Batocera.linux is a bootable Linux distribution built for retro gaming and emulation. To try it, choose an image for your device, flash it to a USB drive or SD card, and boot the device from that media. You can then add your own game files and any required BIOS files, and connect a controller. Batocera is not a Windows application, and support depends on the specific hardware and emulator.

What is Batocera.linux?

Batocera is an operating system focused on emulation and retro gaming. Its main interface is a customized version of EmulationStation, which lets you browse systems and games with a controller rather than working from a conventional desktop. The project documents many consoles, computers, arcade platforms, and related applications; the precise options depend on the system and emulator involved. Batocera Getting Started · Batocera Systems

Batocera also includes some non-emulator applications and integrations, such as DOSBox, WINE, Flatpak, Steam integration, and Moonlight. Their presence does not mean every app or game will work on every device.

What devices can run Batocera?

The project maintains device documentation for desktop PCs, graphics cards, mini PCs and NUCs, single-board computers, handhelds, handheld PCs, wireless adapters, and selected special-purpose systems. This is a guide to supported categories, not a guarantee that every model, component, or hardware revision behaves the same way. Check the Batocera device index for your exact target.

For PCs, the image is commonly for x86_64 architecture; other hardware may need a device-specific image. Graphics and driver behavior can vary by platform and Batocera release. The PC hardware documentation includes some notes tied to older versions, so do not treat those as universal current requirements. Consult the relevant PC hardware documentation for your GPU and platform.

Compatibility also varies by emulated system and emulator or core. Batocera’s systems overview links to compatibility information; there is no basis for assuming that every game or console will run well on a given device.

How to install and boot Batocera

Batocera is distributed as a bootable system image. You flash the image to removable media and start the target computer or device from it; you do not install it as a regular application inside Windows. The official installation guide provides the current image and device-specific instructions.

  1. Choose the target device and image. Confirm the exact platform or architecture first. A PC commonly uses the x86_64 image, while other devices can require their own image.
  2. Flash the image to boot media. Use an imaging tool to write it to a USB flash drive or, where appropriate for the device, an SD card. This creates bootable media; simply copying the image file onto the drive is not the same process.
  3. Boot from that media. Connect the USB drive or SD card and select it as the startup device using the target machine’s boot menu or firmware settings. The exact key and procedure vary by device.
  4. Try Batocera before changing the internal drive. Booting from removable media lets you evaluate the setup without replacing the existing operating system on the internal disk.

Installing to an internal drive

Batocera can be installed onto an internal disk from a running system, but this is not a harmless way to test it: the installation overwrites the disk’s existing data and operating system. Confirm the destination drive carefully and back up files you need before proceeding. The official guide also notes that some motherboards may not boot successfully from internal storage. If you are uncertain, use removable media instead of converting the internal drive.

Adding game files and BIOS files

Batocera’s game systems generally appear in the interface after the corresponding ROM files are added. You can transfer files using the running system’s file manager, an SMB network share, or SFTP; the official file-transfer guide explains the available methods.

Batocera includes selected freely distributable games and can download additional free titles, but it is not a source for commercial game libraries. Add only game files you are entitled to use. Some emulated systems also require separate BIOS files, and the requirement depends on the system. Use the BIOS readme or checker described in the guide to identify missing or incorrect files. Arcade setups can involve additional configuration, so do not assume every game is plug-and-play.

Choosing and configuring a controller

Batocera supports major controller types, and generic wired USB controllers are a straightforward starting point. Connect one and follow the on-screen configuration if prompted. A controller not recognized by Batocera’s internal database may need manual button mapping.

Bluetooth controllers can also work, but setup depends on the controller, the target device’s Bluetooth radio or a compatible adapter, and the relevant pairing steps. Arcade controls and I-PAC-style interfaces are options for cabinet builds, but can require additional configuration. Before buying a particular controller or adapter, check Batocera’s supported-controller guide for that model and your target platform.

What to check before you start

  • Find the exact device or architecture in Batocera’s device documentation and select its image.
  • Decide whether you are testing from removable media or installing to an internal disk; an internal installation overwrites existing contents.
  • Prepare your own game files and check whether the systems you want to use need BIOS files.
  • Choose a controller supported by your device, and account for Bluetooth pairing or manual mapping if relevant.
  • Check emulator compatibility for the specific systems and games you care about instead of assuming a broad device listing guarantees performance.

After the first boot, Batocera’s Getting Started guide covers navigation, hotkeys, Wi-Fi, file setup, and update or download facilities.
