support FAQ also names Ubisoft Connect and EA App. Launcher availability does not guarantee that every game runs smoothly or has uncomplicated handheld-controller support. Check the current store listing and in-game control options before downloading.
This is a historical selection, not a current top-twelve ranking. The original list appeared in January 2024, and some entries need updated names or clearer distinctions between free access and paid content. Where current terms were not established by the available official pages, the notes below avoid promising that the game is currently free.
12 games from the 2024 list
1. Apex Legends
A competitive hero shooter and battle royale. The original article included it, but the linked EA page did not provide usable access details here. Check the live EA or store listing for current availability, costs, and controller support.
#1 Best Overall

- [Game-ready storage and fast memory]: Store your full library and multitask seamlessly with 512GB SSD and 16GB of LPDDR5 6400MHz RAM. The ROG Xbox Ally makes playing any game in the palm of your hand possible.
2. Call of Duty: Warzone
The 2024 list called it Warzone 2.0; Activision’s current page uses Warzone and describes it as free-to-play. That covers entry to the game, not every optional item or premium offering promoted on the page.
3. Counter-Strike 2
The old entry, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, has been superseded by Counter-Strike 2. Steam describes CS2 as a free upgrade to CS:GO and labels it Free To Play on its store page. It is a competitive tactical shooter; check its controller options and settings on the Ally before settling in.
4. Destiny 2
The historical entry was “Destiny 2: Lightfall,” which combines the base-game name with a paid expansion title. Bungie’s page displayed a “Play for Free” option, but the available information did not clarify expansion entitlements. Treat the base game and Lightfall as separate products, and confirm which content is included on the current store page before downloading.
5. Fall Guys
A social party game built around obstacle-course rounds. Its official site offers a download and posts dated updates, but check the current store listing for the platform and access terms that apply to you.

These are genre groupings, not performance ratings. For any title, verify the current price or trial terms in its store, then check whether its control scheme suits handheld play. No blanket frame-rate promise applies: ASUS’s published figures are manufacturer results for specified models, settings, and power conditions, and ASUS cautions that performance varies by configuration and can change as drivers mature. The figures are not independent tests of every game on every Ally configuration.
Storage: installing a larger library
If you want to keep several large games installed, microSD expansion is an option. ASUS says the original ROG Ally has a UHS-II microSD slot and that games can be installed to microSD storage; see ASUS’s product specifications and support FAQ. Check the card’s capacity and speed claims for your needs rather than assuming a particular model is fastest or universally compatible.
