Valve Releases Windows Drivers for the Steam Deck OLED—but Windows Is Still DIY

Valve’s OLED-specific Windows drivers fill in major hardware support, but Windows remains an unsupported, do-it-yourself setup. Update SteamOS first for the required BIOS.

Valve now lists a dedicated Windows driver set for the Steam Deck OLED, covering graphics, the microSD reader, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and audio. That makes Windows far more practical to install, but it does not make Windows a Valve-supported Steam Deck configuration: Valve supplies the files “as is” and says it does not provide Windows-on-Steam-Hardware support. If you plan to install it, update SteamOS first—the OLED’s Bluetooth support depends on a recent BIOS delivered through SteamOS Beta 3.6.9 or later.

What Valve released—and what it did not

Valve’s Steam Hardware Windows Resources page lists separate Windows drivers for the Steam Deck OLED’s APU/graphics, SD-card reader, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and audio. The OLED-specific packages fill in major hardware support that was missing when the OLED first arrived.

This is a driver bundle, not a new Windows edition, a Windows-native Steam Deck interface or a SteamOS release. Valve provides the downloads as-is and explicitly does not support Windows on Steam Hardware. The distinction matters: the files enable important components, but do not promise that every feature will work perfectly or that Windows updates cannot cause driver problems.

Contemporary coverage reported the OLED driver availability in early 2024. The current Valve page is the clearest source for what is available now; the original Windows driver announcement for the LCD-era Deck dates to 2022 and should not be mistaken for the OLED release. Steam Deck HQ’s report on the OLED driver release provides the contemporaneous context.

Which OLED drivers are available?

Component Valve’s listed installation approach
APU/graphics Download and run setup.exe.
SD-card reader Download and run setup.exe.
Wi-Fi Download the package and install the relevant .inf file.
Bluetooth Download the package and install the relevant .inf file; some instructions also refer to installdriver.cmd.
Audio Install all three listed files: cs35l41.inf, NAU88L21.inf and amdi2scodec.inf.

In Windows 11, an .inf file may appear in File Explorer as a “Setup Information” file rather than being labeled as a driver. Follow the installation instructions on Valve’s page for the specific package; audio is not a single all-in-one installer.

Update SteamOS before installing Windows

Do not skip this step. Valve says the OLED needs a recent BIOS, obtained through SteamOS Beta 3.6.9 or later, before installing Windows for Bluetooth to work correctly. Install the update while SteamOS is still available, then download and save every OLED driver package somewhere accessible from Windows. If Windows is installed before the Wi-Fi driver is in place, the Deck may have no wireless internet connection to fetch it.

The OLED is not simply an LCD Deck with a different screen: its wireless hardware and audio implementation differ. Published OLED specifications list Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3, which helps explain why the OLED’s model-specific packages matter. Do not treat the LCD driver downloads as a substitute for the OLED set. Published Steam Deck OLED hardware specifications

What Windows enables, and what remains limited

With the listed drivers installed, the major components Valve names—graphics, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, audio and the SD-card reader—have Windows drivers. That can make Windows useful for Xbox PC Game Pass and Microsoft Store games, Windows-only launchers and applications, or a particular game whose anti-cheat system does not work under SteamOS. Anti-cheat compatibility remains game-specific; installing Windows does not guarantee that every online game will work.

Drivers do not recreate SteamOS’s integrated handheld experience. Windows may require additional utilities and configuration for controller behavior, performance controls, overlays and a console-like library. Battery life, suspend and resume, input integration, display controls and firmware behavior may differ from SteamOS, and the available evidence does not establish a universal performance or battery advantage for either operating system.

Audio and Bluetooth microphone caveat

Valve’s instructions list three separate OLED audio driver files. Valve also documents Bluetooth audio output while describing microphone functionality as still being worked on. Treat that as the state described on Valve’s driver page, not as proof that no workaround can ever function; do not assume Bluetooth microphone support is equivalent to audio output.

