Yes. Xbox says the Series X is designed to work both horizontally and vertically, and neither position requires an additional stand. Choose the orientation that fits your space, while leaving room around the console for airflow.
How to place the Xbox Series X horizontally
Set it on a stable, level surface with enough surrounding space for airflow. Xbox’s setup guidance recommends leaving extra room around the console, but does not specify a minimum clearance distance. Check that the shelf or cabinet and connected cables fit without pressing the console against nearby objects.
Xbox designed the console to fit on living-room shelves and furniture when placed horizontally, and says it balanced the design for stability in either orientation. Horizontal placement is an intended use, not a workaround.
Horizontal or vertical: which should you choose?
Both orientations are supported. The practical choice depends on your available shelf footprint and height, access to rear cables, and whether nearby walls or objects leave room for airflow. Xbox publishes no comparative thermal measurements showing that one orientation performs better than the other.

Check the dimensions before choosing a shelf
Xbox’s November 2020 setup article lists the Series X as 5.94 inches wide, 5.94 inches deep, and 11.85 inches tall in its stated vertical dimensions. Use those measurements to judge whether the console and its cables will fit in the position you plan to use; allow space around it for airflow as well.
Does it need a stand?
No separate stand is required. Xbox states that the Series X can be used horizontally or vertically without an additional stand. Use a support surface that is stable and appropriate for the orientation you choose.
