Aim at a movable object and hold the Use/Activate control to pick it up and reposition it without adding it to your inventory. On the default PC keyboard layout, that control is E; in Skyrim VR on PS4 with Move controllers, hold the Move button to grab.
How to grab and move an object
- PC keyboard: Aim the crosshair at a movable physics object, then hold the Activate key. Bethesda’s PC manual lists E as the default Activate key. A Skyrim controls reference distinguishes holding Use to manipulate an object from tapping it to pick the item up into your inventory.
- Keep holding the control as you move your aim to reposition the object.
- Release the control to let go.
If you changed your keyboard bindings, use your current Activate binding instead of assuming E.
Controls differ in Skyrim VR and on PC gamepads
Skyrim VR on PS4 with Move controllers
Bethesda’s Skyrim VR PS4 mini manual identifies the Move button as Interact and says, “Press and hold to grab.” The manual also says you can swap left- and right-hand controls with the Main Hand option.
PC with a controller
Bethesda Support explains how to enable a controller in the PC version: open the pause menu, go to Settings → Gameplay, and fill in the Controller setting. That setup guidance does not establish one universal gamepad button for grabbing objects, so use the current on-screen prompt or your configured control mapping.

Move objects from a distance with Telekinesis
Telekinesis is an alternative when you want to hold an object in the air from a distance. An IGN guide passage notes that using the spell to hold objects increases Alteration skill and warns that an object striking a nearby NPC can make that NPC hostile. The available guide passage does not establish where or how to obtain the spell.
