Assassin’s Gambit is a weapon skill in Elden Ring that muffles your footsteps and reduces your visibility for a short time. It can help you move past enemies or approach a target, but it is not a guarantee that you will remain undetected. The skill also costs HP as well as FP, so check your weapon’s compatibility and requirements before relying on it.
What Assassin’s Gambit does
The community-maintained skill reference describes Assassin’s Gambit as muffling footsteps and reducing visibility for 30 seconds. It also describes a stronger near-invisibility effect at a certain range relative to opponents, but does not establish a precise distance. In PvP, it significantly reduces opponents’ lock-on range. These effects can make stealthier movement or an approach easier; they do not make you universally undetectable or guarantee a backstab.
Cost, requirements, and risk
The same reference lists the skill’s cost as 5 FP and 35 HP. That HP loss is a real tradeoff, particularly if you activate the skill shortly before a fight. It warns that using Assassin’s Gambit without sufficient FP or the required stats still inflicts the HP loss but does not grant the concealment effects.
Check your character’s requirements and the skill’s displayed cost before using it. Bandai Namco’s Version 1.12 notes say FP costs were added to the Ashes of War inventory display, making the in-game display a practical check: Version 1.12 patch notes.

Which weapons can use it?
The skill reference lists infusable small or medium straight swords and thrusting swords as compatible categories. Compatibility can depend on the particular weapon, so confirm it in the game’s Ashes of War menu rather than assuming every sword in those categories accepts the skill.
When is it useful?
- Passing enemies: Silenced footsteps and reduced visibility may help you move through an area with less chance of drawing attention, but the skill does not promise that enemies will fail to detect you.
- Approaching a target: Reduced visibility can support a stealthy approach. Treat it as an aid, not a guarantee of a critical hit or successful ambush.
- PvP: The reference says the effect significantly reduces opponent lock-on range. That may create room to reposition, but it does not remove all ways an opponent can detect or attack you.
If your goal is simply to remain hidden, weigh the HP cost and limited duration against the value of the approach. The gathered mechanics reference does not establish that Assassin’s Gambit replaces other stealth effects.
