There is no official, universal eight-item starter loadout for The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered. What is useful depends on your skills, difficulty, and whether you rely on weapons, magic, or stealth. For most new characters, prioritize a dependable way to heal, the tools your build actually uses, and a little flexibility for exploration—not every item on this list.

A flexible early-game checklist

Think of these as eight useful categories, not eight mandatory objects or quantities. Carry what supports your character and leave room for loot. Bethesda’s beginner advice is to explore at your own pace: Al Nanes, Design Director at Bethesda Game Studios, recommends straying from the path and talking to people, while Senior Producer Ricardo Mora advises players not to rush. Bethesda’s beginner guide frames exploration as part of the experience, not a checklist to complete.

  1. A reliable healing option. Health potions make a useful emergency reserve. If you have Restoration magic, which Bethesda describes as covering healing and fortifying, you may prefer to carry fewer potions and rely on spells when Magicka permits.
  2. Repair hammers, if you use equipment that needs upkeep. Armorer governs repairing weapons and armor, according to Bethesda Support’s leveling guide. The original PC manual also describes repair hammers, but it predates the remaster; exact remaster quantities, thresholds, and repair rules should not be assumed from that manual.
  3. Lockpicks, if you want to open locked containers. Most chests require them, though some do not. Failed pin placement can break a pick, with the risk increasing for better locks. Carry a few if you enjoy exploring locked containers, but you do not need to pick every chest.
  4. A primary weapon that fits your trained skill. Choose a weapon type that works with the character you are developing—Blade, Blunt, or Marksman are among the skills Bethesda lists—rather than chasing a supposedly best weapon that may not suit your build.
  5. A backup way to deal damage. A second weapon type can help if your main option is inconvenient. Magic-focused characters might instead use an offensive spell or summoned ally: Bethesda lists Destruction for offensive spells and Conjuration for summoned creatures and magical weapons. This option depends on your skills and available Magicka.
  6. Armor or a shield that suits your character. Heavy Armor and Light Armor are separate skills, while Block covers blocking with shields or weapons. Pick equipment that fits your training and tolerance for its weight; carrying multiple armor sets is not a universal advantage.
  7. A small amount of restorative or utility magic or consumables. Restoration can heal or fortify; Alteration includes effects such as water breathing and shield. A relevant spell or consumable can help with a route or encounter, but the right choice depends on your skills and plans.
  8. An optional light or exploration aid. A torch may suit a player who wants one, but it is not established as a mechanical requirement or an official remaster starter recommendation. Treat it as a preference, not essential gear.

These categories cover survival, upkeep, access, combat, and exploration. Bethesda also notes that enemies scale with character level and recommends developing a mix of combat, magic, and stealth skills. That is a reason to build a coherent character—not to grind unrelated skills while neglecting the abilities you rely on.

Will I need lockpicks to open a chest, and do they still break (a lot)?

For most locked chests, yes, you need a lockpick; some chests can be opened without one. Bethesda Support says a pick has a small chance to break when a pin placement fails, and that the chance increases with lock quality. The available guidance does not establish a universal break percentage, so “a lot” depends on the lock and your attempts rather than a fixed rate. Bethesda also says lockpicking improves as you level, while higher-level areas have harder chests. See Bethesda Support’s lockpicking guidance.

If you dislike the mechanic, Gameranx describes the Skeleton Key as an unbreakable lockpick obtained through a quest. It is a later alternative, not an item to count on at the start. You can also leave a locked container unopened rather than spending picks on every chest.

Which named weapons can you get early—and what do they cost you?

“Early” varies with how quickly you leave the opening areas and which quests you pursue. These examples come from Kevin Thielenhaus’s April 25, 2025 Gameranx guide to early weapons. They are options, not a universally best starter set; the guide’s claims are not a controlled, remaster-wide ranking.

Weapon How it fits Access, cost, or risk
Umbra Longsword A Blade option for a character suited to a longsword. Found in Vindasel, southwest of the Imperial City, without starting the associated quest. The guide describes the opponent as difficult and mentions a terrain-based strategy; this is a high-risk optional detour, not a default beginner recommendation.
Apotheosis Staff A staff option for a magic-using character. Sold by Rindir’s Staffs in the Imperial City Market District. The guide calls it powerful but advises saving gold; it is a purchase rather than a free pickup.
Chillrend A sword option for a character who can use it effectively. Associated with the “The Killing Field” side quest in Chorrol. The guide says both of Valus Odiil’s sons must survive to receive the reward.
Hatred’s Soul Bow A Marksman option for a character who uses bows. Requires access to an Oblivion Gate after the Kvatch main quest and further exploration, so it is early only if you advance that story route.
Goldbrand A sword reward for a player willing to pursue an involved optional quest. The guide says it requires a Daedric shrine quest and nine battles. That effort makes it a poor assumption for an opening-hours loadout.

Choose among these by weapon skill, access, and willingness to spend gold or take risks. A named weapon does not automatically make a good early choice if obtaining it diverts you into a fight or quest your character is not ready for.

What changes if you rely on magic rather than weapons?

Magic can replace some physical kit, but it does not remove the need to plan around resources. A character with Restoration can heal through spells instead of carrying as many healing potions; Conjuration can provide summoned creatures or magical weapons; Destruction offers offensive spells. Alteration’s water-breathing or shield effects can be useful when the route or situation calls for them. Bethesda’s descriptions of these skills are in its leveling guide.

The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion™ Remastered – Physical Deluxe Edition – Nintendo Switch 2
  • The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered modernises the 2006 Game of the Year with all new stunning visuals and refined gameplay.
  • Weapon-focused: prioritize a weapon that matches Blade, Blunt, or Marksman training, plus repair tools if you want to maintain equipment.
  • Magic-focused: decide which spells cover healing, offense, and utility, and carry potions as a reserve if you want a fallback when Magicka is unavailable.
  • Mixed or stealth-focused: keep the loadout selective. A second damage option can help, but every item should support the approach you actually use.

There is no need to duplicate every role with both a spell and a consumable. The right balance is the one that leaves you able to handle the encounters and exploration you choose without carrying tools your build rarely uses.

Why there is no single best starter inventory

Bethesda presents Oblivion Remastered as a modernization of the 2006 game, with its story expansions and additional downloadable content included; consult the official product page for current platform and edition information. The game’s breadth makes a flexible loadout more useful than a rigid shopping list: your skill choices, preferred style, and route determine what earns a place in your inventory.
