Metamorphosis VR launched on Meta Quest on October 10, 2024, according to UploadVR’s launch-day update. Digital Trends had previously reported October 10 as the planned release date and named Quest 2 and Quest 3 as platforms. You play as Gregor, a traveling salesman who wakes up transformed into a cockroach in early twentieth-century Vienna. The game sends him through walls and floorboards in a world where familiar objects loom at insect scale, as he tries to save a close friend and regain his humanity. Kafka’s novella is inspiration, not a direct retelling
The premise draws on Franz Kafka’s 1915 novella The Metamorphosis, but the game’s narrative differs considerably from the book, according to UploadVR. A reader can enjoy the game without having read the novella; the book is useful context, not a prerequisite.
Exploration, puzzles, and choices
Launch coverage describes bug characters, puzzles, and choices that affect multiple endings. Catness Game Studios, which handled the Quest conversion, also describes climbing, exploration across large environments, sneaking into hidden spaces such as desk drawers, hidden collectibles, and a tower confrontation. How was the PC game adapted for Quest?
Catness Game Studios says Black Sun Productions entrusted it with converting the existing PC game for Meta Quest. The studio describes reviewing which systems suited a first-person perspective, adapting existing and new mechanics for motion controllers, and optimizing the large world for Quest hardware.
Its reported work included reducing polygon counts and texture sizes, revising lighting and shaders, and tuning collision boxes, environment scale, and controller interactions. Catness says it targeted two 1832×1920 displays at a stable 90 frames per second. That figure is a development target reported by the studio, not an independently verified performance result across Quest devices; it also does not establish a measured comfort outcome.

What did the developers say about the VR experience?
Black Sun Productions CEO Corbin Chase described the role of scale in the game’s design: “One of VR’s most powerful abilities is how it changes our perspective and sense of scale. Metamorphosis uniquely combines confusion, bewilderment, wonder and beauty. All imparted by that shift in perspective, it feels like this game was always meant for VR.” The statement was quoted by UploadVR.
