This editorial ranking prioritizes practical value while flagging dependencies and compatibility checks. Mod support arrived with Patch 7, but individual files can become outdated after game updates, so check each listing against your current build before installing.
How this ranking works
This is a goal-based shortlist, not a claim that one ordering suits every player or platform. Interface and quality-of-life changes come first because they can improve a playthrough without necessarily changing its rules; gameplay and party-size changes follow, with visual customization and support utilities included for players who want them. The recommendations draw on editorial mod lists and live mod listings, not independent testing. Availability, dependencies, and compatibility can change.
Before installing any mod, check its current file notes, supported game version, requirements, and installation channel. Larian’s [official mod support page] explains the in-game Mod Manager and Toolkit, while its [Mod Issues FAQ] warns that updates and mod conflicts can affect functionality.
The 12 best Baldur’s Gate 3 mods
1. Better Inventory UI
A strong first pick for players who spend time sorting equipment, supplies, and loot. It focuses on inventory usability rather than adding a new combat system or changing the campaign. It is recommended by both PC Gamer and a 2026 third-party BG3 mod guide; check its live listing for the current file and any requirements before installing. - Online multiplayer for up to four players - allows you to combine your forces in combat, and split your party to follow your own quests and agendas. Concoct the perfect plan together… or introduce an element of chaos when your friends least expect it
- Origin Character - offer a hand-crafted experience, each with their own unique traits, agenda, and outlook on the world. Their stories intersect with the entire narrative, and your choices will determine whether those stories end in redemption, salvation, domination, or many other outcomes
- Evolved turn-based combat - based on the D&D 5e ruleset. Team-based initiative, advantage & disadvantage, and roll modifiers join combat cameras, expanded environmental interactions, and a new fluidity in combat that rewards strategy and foresight
- Define the future of the Forgotten Realms - through your choices, and the roll of the dice. No matter who you play, or what you roll, the world and its inhabitants will react to your story
- Player-initiated turn-based mode - allows you to pause the world around you at any time even outside of combat. Whether you see an opportunity for a tactical advantage before combat begins, want to pull off a heist with pin-point precision, or need to escape a fiendish trap. Split your party, prepare ambushes, sneak in the darkness -- create your own luck!
2. Better Containers
For players who want loot containers to be easier to read and manage, Better Containers is a focused quality-of-life choice. PC Gamer recommends it for container readability. Because it changes interface presentation, pair it with a check of the current listing and compatibility notes rather than assuming it works with every UI mod.
3. Highlight Everything
This exploration-oriented option is intended to make interactable objects easier to spot. It appears in the 2026 BG3 Mod Manager guide’s recommendations. If you frequently miss objects in busy environments, it may be more useful than a cosmetic add-on; confirm the listing’s current compatibility and dependencies before use.
4. WASD Character Movement
WASD Character Movement offers a different way to navigate than the game’s default point-and-click movement. The 2026 guide says it requires Script Extender, so it brings more setup than a simple in-game-library mod. Check that the required version is available for your game build and follow the mod author’s installation instructions.
5. Mod Manager Fixes
A small interface-oriented fix for players using the in-game manager, recommended by the 2026 guide. Its appeal is practical rather than transformative: it is meant to improve the manager experience, not add campaign content. Check whether the current version supports your installed build and whether it requires another UI mod.

6. ImprovedUI (ImpUI)
ImprovedUI is best understood as a UI foundation that some other mods depend on, rather than a standalone gameplay upgrade. The 2026 guide describes it as a baseline and notes that other mods may require it. Install it when a chosen mod specifies it, and ensure dependent mods are built for compatible versions.

