For a first playthrough, use release order: it follows the series as players encountered it and avoids jumping ahead to later installments. Story order is different: it is a community reconstruction, and the evidence available here does not establish a complete, developer-issued timeline. The release dates verified here are for three key games, not every FNAF release.
FNAF games in release order
Release order means when a game first became available to play, not when its events supposedly happen in the fiction. The table gives the three dates confirmed by the official storefront listings cited below. It is not a complete franchise release list.

These dates come from the respective Steam listings, with PlayStation also confirming the Security Breach date and platforms. The source material does not verify exact release dates for every other game, DLC, mobile title, spin-off, or promotional release, so they are not added here as if this were a complete list.
What order should you play the FNAF games?
Play in release order if you are new to the series. That lets you encounter the games in the order they were made available, rather than relying on hindsight to place events in a complicated fictional timeline. For the three source-verified entries above, that means Five Nights at Freddy’s, then Help Wanted, then Security Breach. This is an example, not a full recommended franchise sequence.

Before treating any longer list as “all FNAF games,” decide what it includes. A core-game list, a list of every standalone spin-off, and a list that also counts DLC and mobile or promotional releases are different scopes. Guides may separate spin-offs and DLC from mainline games; check the category labels rather than assuming every entry is a main story chapter.
What is the FNAF story order?
A proposed story order sorts games by the inferred chronology of their fictional events. It is not the same as release order, and the chronology guide identified here describes its sequence as community consensus while flagging uncertain placements. That makes it a theory-based guide, not proof of a canon timeline.
