You can turn an OpenStreetMap (OSM) area into a playable Minecraft world with a converter such as osm-to-bedrock. Choose a small area, download its map data or fetch it through Overpass, convert the mapped features into blocks, then import the resulting world into Java or Bedrock Edition. OSM supplies geographic features and tags—not finished 3D buildings—so treat the result as a map-based starting point that may need terrain tuning and manual edits.
What OpenStreetMap can add to Minecraft
OSM stores geographic shapes and descriptive tags. A converter interprets those tags and decides how to represent them with Minecraft blocks; the mappings are conventions chosen by the software, not rules built into OSM.
| OSM feature or tag | Possible Minecraft result |
|---|---|
building=* polygon |
An extruded building footprint |
building:levels=5 |
A building approximately five storeys tall, if supported by the converter |
highway=residential |
A residential road rendered with the selected blocks |
railway=rail |
A rail line |
natural=water |
A water area |
landuse=forest |
Forest or tree-covered terrain |
amenity=school |
A building or point-of-interest marker, depending on the tool |
name=* |
Sign text, if the converter supports signs |
The available detail depends on local OSM mapping. A location may have building footprints but no height tags; roofs, windows, interiors, entrances, and architectural details are rarely guaranteed. Roads can include paths, cycleways, tracks, service roads, and steps as well as streets for cars. Check the mapped data and the converter’s tag support before assuming a feature will appear as expected.
Choose a conversion method
| Method | Best suited to | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|
| osm-to-bedrock | Direct conversion to Java or Bedrock worlds, with configurable scale and mappings | Output depends on supported tags, source-data completeness, and project behavior |
| OSM extract plus converter | Repeatable projects or areas better handled as downloaded files | Requires an extra data-download step |
| WorldPainter | Terrain editing, biomes, layers, materials, and manual finishing | Its documented workflow is not a direct OSM importer |
| Custom pipeline | Developers needing batch processing, custom projections, or specialized game rules | Requires programming and Minecraft world-format expertise |
For a first conversion, the direct converter is the simplest route. WorldPainter is more useful as a finishing tool than as the step that reads OSM data.

Start with a small area
Use a neighborhood, campus, park, town center, or landmark—not a whole city. A small test is quicker to convert and inspect, makes Overpass timeouts less likely, and helps reveal whether the chosen scale and feature mappings suit the project.
The converter documents a bounding-box order of south latitude, west longitude, north latitude, east longitude. For example, this small London-area box can be passed as:
--bbox "51.50,-0.13,51.52,-0.10"
Test the area’s mapped features in OSM before conversion. Missing or outdated geometry in the source cannot be reliably reconstructed by the converter.
Install osm-to-bedrock
The project repository documents prebuilt binaries for Windows, macOS, and Linux, as well as installation from source using Rust. It states that the crate is not yet published to crates.io, so cargo install osm_to_bedrock is not the documented installation route.

Convert a small area directly from Overpass
For a small test, fetch-convert fetches OSM data through Overpass and converts it in one step:
osm-to-bedrock fetch-convert
--bbox "51.50,-0.13,51.52,-0.10"
--output LondonCity/
To request street signs and points of interest in a Paris-area test:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
osm-to-bedrock fetch-convert
--bbox "48.85,2.33,48.87,2.36"
--output Paris/
--signs
--poi-markers
The project documents options for scale, sea level, building height, signs, address signs, POI markers, elevation, vertical scale, elevation smoothing, and spawn coordinates. It also documents switches to disable selected feature classes, including roads, buildings, water, land use, and railways. Use the installed version’s help output to check exact flags:
osm-to-bedrock fetch-convert --help
Successful Overpass downloads are cached by the project, according to its documentation. If a query times out, try a smaller box or use a regional extract instead.
Convert a downloaded OSM extract
For repeatable work or a larger area, obtain an .osm.pbf extract. The project lists Geofabrik for regional extracts, BBBike for custom extracts, and Overpass Turbo for targeted queries. Convert a local file with:
osm-to-bedrock convert
--input city.osm.pbf
--output MyWorld/
To produce Java Edition output, add the edition flag:

osm-to-bedrock convert
--input city.osm.pbf
--output MyWorldJava/
--edition java
The tool documents local .osm.pbf input; it does not document raw .osm XML as direct local input. If your data is XML, convert it to PBF with an appropriate OSM utility or use the direct-fetch workflow.
Tune scale, building height, and terrain
Choose a horizontal scale
The converter documents a default scale of 1.0, described as one block per metre. This is a setting for its geographic conversion, not a guarantee that every feature will be physically exact. A scale such as 2.0 makes the representation more compact:
osm-to-bedrock convert
--input city.osm.pbf
--output MyCity/
--scale 2.0
A 1:1-style layout can preserve recognizable distances and street placement, but even a modest city area may produce a large world and long travel distances. A compact scale can make maps easier to play and share, at the cost of narrow roads disappearing, small buildings merging, and intersections becoming less faithful. Try a small area at the default first, then compare a compact version if playability matters more than geographic fidelity.
The project documents an equirectangular projection and warns that distortion grows at higher latitudes and across larger areas, becoming significant beyond roughly 50 km. Check the box edges as well as the center; split a large region into smaller areas rather than assuming one flat grid will remain dimensionally accurate.
Set expectations for building heights
Where OSM lacks building:levels or height tags, the converter needs a default or heuristic. The project offers a --building-height option. Adjust it if local buildings render too short or too tall, and inspect the tags for important landmarks before conversion. Footprint position, overall mass, and architectural detail are separate kinds of accuracy: a good footprint does not establish a correct height, roof, or interior.
Add real-world elevation
A conversion without an elevation source may be mostly flat. The project supports SRTM data in .hgt format and documents options for vertical scaling and smoothing:

