Animal Crossing: New Horizons may be the best entry for players who want to shape an island around their own ideas and enjoy a real-time routine. It is not an objective series-wide winner: anyone who prefers a more traditional town-and-village structure may favor New Leaf or an earlier game.
What makes New Horizons stand out?
New Horizons puts you in charge of developing an island over time. You can gather wildlife and materials, build facilities, paths and bridges, invite residents, and customize the landscape. That creative control is its clearest distinction from the smaller-village feel associated with earlier entries.
Nintendo describes the pace as flexible: “Life on the island may pass in real time, but you can be as active or laid back as you like.” In practice, the real-time structure suits players who enjoy checking in and gradually developing a place, while the breadth of customization gives them a long-running creative project. How does it compare with New Leaf and earlier games?
The key choice is not a simple feature count; it is the kind of Animal Crossing experience you want. Nintendo Life characterizes New Leaf as closer to the earlier formula, with a shopping area and a more compact village, while New Horizons gives players extensive island customization. That contrast is useful, but it is not a comprehensive ranking of every installment or mechanic. Nintendo Life’s series comparison

| What matters to you | Better fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Designing terrain and shaping a personal setting | New Horizons | Its island development and customization are central to play. |
| A more traditional town-and-village structure | New Leaf or an earlier entry | The comparison describes New Leaf as closer to the older formula, with a shopping area and smaller-village feel. |
| A measured, real-time routine | New Horizons, if that rhythm appeals | Island life passes in real time, with room to choose how actively to play. |
The available comparison does not establish which game has the best villager dialogue or community interactions. If those details matter most, this evidence cannot settle the choice; the better-supported distinction is the structure of the place you build and inhabit.
Does its popularity make it the best?
No. Nintendo reports New Horizons sales of 50.29 million units worldwide as of June 30, 2026. Nintendo’s consolidated software totals include downloads and bundled software. That figure establishes extraordinary reach, not that every player will prefer it to another entry. Nintendo’s worldwide software sales listing

The game also had an exceptional launch: Nintendo said it exceeded 13 million combined sell-through units in Japan, the United States and Europe during its first six weeks in 2020, quickly surpassing New Leaf’s lifetime sell-through at that point. This is a historical launch statistic, not a measure of comparative quality. Nintendo’s 2020 series sell-through presentation

This recommendation concerns Animal Crossing: New Horizons for Nintendo Switch. The game is also available on Switch 2; a Switch 2 upgrade is not required to play the Switch game. Before buying for a shared household, check the console arrangement: Nintendo UK says there is one island per Switch console, regardless of how many users or copies there are, and up to four island residents can play at once on one console. These are UK product-page terms, so check the current local product information for your region. Nintendo also notes that online modes require a paid Nintendo Switch Online membership. - Take in-game photos of your designs and add them to your portfolio. Show them to other characters and you may get more requests to create vacation homes. Share the photos with other players using the in-game Showroom in the Happy Home Network app and they can tour your personally-designed resort islands or go tour theirs for some relaxation and inspiration.
- Purchase the Animal Crossing: New Horizons – Happy Home Paradise DLC from Nintendo eShop, or download and play it as part of an active Nintendo Switch Online plus Expansion Pack membership at no extra cost.
Are the expansion and amiibo required?
No. The base game’s island-life loop does not require either. Happy Home Paradise is optional paid downloadable content focused on designing vacation homes at an archipelago resort; it is an expansion, not a separate physical game.
Compatible Animal Crossing amiibo cards and figures are optional physical collectibles. Depending on the specific item, they can invite selected characters to locations such as the campsite, The Roost, Photopia, Happy Home Paradise or the resort hotel; some amiibo also unlock themed items. Compatibility and effects vary, so check the exact card or figure before buying. Nintendo of America’s amiibo instructions
