This guide covers Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War—not the historical Cold War. Start by matching the problem to your platform and symptom: a console crash, a PC launch or file error, and a connection or lag issue need different checks. Try reversible steps first, then use the exact error code and current service status to decide whether to escalate.
Start with the symptom and platform
Use this quick guide to choose a first step. The detailed checks below explain what to try and when to stop.

| Crash or freeze on PlayStation or Xbox | Close and restart the game; check console updates and ventilation. | If crashes persist after the platform-specific checks, contact the relevant console support service. |
| Crash on PC | Check minimum requirements, ventilation, background apps, and graphics drivers. | If the crash persists, record the exact code, launcher, and what you were doing when it occurred. |
| PC will not launch or load properly | Repair or verify game files, close interfering programs, and let shader preloading finish. | Check the current guidance for your Windows version and launcher if these steps do not help. |
| Cannot connect or matchmaking takes unusually long | Check game and platform service status, sign-in, and your local network. | Contact the appropriate support service if the issue continues after basic checks; unusually long matchmaking may also involve an account review. |
| Lag, stuttering, or rubber-banding | Reduce other network traffic and, if possible, test a wired connection. | Persistent lag can involve the ISP route, distance to a game server, congestion, or packet loss—not just the console or PC. |
Activision’s support index for Black Ops Cold War groups help for crashes, known issues, PC troubleshooting, connectivity, and lag. Its articles have different publication dates, so use current service-status pages for live conditions and treat older troubleshooting details as dated where noted.
Fix crashes and freezes by platform
Activision’s crash guidance, dated March 5, 2024, recommends closing and restarting the game first; sometimes a full console reboot is also needed. The same article gives separate checks for each platform: Black Ops Cold War crash troubleshooting. Avoid jumping straight to deleting data or changing network settings before the low-risk checks.
#1 Best Overall
PlayStation
If the game crashes with CE-34878-0 or a generic application or system-software error, restart the game and console, then check for PlayStation system updates. Make sure the console has room for airflow and is not overheating. Activision also points to PlayStation guidance for clearing older files or game data; follow that platform guidance carefully rather than deleting data at random. If the crash continues after these checks, contact PlayStation Support: the problem may require console-level diagnosis.
Xbox
Activision reports that some Xbox crashes occur around the public Multiplayer lobby, before a match or just after one. Restart the game and console, install available console updates, and check ventilation. Clearing the console cache is another suggested step. Use the article’s network-settings instructions only if the issue is actually related to network settings; changing them is not a general crash fix. If the issue persists and the game disc is in good condition, contact Xbox Support.
PC
Check that the PC meets the game’s minimum requirements and has adequate ventilation. Update the graphics driver, close unnecessary background applications, and test again. Activision warns that overlays, input-remapping utilities, and recording tools can interfere with startup or play; if crashes persist, close or temporarily uninstall suspected conflicting tools and retest. Reintroduce them one at a time if you need to identify which one is involved.
When the PC game will not launch, install, or load
Activision’s PC troubleshooting article is dated November 12, 2020: PC troubleshooting for Black Ops Cold War. Its file-repair and conflict checks can still be useful, but its Windows 10 and DirectX compatibility details are historical, not a current universal requirement. Check current operating-system and launcher support for your own PC before relying on those older compatibility statements.
Repair or verify the installation
- Battle.net: use the launcher’s Scan and Repair option to check for damaged or missing files.
- Steam: close programs that could interfere, then use Steam’s option to verify the integrity of the game’s files.
Launcher labels and menus can change. If you cannot find an option, consult the current help for your launcher rather than trying unrelated system changes.
Let shader preloading complete
Allow shader preloading to finish before entering a mode. Activision’s PC guide says navigating away from the main menu interrupts preloading and can lead to performance problems. If loading or performance issues begin immediately after you interrupt it, return to the menu and allow it to complete before testing again.
Consider older reported quirks cautiously
The 2020 PC guide also discusses issues involving access to settings, mouse-wheel delay, and audio-device selection. These are historical reports, not confirmation that the same quirks remain present in every current game build. Check whether the symptom still matches current launcher and game behavior before changing settings to address one.
Use the exact crash code, but check its date
Write down the full error code, platform, launcher (on PC), and the point at which the crash occurred. Activision’s known-issues page was last updated July 7, 2023: known issues for Black Ops Cold War. It lists PC crashes associated with 887A0005, 0x0 (0xA2E8EF8F) N, and 0x0 (0x1AEC5F31) N as under investigation at that time. It lists 3107840166 and 2909663725 among resolved PC crashes.

