Yes. You can use Xbox without a Game Pass subscription, and Xbox lets every player access online multiplayer in free-to-play games. For many paid games on Xbox consoles, online multiplayer requires a subscription; Xbox currently includes that benefit in Game Pass Essential, Premium, and Ultimate.
What “Xbox Live” means now
“Xbox Live” is still often used informally to mean Xbox’s online services, but Xbox Live Gold is no longer the current subscription name. Xbox’s legacy page says, “Xbox Live Gold is now Xbox Game Pass Core.” That explains the old name, but Core is not the label Xbox currently uses for its entry-level console multiplayer plan. The current lineup includes Game Pass Essential, Premium, Ultimate, and PC Game Pass. Xbox Live Gold legacy page · Current Game Pass plans
When you need a subscription to play online
Free-to-play games on Xbox consoles
Xbox says access to multiplayer for free-to-play games is open to every Xbox player. You do not need Game Pass just to play the online multiplayer modes of these games, though you still need to meet the game’s account, platform, network, and regional requirements. Xbox plan comparison
Paid games on Xbox consoles
For paid games whose online console multiplayer requires paid access, Xbox lists Game Pass Essential as including online console multiplayer. Premium and Ultimate also include console multiplayer. Requirements can vary by game, so check the specific game’s listing if you are unsure whether a subscription is needed.

PC play
PC Game Pass is a separate plan from the console plans that include online console multiplayer. Do not assume a PC subscription grants the same console multiplayer entitlement; choose based on where you play and check the plan details on Xbox’s plan comparison page.
Which option fits your situation?
| What you want to do | Game Pass needed? | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Play online multiplayer in a free-to-play game on Xbox | No subscription is required for the multiplayer access Xbox describes. | Game-specific account, platform, network, and regional requirements. |
| Play online multiplayer in a paid game on an Xbox console | A subscription may be required; Essential, Premium, and Ultimate include online console multiplayer. | The game’s requirements and the plan’s current benefits. |
| Play on PC | PC Game Pass is distinct from console multiplayer plans. | Whether the game and subscription cover the PC features you want. |
| Get a catalog of games | That is separate from merely having online access. | Which games are in the plan and whether they remain available; a subscription is not ownership of every game. |
How much does the console multiplayer plan cost?
When checked on October 8, 2026, the U.S. Xbox Store listing displayed Game Pass Essential at $9.99 per month and described it as including online console multiplayer. That is a region- and date-specific listing, not a universal or guaranteed current price; promotions and local pricing may differ.
