CHANGE: A Homeless Survival Experience is a single-player PC game about trying to survive homelessness in a randomly generated city. Its roguelike systems make each run a different sequence of choices and setbacks, but the developers also acknowledge that the game abstracts parts of sleeping rough for play.
What is CHANGE: A Homeless Survival Experience?
Developed and published by Delve Interactive, CHANGE: A Homeless Survival Experience released on Steam on May 1, 2020. The game puts players in the role of someone who has recently become homeless and challenges them to find food, shelter and a route toward a new life in a changing city. Steam describes it as a single-player game with roguelike elements.
Exploration, items, perks, character development, events and decisions shape each attempt. The official listing describes hundreds of changing elements, while the game’s situations include interactions involving shelter, food, police, crime, poverty, abuse and addiction. The title’s question—“If you became homeless… what would you do?”—is a prompt for the game, not a claim that one playthrough can represent everyone’s experience.
How does its portrayal of homelessness work?
Solo developer Danny Hayes told Insider Gaming in a September 24, 2023 interview that his own experience of financial hardship and eviction helped inspire the game. He said he researched homelessness and spoke with people who had experienced sleeping rough. The Steam listing also says the developers researched the subject, while explicitly noting that some aspects are abstracted for gameplay.
#1 Best Overall
- Bring Your Bleach: It's a messy horror mystery case! Use your talents to investigate the crime scene and unsolved mysteries. No disrespect to Connor, but this party's definitely dead.
- No S***, Sherlock: Examine the realistic evidence, use your head, and untangle the web in the ultimate whodunit game within a game. Every detail matters here.
- Killing Time: This ain't your average game night. Besides, someone just got killed. If you like board games for adults, unsolved mysteries, content on serial killers, and party games, why not take a *stab* at this one?
- Scary Amounts Of Fun: This board game is rated 3/5 for difficulty and built for ages 14+. Play detective and enjoy 90-120 minutes of gameplay with one or more players.
- Murder Mysteries: Want more Hunt A Killer? Check out Killer Next Door or The Haunting At Wicker Ridge and other murder mysteries at huntakiller.com!
That context supports describing CHANGE as an effort at researched, empathetic representation—not as a complete or universal account of homelessness. Its systems turn difficult circumstances into game mechanics, so players should not treat the mechanics as a substitute for the varied realities and causes of homelessness.

Content notice
Steam’s mature-content description flags tobacco and alcohol use, drug use, infrequent swearing and text sections depicting abuse. These are worth considering for players choosing a game for themselves or someone else.
Developer-stated charity commitment
Delve Interactive’s Steam listing says 20% of the developer’s profits from the game will be donated to charities focused on homelessness. The same page reports that more than £7,000 had been raised for CRISIS, The Clocktower Sanctuary and Shelter, but gives no date for that total. Treat it as an undated figure reported on the listing, not a verified current total or an account of payments to each charity.

Is CHANGE worth considering?
CHANGE may interest players looking for a choice-driven, roguelike survival game that engages with homelessness rather than using a conventional fantasy or combat premise. Its real-world inspiration and stated research give context to that approach, while the developers’ own note about gameplay abstraction is an important boundary. Whether its subject matter and content are right for you depends on your comfort with the themes listed above; check the live store page for current edition, compatibility and price information.
