The best follower traits in Cult of the Lamb depend on what your cult needs most: choose Industrious for faster work, Faithful for faster devotion generation, or Gullible for stronger loyalty gains. Naturally Obedient is useful for an immediate Faith boost when recruiting, but it does not provide an ongoing production bonus.
Which follower traits are best overall?
There is no single winner for every save. The practical choice is the trait that addresses your current bottleneck:

- Industrious: increases work speed by 15%, making it a strong pick when the cult needs resources or faster labor.
- Faithful: generates devotion 15% faster, which helps when shrine progression is the priority.
- Gullible: increases loyalty gained from all sources by 15%, useful when loyalty actions are a regular part of managing the flock.
- Naturally Obedient: grants 10 Faith when the follower is recruited. This is a one-time boost, not a continuing production effect.
These figures and effects are listed in the follower trait reference. They describe the traits’ effects, not a measured ranking of which build performs best.
How should you choose between work and devotion?
The Work & Worship I doctrine offers a genuine flock-wide choice between Industrious and Faithful. Choose Industrious when labor and resource gathering are holding you back; choose Faithful when generating shrine devotion is more valuable. The doctrine reference describes both as viable options for different priorities.
#1 Best Overall
- Start your own cult in a land of false prophets
- Venture out into diverse and mysterious regions to build a loyal community of woodland Followers
- Repay your debt by building a loyal following
- Spread your Word to become the one true cult!
Doctrines and individual follower traits are not all competing in one pool. A doctrine can grant a trait across the flock, while individual followers can have starting, special, or expansion-related traits. Consider the effect and how broadly it applies before treating two traits as direct substitutes.
When are other positive traits worth choosing?
For preaching and illness
- Zealous lets a follower ignore dissenters when they preach. It offers a specific utility rather than a general output increase.
- Strong Constitution makes a follower heal 15% faster while sick and resting in bed, so it is a resilience benefit.
For Faith-focused doctrines
- Devotee increases Faith gained from sermons.
- Belief in Absolution grants 10 Faith for each day that begins with nobody in prison. Its value depends on meeting that condition each day.
- Grass Eater removes the negative Faith effect of eating Grassy Gruel.
- Prohibitionism increases work speed and devotion generation by 10%, but carries a sickness risk after the Brainwashing Ritual.
These are conditional picks, not automatic upgrades for every cult. Their effects and conditions are detailed in the doctrine reference and trait reference.
Rank #2
- BUILD YOUR FLOCK - Collect and use resources to build new structures, perform dark rituals to appease the gods, and give sermons to reinforce the faith of your flock
- DESTROY THE NON-BELIEVERS - Explore a sprawling, randomly generated world, fight off hordes of enemies and defeat rival cult leaders in order to absorb their power and assert your cult's dominance
- SPREAD YOUR WORD - Train your flock and embark on a quest to explore and discover the secrets
Which traits matter in later-game or expansion scenarios?
- Pure of Heart makes a follower less likely to become possessed by Sin. It helps manage Sin, but does not improve ordinary work or devotion output.
- Immortal prevents a follower from reaching old age; it does not prevent death from other causes or desertion. The trait is associated with specific followers or the Golden Skull Necklace rather than a routine starting trait.
- Invigorated by Cold improves work speed in winter and reduces it in summer. Chionophile grants Loyalty when freezing. Woolly prevents freezing but is exclusive to Yngya. Treat these as seasonal or availability-dependent effects, especially when considering Woolhaven play.
- Don’t Starve prevents starvation and is exclusive to Webber as a starting trait. It can be valuable when starvation protection matters, but is not a general trait roll.
Check the game’s current patch and expansion context before relying on a special or seasonal trait. The trait reference is an unofficial fan project; its index says its game-data records are read from version 1.5.26. The wiki index identifies the project and its version note.
What negative traits should you account for?
Negative traits can add operating costs, but their effects alone do not establish that every affected follower should be removed. Account for what each one changes:

- Faithless: reduces devotion generation by 15%.
- Cynical: reduces gains from loyalty sources by 15%.
- Germophobe: loses Faith when the follower falls ill.
- Poet: the follower does not work.
- Spy: leaves after five days and takes 10% of the cult’s gold.
These listed penalties and behaviors come from the trait reference; weigh them against the follower’s role and your cult’s immediate needs.

- If the cult needs resources or faster labor, favor Industrious.
- If shrine progression is the bottleneck, favor Faithful.
- If loyalty actions are taking repeated attention, value Gullible.
- If you want an immediate Faith increase from a new recruit, value Naturally Obedient.
- For a specific system, choose conditionally: Pure of Heart for Sin risk, Don’t Starve for starvation protection if available, or an appropriate winter trait for seasonal Woolhaven play.
The trait effects above support this situational ranking; they do not establish player popularity, win rates, or a universal best build.
