Those are two outlet-specific judgments, not a universal consensus. A fuller look at the year includes acclaimed releases and commercially prominent games across several platforms and genres.
What were the best games of 2003?
For a single lead pick, start with The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker on GameCube. GameSpot’s retrospective gives the game its 2003 Game of the Year award and records a 9.3 review score from Jeff Gerstmann, whose review was published November 21, 2003 (GameSpot’s 2003 Game of the Year retrospective). Metacritic’s retrospective independently names the GameCube game its 2003 winner, with a 96 Metascore (Metacritic’s best games of 2003).
These measures are not interchangeable: GameSpot’s 9.3 is one critic’s contemporary review score, while Metacritic’s 96 is an aggregate score shown on its retrospective page. Both support Wind Waker as a standout, but neither establishes an objective ranking of every game released that year.
Why Wind Waker stands out
Wind Waker’s recognition rests on more than its awards. Gerstmann’s review praised its visual presentation, controls, and story, while also noting that some players might find the later item-fetching, puzzles, and boss battles too easy. That mix of praise and caveat is useful context for readers deciding whether the game suits them.

Other notable games from 2003
A year-end shortlist should not treat one console or genre as the whole story. GameSpot’s 2003 awards covered PC, Xbox, GameCube, PlayStation 2, and Game Boy Advance, with categories for genres, platforms, special achievements, and an overall winner (GameSpot’s 2003 awards announcement). The games below offer different ways to think about the year’s standouts; their inclusion here does not imply that they all received the same kind of award or review recognition.

| Game | Original platform identified in the cited source | Why it belongs in the conversation |
|---|---|---|
| Madden NFL 2004 | PlayStation 2 | Metacritic names it runner-up in its 2003 retrospective. This is that outlet’s retrospective placement, not a universal second-place result. |
| Pokémon Ruby / Pokémon Sapphire | Not stated in the cited year overview | The year-in-games overview identifies the pair as the worldwide best-selling video game of 2003. Commercial prominence is a different measure from review quality or awards. |
| Mario Kart: Double Dash!! | Not stated in the cited year overview | Listed among the notable releases of the year, making it a relevant option for readers looking beyond a single-player adventure. |
| Final Fantasy X-2 | Not stated in the cited year overview | Also listed among the year’s releases, representing a different role-playing series and style of game from Wind Waker. |
The release and sales context comes from a secondary year-in-games overview, not an original publisher’s sales report (2003 in video games). It supports noting Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire’s commercial prominence, but not treating that fact as a quality ranking or quoting detailed sales totals as independently verified figures.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to choose a 2003 game to play
- For a critically recognized adventure: choose The Wind Waker, while keeping its GameCube platform and the review’s difficulty caveats in mind.
- For sports: Madden NFL 2004 is the named runner-up in Metacritic’s retrospective, specifically for PS2.
- For a commercially prominent release: Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire are identified as the year’s worldwide sales leader by the secondary overview; that says nothing by itself about whether they are your preferred style of game.
- For a broader shortlist: consider Mario Kart: Double Dash!! and Final Fantasy X-2 alongside the award-recognized titles, and verify the original platform and edition before buying or playing.
There is no single measure that combines awards, reviews, play style, and sales into one definitive answer. Naming the source and type of recognition makes a 2003 “best games” list more useful—and keeps popularity from being mistaken for critical judgment.