osm-to-bedrock convert
--input city.osm.pbf
--output ElevatedCity/
--elevation N48W123.hgt
--vertical-scale 0.5
--elevation-smoothing 1
Terrain-only generation from a bounding box is also documented:
osm-to-bedrock terrain-convert
--bbox "47.0,-122.5,48.0,-121.5"
--output MtRainierTerrain/
Vertical scale is a visual adjustment, not a universal correction. Too much relief can exaggerate hills; too little can flatten them. When elevation and OSM features meet, roads may cut into hills, buildings may float, and rivers may sit above or below nearby land. Tune the result and inspect tile edges for abrupt changes.
Customize the block palette
A YAML mapping can change how supported tag values are rendered:
osm-to-bedrock convert
--input map.osm.pbf
--output World/
--block-mapping block-mapping.yaml
For example, the project documents mappings in this form:
building:
brick: OakPlanks
highway:
residential: Cobblestone
landuse:
farmland: Dirt
natural:
wood: OakLog
Mappings can establish a consistent style for roads, buildings, farmland, or forests, but they cannot add facts missing from the OSM data.
Import the generated world into Minecraft
Bedrock Edition
The project documents a .mcworld export that can be opened to trigger Minecraft’s import flow. It also documents copying the generated world directory into the Bedrock worlds folder:
Best Value

- Windows:
%LocalAppData%PackagesMicrosoft.MinecraftUWP_*LocalStategamescom.mojangminecraftWorlds - Android:
/sdcard/games/com.mojang/minecraftWorlds/
The Windows package path can vary by installation and distribution. The project’s Web Explorer exports Bedrock .mcworld files directly.
Java Edition
Generate Java output with --edition java, then copy the world directory into the saves folder for your platform:
- Windows:
%AppData%.minecraftsaves - macOS:
~/Library/Application Support/minecraft/saves/ - Linux:
~/.minecraft/saves/
Java and Bedrock use different world formats and import paths; do not treat their output folders as interchangeable.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Inspect and refine the conversion
Before investing time in a large build, copy the generated world and open that copy in the intended Minecraft edition. Check the spawn point, roads, water edges, building heights, empty areas, and overall world size. A generated world is a starting layout: manually improve important landmarks and gameplay areas where the data or automatic mappings fall short.
Recommended Free Tools
WorldPainter can help with terrain shaping, height maps, layers, biomes, materials, and custom objects. Its documentation describes Minecraft map editing and height-map workflows, not a native direct OSM import. A practical hybrid is to generate the OSM-based map first, then use an appropriate WorldPainter workflow for terrain and visual finishing. Its FAQ warns that exporting an imported world instead of merging it back can cause problems when preserving existing map content. WorldPainter does not itself generate villages, ravines, or strongholds; Minecraft controls population and may add other features when asked to populate terrain. See the WorldPainter FAQ and population documentation.
Fix common problems
| Problem | Likely cause | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| Overpass query times out | The bounding box is too large or the query too complex | Reduce the area, split it into tiles, or use a Geofabrik or BBBike extract. |
| World is too large | Too much geography at the default scale | Reduce the area, use a more compact scale, or disable feature classes you do not need. |
| Buildings are too short or tall | Height tags are missing or inconsistent | Adjust --building-height, inspect local tags, and manually improve important landmarks. |
| Terrain is flat | No elevation source was supplied | Use the relevant SRTM .hgt file with --elevation. |
| Terrain looks exaggerated | Vertical relief is too large relative to horizontal scale | Try a lower --vertical-scale, such as 0.5, and compare the result; it is not a universal setting. |
| Local map file is rejected | Input is raw XML rather than documented local PBF input | Convert the XML to PBF or fetch the area through fetch-convert. |
| Java world does not appear | Wrong output edition, nested folder, or saves path | Check --edition java, the folder contents, and the Java saves location. |
| Bedrock world does not import | Wrong file or folder location, or platform-specific import behavior | Open the .mcworld directly or check that the world directory contains Bedrock data and is in the right folder. |
| Roads or water are missing | Features may be unmapped, unsupported, excluded, or lost at the selected scale | Inspect OSM tags, conversion options, and custom mappings. |
| Map edges look distorted | Area is too large for the documented projection | Reduce the area, split it into smaller regions, or use a workflow with a more suitable local projection. |
Credit OpenStreetMap and use data rather than rendered tiles

The OpenStreetMap copyright page explains attribution and the license: copying, distributing, transmitting, and adapting the data requires credit to OpenStreetMap and its contributors, and share-alike obligations may apply to altered or built-upon database material. Legal treatment can depend on how the data is incorporated and distributed; a credit line alone does not necessarily settle every obligation.
For a distributed map, a server, or an educational project, include clear attribution. A suitable starting line is:

Use vector data from an extract or an appropriate API, not bulk downloads of rendered map images. OSM data and the standard tile service have separate rules. The standard tile usage policy requires, among other things, the correct HTTPS tile URL, visible attribution, an identifying User-Agent, and local caching; it prohibits bulk tile scraping or prefetching and does not promise service availability.
