In State of Decay 2, the best backpack is the one that fits the survivor’s job: take more loot on a scavenging run, or travel lighter when mobility matters. Backpack inventory and resource rucksacks are separate systems, so choosing a pack is not the same as deciding which supplies to bring home.
What does a backpack do in State of Decay 2?
A backpack is an in-game survivor item that affects personal inventory. That inventory is where a survivor carries weapons, consumables, and scavenged items. Undead Labs’ support page identifies inventory management and scavenging as tutorial topics, and points players to the in-game How to Play section for refreshers: State of Decay 2 Support.
The available official guidance does not publish a current comparison of backpack slot counts or weight values. Community references describe differences in capacity and weight, but those specifications are secondary and should be checked against the item descriptions in your current game before treating them as exact: State of Decay Wiki: Backpacks and State of Decay 2 Wiki: About Survivors.
Backpack or rucksack: what’s the difference?
A backpack affects a survivor’s personal inventory. A rucksack is a separate container for a resource load, such as supplies brought back from a location. Official announcements describe storing gear, including rucksacks, through community inventory management, and depositing rucksacks at claimed Landmark Outposts: State of Decay 2 announcements. For combat or travel
Consider whether a lighter pack better suits a survivor who needs to move between encounters or locations. Community sources report capacity and weight distinctions, but official material cited here does not confirm precise tradeoffs. Check the pack description and your survivor’s inventory in the current build.
For a specialist role
Choose based on what that survivor routinely carries. A scavenger benefits from room for finds; a combat-focused survivor may prefer space for weapons and supplies. There is no established universal best pack in the official material available here, and the right choice depends on the task and the pack’s displayed stats.

How to manage survivor inventory and rucksacks
- Review the survivor’s inventory. Use the game’s community inventory management features to view or equip survivor items and transfer gear.
- Check what the pack actually changes. Compare the backpack’s displayed capacity and any weight information before swapping it in.
- Plan separately for a resource haul. If you are bringing back a rucksack, account for that resource container as a distinct part of the trip.
- Deposit the rucksack on return. Official announcements describe rucksack deposits at claimed Landmark Outposts; use the appropriate available deposit interaction.
What to know about version and exact stats
Undead Labs says State of Decay 2 received its final content update in October 2024 and directs players to in-game tutorials for help: State of Decay 2 Support. That does not establish exact backpack capacities or weights, nor does it guarantee that every community reference reflects the current game mode or build.
