Minecraft’s End is a dark, starless purple void dotted with pale end-stone islands. At the center, tall obsidian spires and End crystals mark the dragon-fight arena; farther out, some islands grow chorus plants or hold purple End Cities, with ships sometimes appearing beside them.
What does the End look like in Minecraft?
Picture isolated islands of pale end stone suspended over empty space. The central island is the most recognizable landmark: it is the dragon’s arena, ringed by towering obsidian pillars topped with End crystals. Endermen roam the landscape.
The wider dimension feels sparse and otherworldly. Its purple darkness frames the islands rather than a conventional sky. Minecraft’s description of the End as an “eternal, starless night” captures the mood, though the exact colors and visual effects can vary by game version and rendering.
How does the central island differ from the outer islands?
| Area | What you may see | What distinguishes it |
|---|---|---|
| Central island | End stone, obsidian spires, End crystals, and the Ender Dragon | The dragon-fight area and its prominent pillars. |
| Outer islands | Scattered islands with varied terrain; some highlands have chorus forests and End Cities | More variation in vegetation and structures, but cities and forests are not guaranteed on every island. |
The outer islands form a spread of landforms, from small islands and barrens to midlands and highlands. Players reach them through an End gateway after defeating the dragon. Because islands are separated by the void, moving between them is part of the landscape’s defining challenge.

What do End Cities and chorus forests look like?
Chorus forests
In the End Highlands, chorus plants form large forests, adding branching vegetation to otherwise bare end-stone terrain.
End Cities
An End City is a tall, branching structure built largely from purple purpur blocks. Its multistorey towers stand out against the open void. Cities can contain shulkers, ender chests, and End rods. Some also have a ship near the top; not every city has one.

What should you watch for while exploring?
- Endermen: They roam the End, including around the central island.
- Shulkers: Found in End Cities, they can cause levitation. Losing control of your movement above a drop can turn a city encounter into a dangerous fall.
- The void: Gaps between islands are empty space, so crossing them calls for care.
Can the End look different by edition?
The central island, void, and outer islands are the core image supported by official descriptions. The precise outer-biome inventory is not identical across all editions: Minecraft Help labels some outer-island biomes as Java Edition only. So treat chorus forests and End Cities as possible outer-island landmarks, not features that every player will find on every island.
For official descriptions, see Minecraft Help’s biome list, Around the Block: End Highlands, Block of the Week: End Stone, and Building Blocks: End City.
