Bungie’s first gameplay reveal for Marathon aired on April 12, 2025, and initially named September 23, 2025 as the release date. That date changed: Bungie later set the launch for March 5, 2026, and confirmed the game went live on that date for Steam, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S.

What Bungie showed in the first Marathon gameplay reveal

Bungie published its recap of the gameplay reveal livestream on April 12, 2025. The showcase featured game director Joe Ziegler, franchise art director Joseph Cross, senior design lead Lars Bakken, gameplay director Andrew Witts, and senior social media manager Andy Salisbury. Bungie’s recap linked viewers to a reveal trailer, a gameplay overview, creator gameplay highlights, and a cinematic short. Read Bungie’s reveal recap.

The gameplay overview described Marathon as a shooter with three-player crews as well as solo play. Bungie’s later pre-release recap added detail about the planned structure and systems: three surface zones—Perimeter, Dire Marsh, and Outpost—and the Cryo Archive as an initial end-game zone. It also covered Runner shell archetypes, weapons and mods, factions and their upgrade trees, and a Codex for achievements and narrative discoveries. These are Bungie’s descriptions of the game, rather than independent assessments of how those systems play. See Bungie’s pre-release gameplay and development recap.

When did Marathon come out?

Marathon launched on March 5, 2026. Bungie announced that date on January 20, 2026, replacing the September 23, 2025 date it had listed during the April 2025 reveal. On launch day, Bungie confirmed the game was live. Bungie’s revised-date announcement and launch-day confirmation establish the timeline.
