Can the Xbox Series S Run Offline? What Works Without Internet

Xbox Series S can run some games without internet, but offline play depends on the game, its digital license, and preparation. Here’s what to check before going offline.

Yes—an Xbox Series S can run some games offline, but not every game or feature will work without an internet connection. The console is all-digital, so you need to download games in advance. Offline access also depends on the game’s design and whether its digital license is available on that console.

What you can and can’t do offline

Being able to turn on the console without internet is different from being able to use every game or feature. Microsoft says games are not required to support offline play, so a game may need a connection even after it has been installed. Microsoft’s guidance for game developers leaves offline support to each game.

  • Can work offline: downloaded games and game modes that support offline play, provided the required digital license is available.
  • Won’t work offline: online multiplayer, cloud streaming, server-hosted modes, and other features that require a connection.
  • May vary by game: a title can offer an offline single-player mode while keeping some features online-only.

Check the specific game’s store listing or publisher guidance, and launch it while connected before you expect to play offline.

How digital game licenses affect offline play

Microsoft’s digital-goods rules describe two license types for Xbox games: a device license associated with the console designated as Home, and a user license associated with your Microsoft account. On the Home console, anyone using it can access games covered by their device licenses. On another console, access depends on signing in with the account that holds the user license and is subject to Microsoft’s concurrent-use rules. Read Microsoft’s digital-goods usage rules.

If you rely on a game’s device license while offline, make sure the Series S you plan to use is designated as the Home console for the relevant account. Microsoft allows a console to be designated as Home for multiple people and limits Home-console changes to five during a rolling one-year period. That limit concerns changing the setting; it is not an offline-play time allowance.

Prepare your Series S before you lose internet

  1. Finish console setup and sign in while connected, using the account that owns the game or has the relevant subscription.
  2. Download and install the game, including updates it needs to run.
  3. Check the Home-console designation if you expect to rely on the console’s device license for offline access.
  4. Check the game’s offline requirements with its store listing or publisher. Do not infer offline support just because the game has a single-player campaign.
  5. Test the game offline before a trip or outage, especially if it uses online services.

The available official sources do not establish a current consumer menu sequence for switching the Series S into an offline mode, so this guide does not give one.

Series S has no disc fallback

The Xbox Series S is all-digital and does not play physical discs. Any game you plan to use offline must therefore be obtained digitally and downloaded ahead of time; a disc cannot serve as a backup. Microsoft’s Series S product page describes the console’s digital-only design.

Selected original Xbox, Xbox 360, and Xbox One games are playable through backward compatibility. Offline multiplayer, such as local co-op or system link, works only where the compatible game supports it; features differ by title. See Xbox’s backward-compatibility information.

Game Pass and other subscription games

Do not assume a Game Pass title will work offline simply because it is installed or has a campaign. Offline access can depend on the game’s own requirements and the applicable license. Microsoft’s licensing rules explain Home-console and account-based access, but they do not establish one universal offline verification period for every subscription title. Check the current terms for your subscription and the game’s requirements, then test it while disconnected before relying on it.
