Choose your next game by what you want to keep from Avowed: for more of its world, play Pillars of Eternity; for first-person fantasy exploration, try The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim; and for party-driven role-playing or tactical combat, look to Baldur’s Gate 3 or Divinity: Original Sin 2. If what you liked most was Obsidian’s authored quests and role-play, The Outer Worlds offers that in a science-fiction setting.
What makes a game feel like Avowed?
Avowed is a first-person fantasy action RPG developed by Obsidian Entertainment and published by Xbox Game Studios. It takes place in Eora, the setting introduced by the Pillars of Eternity franchise. Its official descriptions highlight magic, melee and ranged combat, companions, exploration, and decisions that affect the Living Lands and its people. Steam’s Avowed listing and Xbox’s launch announcement establish those core ingredients.
It is also worth distinguishing Avowed’s exploration from a seamless open world. Obsidian describes its world as large, sequentially unlocked defined zones, with freedom to explore within each. Its role-playing appeal includes choices that shape relationships, quests, settlements, and characters—not just combat outcomes. An Xbox Wire interview published January 24, 2025 explains that consequences vary in scale and timing. That makes setting, viewpoint, combat style, and role-play better guides to a follow-up than a claim that another game is simply “the same.”
Best games to play after Avowed, by what you want next
| If you want… | Try | Why it fits | What changes |
|---|---|---|---|
| More of Avowed’s world | Pillars of Eternity and its sequel | They share Eora, the world in which Avowed is set. | The connection is lore and setting, not identical viewpoint or combat. |
| Another Obsidian RPG centered on authored quests and role-play | The Outer Worlds | It is another Obsidian role-playing game and a natural choice if the studio’s quest and choice writing mattered more than fantasy. | It trades Eora’s fantasy for science fiction. |
| First-person fantasy exploration | The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim | It offers a magical world to explore from a first-person perspective. | Its open-world approach differs from Avowed’s defined zones, and the games do not share the same quest or narrative structure. |
| Party role-play and consequential decisions | Baldur’s Gate 3 | It emphasizes party role-play, difficult decisions, and detailed world-building; GameSpot’s RPG recommendation guide includes it among games for players drawn to those qualities. | It is party-based, with a different camera and combat emphasis from Avowed’s first-person action. |
| Tactical, party-centered combat | Divinity: Original Sin 2 | It is an adjacent option if you are open to tactical role-playing with a party. | It is not a first-person action game, so the appeal is a different style of RPG play. |
Choose by the part of Avowed you want to keep
For Eora lore: start with Pillars of Eternity
Pillars of Eternity is the clearest choice if you finished Avowed wanting to understand more about its world. The connection is unusually direct: Avowed is set in Eora, the fictional setting introduced in the Pillars of Eternity series. Go in for that shared setting, rather than expecting the same first-person action format.

For Obsidian’s role-playing in a new setting: try The Outer Worlds
If your favorite part was talking through quests, making decisions, and inhabiting a role, The Outer Worlds is a reasonable next stop from the same developer. It changes the atmosphere completely: this is science fiction, not a continuation of Avowed’s fantasy world.
For first-person fantasy wandering: try Skyrim
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is a strong fit when the priority is moving through a magical world from a first-person viewpoint. Its broader open-world design is a meaningful difference from Avowed’s sequence of defined zones, so choose it for exploration rather than for a matching quest structure.

For party decisions or tactical combat: choose Baldur’s Gate 3 or Divinity: Original Sin 2
Baldur’s Gate 3 suits players who want party relationships, difficult choices, and a richly detailed world. Divinity: Original Sin 2 is another option if tactical, party-led play is the main draw. Both shift away from Avowed’s first-person real-time action; their value here is the different kind of role-playing they offer.
How central are choices in Avowed?
Choices are a real part of Avowed’s identity, but they do not all have to transform the entire game to matter. In Xbox Wire’s January 24, 2025 interview, Obsidian’s Berto Ritger, identified as Region Director, said decisions can affect “the future of entire settlements, individual people, groups of people — the whole spectrum basically.” The same interview distinguishes consequences by their magnitude and by how soon they appear. That is why games with consequential decisions may appeal even when their combat and camera differ.

Are these games direct gameplay equivalents?
No. This is a preference-based guide, not a ranking of games that reproduce Avowed’s mechanics. Pillars of Eternity shares its world; The Outer Worlds shares the developer and role-playing focus; Skyrim is a first-person fantasy exploration alternative; and Baldur’s Gate 3 and Divinity: Original Sin 2 are party-centered RPGs with different combat and presentation. Pick the recommendation that matches the element you want more of, rather than expecting every part of Avowed to carry over.