7. Norbyte’s Script Extender
Script Extender is support infrastructure used by many third-party mods, according to PC Gamer. It is not a visible content mod on its own, but it can be necessary for features such as custom movement or other script-based changes. Larian notes that script-focused mods may exist outside the official supported pipeline; consult the utility’s own current instructions and the requirements of each mod that depends on it. Larian’s Community Update #27.
8. Party Size Begone / Party Limit Begone
This mod family is for players who want to bring a larger group along. PC Gamer describes Party Size Begone as raising the limit from four to eight and labels it single-player only in its recommendation. The Nexus listing for Party Limit Begone has separate files and variants, including a standalone version and a Script Extender version, with distinct multiplayer notes. Do not assume the names, files, or multiplayer behavior are interchangeable: choose the exact file that matches your setup and follow its current instructions. Party Limit Begone files on Nexus Mods.
9. 5e Spells
For players who want more spell options, PC Gamer describes 5e Spells as adding spells from Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition. That changes gameplay rather than just presentation, so check its current version, dependencies, and interactions with other spell or character mods before starting a long campaign.
10. UnlockLevelCurve
UnlockLevelCurve extends character progression; its Nexus listing describes levels 13–20 and includes support notes for 5e Spells and multiclassing. A higher level cap can alter balance and campaign progression, so it is a better fit for players intentionally seeking expanded progression than for those who want a mostly vanilla run. Confirm the current file and compatibility notes on the listing. Nexus Mods’ BG3 mod listings.
11. Compatibility Framework
This is another infrastructure pick, not a complete mod experience by itself. Nexus describes it as an API used by other mods, particularly subclass-related mods. Install it when a mod you want lists it as a requirement, and check that the dependent mod and framework versions are compatible.

12. Custom dice mods
Custom dice change the look of dice rolls without being presented as a new gameplay system. PC Gamer points to community-made options, making this a low-impact way to personalize a playthrough. Choose a currently maintained option from its listing and confirm whether it uses the official manager or a third-party installation route.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choose the right installation route
Larian introduced the official in-game Mod Manager and Toolkit with Patch 7. The official route is intended to improve compatibility and accessibility, and supported mods appear in the in-game manager. Larian says its official support applies to mods distributed through mod.io; modding outside that pipeline remains possible, and script-focused mods may still be made outside it. These routes are not equivalent in support or setup: use the in-game manager when the mod is available there, and follow third-party author instructions for external tools and files. - Game build: Look for an explicit note covering your current patch and hotfix, not just a general claim that the mod works with BG3. A mod page can lag behind a game update.
- Dependencies: Check whether the mod requires Script Extender, ImprovedUI, Compatibility Framework, or another library, and confirm that each dependency supports your build.
- Scope: Distinguish visual or interface adjustments from changes to spells, progression, movement, party size, or other gameplay systems.
- Distribution: Confirm whether it installs through the in-game manager or an external tool, and use the file and instructions that match that route.
- Multiplayer: Check the mod’s specific multiplayer instructions; players may need matching mods, versions, or load orders.
Compatibility is mod-specific, not guaranteed by a general list. For example, the Party Limit Begone files page identifies v3.5 files as supporting Patch 8 Hotfix 36/37 and distinguishes a standalone variant from one using Script Extender. That is evidence for those listed files and builds, not a guarantee for a later patch or every combination of mods.
Playing with mods in multiplayer
Larian’s guidance is direct: “If you’re playing multiplayer, both you and your party will need to have the same mods installed.” The exact file may add further conditions. Party Limit Begone’s page says everyone needs the Script Extender variant to avoid mismatch errors; its standalone variant usually only needs the host according to the listing, but the page adds that after Hotfix 36 it is better for everyone to install it. A separate multiplayer patch file is described as needing to be reapplied after a game update. Check the live file notes and coordinate the whole group before loading a shared campaign. What to do if a mod breaks
- Disable the suspected mods and check whether the issue persists, following Larian’s troubleshooting advice.
- If the issue disappears when mods are disabled, re-enable them selectively to identify the likely conflict or outdated file.
- Check the game build, mod file date, dependencies, and author notes; update the affected mod when a compatible update is available.
- If the problem appears mod-related, contact the mod author. Avoid continuing a valuable campaign with a broken setup until you understand the issue.
Larian warns that game updates and mod conflicts can cause crashes, save-loading failures, or interface problems, and recommends keeping mods updated. Mod Issues FAQ.
