What Happened to Bigpoint’s Game of Thrones MMO, Seven Kingdoms?

Bigpoint announced an HBO-partnered browser MMORPG based on the TV series in 2012 and later named it Game of Thrones Seven Kingdoms. The company planned a closed beta for fall 2012, but the contemporary announcements do not confirm that the beta happened or that the game launched.

What Bigpoint announced in 2012

On March 1, 2012, Bigpoint announced that it would present a first look at the game’s pre-production during the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco, scheduled for March 7–9. The announcement described a browser-based online role-playing game set in Westeros and its Seven Kingdoms, inspired by HBO’s adaptation of George R. R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire. Animation World Network reproduced the announcement.

Bigpoint said the game would bring the series’ political conflict into play: players would have to master combat and politics to protect their dynasty. The company named Norwegian studio Artplant as its development partner and Unity as the platform. It announced an initial closed beta target of fall 2012; that was a plan, not confirmation that testing took place.

The project became Game of Thrones Seven Kingdoms

A July 2012 announcement gave the project its official name, Game of Thrones Seven Kingdoms, and described it as free-to-play. Set after the deaths of King Robert Baratheon and Ned Stark, its proposed play involved alliances, player-versus-player combat, sieges, and political maneuvering. Westeros.org posted the announcement on July 3, 2012.

  • IMMERSE YOURSELF IN WESTEROS: Experience the epic battles and political intrigue of Westeros in this immersive board game.
  • FAITHFUL ADAPTATION: Based on George R.R. Martin's novels, it captures the essence of the iconic series.

The announcement-era concept was therefore an online role-playing game built around Westeros politics and conflict—not the same product as every later game carrying the Game of Thrones name.

Did Seven Kingdoms launch?

The available contemporary announcements establish the project’s planned format, partners, features, and beta target. They do not establish whether the closed beta occurred, whether the game launched, or when development ended. Its eventual outcome remains unconfirmed by these sources.

Do not confuse it with Game of Thrones: Winter is Coming

Bigpoint’s current catalog lists Game of Thrones: Winter is Coming, a PC strategy game developed by YOOZOO Games and licensed by Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment under HBO. Bigpoint’s official game page and Game of Thrones portal describe that current offering. They do not say it is the same project as Seven Kingdoms, which had Artplant named as its development partner in 2012.

What the announcement’s quotes tell us

Bigpoint’s 2012 announcement framed the project as an extension of the show and its political, competitive world. Bigpoint CEO and founder Heiko Hubertz praised the series’ detail and following; Martin said its stories of honor, adventure, and rivalry lent themselves to gaming. Executive producers David Benioff and D. B. Weiss also described the online role-playing game as a natural extension of the series. These are promotional statements from the announcement, not evidence about the game’s eventual release.