Windows 11 is installable, but not Valve-supported

Valve’s current resources address Windows installations and Windows 11 file behavior. That is distinct from Valve supporting Windows 11 as a Deck configuration. Download installation media from Microsoft’s official Windows 11 page. Downloading the installer does not grant a Windows license; activation and licensing are separate from Valve’s free driver downloads.

Prepare the Deck and choose an installation target

  1. Confirm the model. Make sure the device is a Steam Deck OLED and use the OLED packages, not the LCD set.
  2. Update SteamOS and BIOS. Install SteamOS Beta 3.6.9 or later before Windows so the required recent BIOS is in place for Bluetooth.
  3. Save the drivers offline. Download the OLED packages from Valve’s Windows Resources page and put them on storage Windows can access.
  4. Prepare recovery and backups. Create or obtain SteamOS recovery media using Valve’s linked recovery instructions, and back up files you cannot replace. Depending on the method, Windows installation can erase or alter partitions.
  5. Pick the target deliberately. An external SSD is a practical way to test Windows while leaving the internal SteamOS installation alone. A microSD card is easy to swap but slower and less suited to constant operating-system writes. Installing to the internal SSD is more integrated, but partitioning or boot problems can put SteamOS at risk.
  6. Have input and connectivity ready. A USB keyboard, mouse or USB-C hub can help during setup. A hub or dock with Ethernet is useful if Wi-Fi is not yet installed.
Target Best suited to Main trade-off
External SSD Testing Windows while keeping SteamOS on the internal drive; a full OS installation needing better performance than microSD. Adds a cable or hub and is less convenient to carry during handheld play.
microSD card A removable experiment that avoids changing internal partitions. Slower, less responsive for Windows, and subject to more write-wear concerns than an external SSD.
Internal SSD A fast, integrated Windows setup. Greatest risk to the SteamOS setup and a more involved recovery if partitions or boot files fail.

Dual boot is not a turnkey Valve feature

Valve’s original Windows announcement said the Deck was capable of dual booting, while noting that the SteamOS installer’s dual-boot wizard was not ready at that time. That historical statement is not a promise of an official, turnkey dual-boot setup today. Community partitioning and boot-manager methods exist, but users take responsibility for partition changes, bootloader trouble, recovery and operating-system updates. For a first test, an external drive avoids much of the risk to the internal SteamOS installation.

If Wi-Fi or a driver is missing

No Wi-Fi during Windows setup

  • Use the OLED Wi-Fi package saved before installation and install its relevant .inf file.
  • If the driver files are not on the Deck, transfer them from another computer or phone using accessible storage.
  • Connect a USB-C hub or dock with Ethernet to get online while Wi-Fi is unavailable; Valve notes this as an option in its Windows resources.
  • Restart Windows if the adapter does not appear immediately after driver installation.

A driver refuses to install

  • Check that the package is for the OLED, not the LCD Deck.
  • Extract the download first if it is compressed, then install the actual .inf file rather than the archive.
  • Right-click the .inf and choose Install, or run the supplied setup program or script as instructed for that package.
  • Restart after installing key components. Install the APU package before judging graphics performance.
  • Check Device Manager for unknown devices and hardware IDs. Do not force a driver simply because a device name looks similar.
  • Keep the original packages available in case a Windows Update replaces a driver.

A missing device driver and a successfully installed driver that exposes a feature differently are separate problems. Check Device Manager and the package instructions before reinstalling or forcing a different driver.

Should you install Windows on the OLED?

Windows is a reasonable choice if you need a specific Windows-only game, Game Pass, Microsoft Store software or a general-purpose PC workflow—and are willing to maintain drivers and troubleshoot handheld controls. SteamOS is usually the better fit when the Deck is primarily a gaming device and you value a console-like interface, integrated controls and suspend/resume. The OLED driver release makes Windows a real option, not an automatic upgrade.

If Windows will be the primary operating system and you want vendor-supported Windows controls and updates, consider whether a Windows handheld designed around that environment better fits your needs. For an OLED owner who is curious but not committed, an external SSD is the lower-risk starting point.