Those labels describe the page’s July 2023 status, not whether a problem is active or fixed now. Check the current game support page before treating a listed code as a live issue. If your code is not listed, the code alone does not establish a cause; include it with your platform and launcher when contacting support.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Troubleshoot connection and matchmaking problems
For connection failures, check service availability before changing your router. Activision’s connection article, dated October 7, 2020, says a non-green game service status or an alert can cause connection trouble until service is restored: connecting to a Black Ops Cold War game. Check both the game’s status and the relevant PlayStation or Xbox service status.
- Confirm sign-in: make sure you are signed in to the platform account you use to play.
- Run the platform network test: if it reports an error, follow the platform’s guidance for that error before changing router settings.
- Restart the router: use its normal restart procedure and wait for the connection to return before testing the game.
- Pause competing traffic: temporarily stop large downloads and bandwidth-heavy streaming on your home network, then check whether connection quality changes.
- Check the network you are using: on a school, workplace, or shared network, ask its administrator about restrictions rather than trying to bypass them.
Activision says unusually long matchmaking or high-ping lobbies may indicate an account review. Its support article does not provide the review’s duration or process, so a network tweak cannot be promised as a remedy. Do not attempt to bypass enforcement; use the official support route if you need help with your account.
Only then consider router settings
Activision presents UPnP, port forwarding, and a console-only DMZ test as advanced, sequential checks. These settings are not first-line fixes: router changes can affect network exposure and require access to the router. Test after each change so you can identify its effect. If you try a temporary DMZ test on a console, undo it afterward; do not leave the console in the DMZ as a permanent workaround. The connection article does not establish that any of these steps will resolve every connection problem.

Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Reduce lag, stuttering, and rubber-banding
Activision’s lag article, also dated October 7, 2020, distinguishes several symptoms: rubber-banding is movement snapping back, stuttering is freezing or skipping movement, and hit-marker delay is when apparent hits do not match the opponent’s response. Lag can also contribute to lobby or match disconnects: lag and performance issues in Black Ops Cold War.
- Latency (ping) is the time data takes to travel between your game and the server. Activision says it depends substantially on ISP network quality and your location relative to the server.
- Packet loss means some data does not arrive. An unstable route or connection can therefore cause erratic movement or delayed responses even if other internet use seems normal.
- Bandwidth is how much data a connection can transfer over time. Household streaming and downloads can compete with game traffic and reduce what is available to play.
Activision strongly recommends using a wired Ethernet connection for more consistent connectivity. If Wi-Fi is contributing to instability, testing with an Ethernet cable can help distinguish a local wireless problem from a service or ISP issue. A cable is optional, not an endorsed brand or guaranteed cure: it cannot fix an outage, account review, poor ISP routing, or every source of lag. Reducing competing traffic and using router QoS, if available, are also troubleshooting options rather than guaranteed fixes.
When to contact support
Escalate with the information that helps distinguish a game problem from a platform or network problem. For a crash, include the exact code, platform, and the point at which it occurs; on PC, include the launcher. For a connection issue, note the service-status result and any error from the platform network test. Use Activision’s game support options for game-specific help. Persistent console crashes after the platform checks belong with PlayStation or Xbox Support, as directed by Activision’s crash guidance.
