Can you use a lead on a villager?
No. The Minecraft community wiki explicitly excludes villagers from the entities that can be leashed: Minecraft Wiki: Lead. This answer is about ordinary gameplay; the sources reviewed do not establish how commands, add-ons, or custom servers might change the behavior.
What changed with Minecraft’s newer leash mechanics?
Java Snapshot 25w16a, published April 15, 2025, expanded leash mechanics to let players connect two mobs and leash entities such as boats: Minecraft Snapshot 25w16a. Bedrock Edition 1.21.90 likewise documents leashing any leashable entity to another leashable entity: Minecraft Bedrock Edition 1.21.90.
Those changes expand the ways eligible entities can be linked; they do not make every mob leashable. The official Java snapshot article shows a villager riding in a boat attached beneath a Happy Ghast, not a lead attached directly to the villager. Its description says, “Now you can travel the desert with your own camel caravan or airlift your treasures in a boat with chest attached to your happy ghast.” That example illustrates a boat-and-leash arrangement, not direct villager leashing.

How do you move a villager instead?
Use a boat or minecart. The official Java snapshot material directly shows a villager being transported in a boat and describes moving villagers by boat. A minecart is another in-game transport option, but the sources cited here do not compare the methods’ speed, cost, or detailed setup, so there is no evidence-based universal winner.
- Consider a boat for a route where you can guide it over the available terrain; it is the transport method shown in the official snapshot article.
- Consider a minecart if your route already has rails or you can build a rail route.
A 2022 official lead explainer describes leads as useful for tying many neutral or friendly mobs to a fence, but it predates the 2025 changes and does not list villagers: Taking Inventory: Lead. It should not be treated as a complete current list of leashable entities.
