There are two endings, and the deciding choice comes immediately before the final battle: fight as Maelle or Verso. The routes offer opposing answers to whether the Canvas should be preserved or destroyed—and each comes at a significant cost.
How many endings are there, and what determines them?
Available guides document two endings. Immediately before the final battle, choose whether to fight as Maelle or Verso; that decision sets the route. Earlier dialogue choices do not determine which ending you see. The guides do not document a secret third ending unlocked by moral choices, relationships, optional bosses, or collectibles, though that is a report of the currently documented routes rather than a guarantee about every future update. Push Square’s choice guide and Fullclear’s ending guide describe the route split.

What happens in the Verso ending?
In the Verso route, Verso defeats Maelle and destroys the Canvas. Alicia returns to the real world, while the painted expeditioners and the world they inhabit are erased. The route presents the Dessendre family as finally facing grief outside the painting, but that release is purchased through the destruction of a community whose members are portrayed as living beings.
What happens in the Maelle ending?
In the Maelle route, Maelle defeats Verso and remains in the Canvas, restoring Lumière and the people lost to the Gommage. Alicia does not return to the real world. The painted Verso is returned to life in the Canvas despite having said he did not want that life. The reunion and revival therefore come with a loss of agency: preserving this world can also mean keeping others inside it against their wishes.

How do the endings compare?
| Question | Verso route | Maelle route |
|---|---|---|
| Who wins the final fight? | Verso defeats Maelle. | Maelle defeats Verso. |
| What happens to the Canvas? | It is destroyed. | It is preserved and repainted. |
| What happens to Alicia? | She returns to reality. | She remains in the Canvas. |
| What happens to the painted expeditioners? | They are erased with the Canvas. | They are restored. |
| What does the route prioritize? | Acceptance and letting go. | Preservation and continued life in the Canvas. |
| What is its central cost? | The painted inhabitants lose their lives. | Alicia and Verso’s agency is sacrificed to life continuing in the Canvas. |
This comparison follows route details reported by Fullclear; it is a way to understand the tradeoffs, not a claim that the developers have assigned one ending a definitive moral label.
Are the endings meant to be judged as good and bad?
It is more useful to see the endings as a pair of conflicting priorities than to label one simply “good” and the other “bad.” In a GamesRadar report of its GDC 2026 interview, lead writer Jennifer Svedberg-Yen said the endings “are meant to be understood together” and “need to be understood and experienced in tandem with each other.” She described them as “a contrast” and “two sides of the same coin – the recto verso, if you will.”

Svedberg-Yen also framed the underlying question as: “whose happiness do we prioritize? And when we pursue happiness for somebody, what is the cost, and do we fully consider the cost to the other folks, the other characters?” The Verso route accepts the loss of the painted community; the Maelle route preserves that community while overriding the wishes of Alicia and Verso. The writer’s comments support treating the endings as complementary perspectives, not as an official declaration that one is canon or universally correct. GamesRadar’s interview report attributes these comments to Svedberg-Yen.
Can you see both endings without replaying the whole game?
Yes. Keep a save from just before the final choice, finish one route, then return to the main menu and reload that save to choose the other character. This lets you view both outcomes without restarting the campaign, according to Fullclear and Push Square.
