Game Science’s reported decision to decline questions about its founders’ past remarks did not settle the controversy surrounding Black Myth: Wukong. Instead, the issue continued to travel alongside the game’s launch, joined by reports that early-access creators were told to avoid politically and socially charged topics. That is the defensible sense in which the PR strategy failed: it left the public dispute unresolved. The available reporting does not show that silence caused measurable losses in sales, reviews, or players.
What Game Science said—and declined to say
On 20 August 2024, PC Gamer’s Wes Fenlon reported asking a Game Science representative about reports concerning the founders’ past sexist remarks. The representative, unnamed at the studio’s request and speaking through a translator, replied: “We have no comment, we’re sorry. We’re only looking to answer questions related to the game and the gameplay.” Fenlon said he asked again whether the controversy had affected staff or prompted internal changes, and received another “no comment.” PC Gamer’s interview and report document that exchange.

That was a narrow response, not proof that Game Science never addressed the subject in any later venue. In the contemporaneous interview, the studio said it would answer questions about the game and gameplay, while declining the questions about the founders’ remarks.
What the reported streamer guidelines said
Also on 20 August, PC Gamer reported that leaked early-access streamer guidelines restricted discussion of “feminist propaganda, fetishization, and other content that instigates negative discourse,” as well as China’s game-industry policies. PC Gamer attributed the guidelines to co-publisher Hero Games and said the directive had not been shared with that publication or other press outlets.

On 28 August, The Guardian reported that early-access influencers had been told not to discuss politics, Covid-19, “feminist propaganda,” fetishization, or China’s game-industry policies. The newspaper said the directive had circulated on social media and that Game Science and Hero Games had been contacted for comment. The Guardian’s report describes both the restrictions and the public reaction.
The reports establish what the listed restrictions covered and how PC Gamer attributed the directive; they do not establish that every creator received identical instructions or why the list was written. The Guardian said the directive’s connection to Chinese censorship was unclear. It should not be treated as proof of a specific political motive.

Why the silence can be called a PR failure
A response can fail at its immediate communications task without demonstrably damaging a product’s commercial performance. Here, the controversy became public, the studio’s reported answer left questions about the founders’ remarks unanswered, and discussion of the creator restrictions added another point of contention. That gap gave audiences little direct explanation from the studio to assess.
The creator rules also made the dispute about more than a press interview: audiences could debate why creators were being asked to avoid particular subjects, while the publishers’ rationale remained unclear in the cited reporting. The Guardian described divided reactions, including criticism and mockery as well as fans who welcomed the directive as a response to what they called “wokeness.” Those reactions show competing interpretations, not the company’s motive.

What the launch numbers do—and do not—show
The Guardian reported that Game Science said the game sold more than 10 million copies worldwide within three days of launch. It also reported more than 3 million concurrent players across platforms in the first week, including 2 million on Steam, which it described as the second-highest Steam rate ever at the time. These are launch-period figures, not measures of the effect of the PR response.
Neither those numbers nor the contemporaneous reporting establish what sales, reviews, or player activity would have been after a different response. The evidence supports saying that silence left a public controversy unresolved; it does not support saying that the silence caused a commercial loss.

Keep Taiwan’s separate clarification separate
On 18 September 2024, Taiwan’s Ministry of Justice Investigation Bureau clarified that it had not targeted players or influencers who streamed the game, correcting a report it described as apparently inaccurate. That clarification concerns a separate allegation. It is not evidence about Game Science’s response to questions about its founders or the reported creator guidelines. The bureau’s clarification addresses the streaming allegation specifically.
What a more useful response could have addressed
The reporting does not prove that any alternative would have changed audience sentiment or business results. But it does show the questions a public response could have answered more directly: whether the reported restrictions were accurate, who issued them, who they applied to, and why those topics were included. A factual correction or explanation would not guarantee agreement; it would give audiences something more substantive than silence or a list passed privately to creators.

That is the limit and the force of the criticism. Game Science’s reported gameplay-only response did not resolve the questions being asked, and the guidelines widened the debate. Calling that a communications failure is justified as a judgment about unresolved public relations—not as a proven claim that the strategy harmed the game’s sales or reception.
