Yes, in some setups—but not through every multiplayer mode. Ryujinx can connect to a real Switch when the game and network setup support LAN or local wireless: an unmodified console needs a game with LAN mode, while a modified console can use LAN or ldn_mitm. Ryujinx does not support Nintendo Switch Online, so this is not a way to join the game’s normal online service. Ryubing’s FAQ and multiplayer guide describe the supported approaches.
Which multiplayer mode can connect Ryujinx to a real Switch?
The right method depends on the game’s multiplayer options and whether the Switch is modified. LAN mode and local wireless are distinct game features; Ryujinx’s LDN support is not the same as Nintendo Switch Online.
| Setup or mode | What it does | What the real Switch needs |
|---|---|---|
| LAN mode | Connects systems using a game’s LAN feature, typically on the same network. | The game must support LAN mode. The FAQ identifies this as the option for an unmodified Switch. |
| LDN / local wireless | Emulates a game’s Local Play or Local Wireless feature, including connections between Ryujinx users over the internet. | For a modified Switch, the FAQ describes using ldn_mitm to make local wireless behave like LAN for local connections. |
| Nintendo Switch Online | The game’s normal Nintendo online service. | Not supported by Ryujinx; LDN does not provide access to it. |
These distinctions are set out in the FAQ and LDN guide. A game having online multiplayer does not by itself mean it can connect to Ryujinx.
What to check before trying to connect
- Console status: An unmodified Switch needs a game with LAN mode. The FAQ describes
ldn_mitmfor modified consoles; it is not a requirement-free option for an unmodified system. - Game mode: Confirm that the exact game has LAN or local wireless support. A title that only offers Nintendo Switch Online play will not work through that service in Ryujinx.
- Game version: The multiplayer guide says all players need the same game version. Updates can change behavior or introduce incompatibilities.
- Network: The LDN guide calls for a high-speed connection. When hosting, inbound firewall access may be needed. For peer-to-peer play, the guide recommends UPnP; without it, a proxy host may still work, but with higher latency.
- Performance: Stable gameplay matters. The guide warns that Mario Kart 8 Deluxe can disconnect if a player cannot maintain 60 fps, and shader-compilation stutter can trigger connection errors.
Why compatibility varies by game
Support is title- and version-specific, not a universal Ryujinx feature that works identically in every game. Check the current game entry and setup notes in the Ryubing multiplayer guide before setting up a session.

The documentation gives concrete examples of limits: Pokémon Scarlet and Violet features that require Nintendo Switch Online—including Surprise Trade, Battle Stadium, and Mystery Gift—will not work through Ryujinx. The FAQ also notes that an update to Pokémon Sword and Shield made LAN mode inconsistent. These cases show why support should be checked for the exact game version rather than inferred from another title.

The original Ryujinx project was discontinued on October 1, 2024. Ryubing’s documentation describes its current project as a quality-of-life uplift for existing users, and its docs contain the current instructions. Build and game-compatibility details can change, so consult the current FAQ and multiplayer guide rather than relying on old setup advice.
