Choose Summer Intern if you are unsure what role you want. It has the largest listed starting trait-point budget—12—and no job-specific bonuses or forced traits, leaving you free to shape your character. If you already have a preferred playstyle, a specialist job can give you useful early skills, XP bonuses, or gear instead.
How to choose your starting job
Jobs in Abiotic Factor are starting specializations, not permanent classes: skills can improve through XP earned by performing related actions. Compare the trait points you can spend at character creation with the starting skills, skill-specific XP bonuses, crafting XP, gear, and any forced traits. The figures below are reported by the Abiotic Factor Wiki’s Jobs reference; its page was not directly retrievable and the surfaced excerpt was crawled about three weeks before this article’s research date. Check the descriptions in your current game version before treating exact values as current.
Quick recommendations
- Undecided or want flexibility: Summer Intern.
- Want a defined specialty from the start: choose the job that matches the actions you expect to use most.
- Interested in Defense Analyst: weigh its combat skills and security gear against its low point budget and forced Slow Learner trait.
What each standard job offers
Starting points are the points available for selecting traits during character creation. Skill and XP bonuses make related actions more rewarding early on, while starting items provide an initial equipment advantage. They are trade-offs rather than proof that other jobs cannot develop the same skills.
| Job | Starting points | Starting skills | XP and crafting bonuses | Starting items and forced traits | Good fit if you want to… |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Summer Intern | 12 | None listed | None listed | No items or forced traits listed | Build a flexible character without a job-specific direction. |
| Lab Assistant | 10 | +3 Sprinting, +3 Sneaking, +2 Strength | +50% Sneaking XP | Lab Gloves; no forced trait listed | Move quickly and avoid detection. |
| Epimedical Bionomicist | 9 | +3 First Aid, +1 Cooking, +1 Agriculture | +50% First Aid XP; First Aid XP when crafting health or medical items | Surgical Mask; no forced trait listed | Focus on first aid and medical crafting. |
| Trans-Kinematic Researcher | 8 | +2 Blunt Melee, +2 Fortitude, +2 Sprinting, +2 Strength | +75% Fortitude XP; +50% Strength XP | No starting items listed; no forced trait listed | Build durability and blunt-combat skills. |
| Archotechnic Consultant | 7 | +2 Construction, +1 Strength, +3 Crafting | +50% Construction XP; Construction XP when crafting deployables | Work Gloves; no forced trait listed | Build structures and craft deployables. |
| Phytogenetic Botanist | 9 | +3 Agriculture, +2 Cooking, +2 Strength | +50% Agriculture XP; Agriculture XP when crafting farming items | Gardening Gloves; no forced trait listed | Grow crops and support agriculture. |
| Somatic Gastrologist | 9 | +2 Sharp Melee, +1 Fortitude, +4 Cooking | +50% Cooking XP; Cooking XP when crafting food and cooking items | No starting items listed; no forced trait listed | Prioritize cooking and food crafting. |
| Paratheoretical Physicist | 8 | +3 Throwing, +3 Crafting, +1 Sneaking, +1 Reloading, +1 Construction | +50% Throwing XP and +50% Crafting XP; crafting XP when researching items | No starting items listed; no forced trait listed | Use throwing weapons and a broad set of utility skills. |
| Defense Analyst | 5 | +2 Fortitude, +2 Strength, +1 Blunt Melee, +2 Reloading, +2 Accuracy | +75% Accuracy XP and +75% Reloading XP are listed; the reference says Slow Learner’s −20% XP penalty is applied first, leaving these at +40% of baseline | Security Cap, Well-worn Security Vest, Basic Baton; forced Slow Learner | Start with firearm-related skills and security equipment, accepting the trait-point and XP trade-offs. |
Why Summer Intern is the safest default
Summer Intern gives you the most room to choose traits at the start, without steering you toward a particular skill or imposing a forced trait. That makes it a practical choice when you have not yet settled on a role or would rather decide through play.

When tired from maintaining a same sitting posture, please rest assured to lean back and charge your waist pillow, it will relax your tired waist energetically.
- More Stable Than Others: Common gaming chairs are equipped with plastic legs generally to save costs, but we still insist on applying the same material as the built-in metal frame. Whether child rolls on the chair or a pet jumps up excitedly, the sturdy metal legs will keep the chair stable firmly.

A July 22, 2025 Steam Community guide by Robert N. Adams also recommended Summer Intern on the basis of its point budget. The guide is an individual player’s advice, not a tested ranking, and Steam currently displays a removal notice for it. The same guide argued that Wrinkly Brainmeat’s 20% general skill-XP increase could be preferable to a job’s bonus for one skill; treat that as dated build advice, not a universal rule.
Match a specialist job to the way you want to play
- Stealth and movement: Lab Assistant starts with Sprinting, Sneaking, and Strength, plus a Sneaking XP bonus.
- Medical support: Epimedical Bionomicist improves First Aid and gains related XP from medical crafting.
- Durability and blunt combat: Trans-Kinematic Researcher starts with Fortitude, Strength, Sprinting, and Blunt Melee.
- Building and crafting: Archotechnic Consultant brings Construction and Crafting skills, with a Construction XP bonus tied to deployables.
- Agriculture: Phytogenetic Botanist starts with Agriculture and gains related XP through farming-item crafting.
- Cooking: Somatic Gastrologist has the highest listed starting Cooking skill and earns related XP through food and cooking-item crafting.
- Throwing and utility: Paratheoretical Physicist combines Throwing and Crafting bonuses with several additional starting skills.
- Firearm combat: Defense Analyst starts with Accuracy and Reloading, but has the fewest points of the standard jobs and forces Slow Learner.
Can you change your job later?
References disagree or may describe different versions or contexts. The Character Creation reference says job and trait choices cannot be changed for that player in the world save. The Jobs reference separately describes changing jobs at Cascade Laboratories with IS-0017, while warning that skills reset to level 3 and the new job’s starting gear is not granted. These claims do not establish a consequence-free respec. Treat your opening choice as consequential, and verify whether the option exists—and what it resets—in your current version before relying on it.
